ESA gets behind SOPA

Game industry representative body announces support of controversial online piracy bill, pursuing "right balance" to combat content theft.

Introduced in October, the Stop Online Piracy Act has proven to be a polarizing piece of legislation. And while some of the major players within the game industry have been silent as to their stance on the bill, the Entertainment Software Association believes its passage is in those companies' best interest.

The ESA believes there may be something to SOPA.
The ESA believes there may be something to SOPA.

In a statement today, the ESA announced its support for SOPA, saying that the game industry requires effective protection against the illegal acquisition of games and those who facilitate it.

As an industry of innovators and creators, we understand the importance of both technological innovation and content protection, and do not believe the two are mutually exclusive. Rogue websites--those singularly devoted to profiting from their blatant illegal piracy--restrict demand for legitimate video game products and services, thereby costing jobs. Our industry needs effective remedies to address this specific problem, and we support the House and Senate proposals to achieve this objective.

We are mindful of concerns raised about a negative impact on innovation. We look forward to working with the House and Senate, and all interested parties, to find the right balance and define useful remedies to combat willful wrongdoers that do not impede lawful product and business model innovation.

As it was first proposed, SOPA would allow the US government and copyright holders to request court orders against websites that are believed to be hosting infringing content. Those who do not comply with the order risk having payment services and advertising channels severed, as well as being removed from search engine results and blacklisted by Internet service providers.

Companies that support the bill--including the Motion Picture Association of America and National Football League--argue that it offers necessary protection to content creators. Opponents of the bill, such as Google, Facebook, Twitter, and the Electronic Frontier Foundation, argue that SOPA infringes upon First Amendment rights and will ultimately deprive the Internet of non-infringing content.

SOPA is also supported by a number of major media corporations, including GameSpot parent company CBS. For more information, check out GameSpot's analysis of the bill.

If there's a group you should support, it's the Electronic Frontier Foundation.

If somehow, this passes, if somehow, Obama signs it in, there will be so much outrage, I can't even. Imagine all of the hacker groups, the DOS attack groups, etc, who would go into 150% overdrive mode if this passed. I dare you to pass this bill.

well they just signed that one bill that means they can hold us in prison just for thinking we are a terrorist with no evidence and for however long they want this does not seem so far fetched that it will pass.

Even if by some miracle this passes, I would be astonished if Obama didn't veto it without a second thought.

I hate SOPA mostly for the fact that it can ruin Let's Plays and other fan-based content, especially on YouTube, but surely corporations can understand that passing SOPA really won't hurt piracy that much?

I love how Nintendo, Sony, and EA pull their support...and the ESA jumps in. Seriously? Anyone who's for SOPA either doesn't understand it--or intentionally spits on the grave of our founding fathers. SOPA is nothing but a mask for internet censorship, a promise of security at the cost of liberty, and a fallacy that would have been laughed out of congress 12 years ago while its writers were tried for treason. I can't believe this is even an issue. Kill SOPA now!

The thing that pisses me off is that it's all because they're trying fight the simplicity of being able to copy and distribute something with newer digital technology.

Of course gaming companies support SOPA, they don't want their stuff being stolen anymore. They don't care if it means the destruction of the internet

If the kind folk at gamespot and it's sister sites would have a chat with the higher ups at CBS and tell them that they're morons that would be awfully great of you guys. Although perhaps be slightly more diplomatic than this commenter :).

This will affect the internet as a whole which will affect the world not just the USA. How they can think they have the right to pass this is unbelievable, anyone outside of America can't have a say so how can they tell if this is in the peoples interest? This bill could destroy the internet as we know it, as its made up of copyright infringement this site for instance could cease to exist, everything that we take for granted as an internet community will be destroyed. The internet will just be turned into another platform for misrepresented news.

No wonder there was no mention of SOPA&PIPA on most game review sites. You guys are owned by the same money grabbing moronic media companies that support the bill in the first place. And to the rest of you; open your eyes and think. This bill has little to do with piracy as it will have no effect on it but it will limit your rights and control the (legal!) content you get from the internet. Edit: Even news sites and sites like Gamespot (even if owned by the supporters of the bill) could potentially die out as most of the content they display is copyrighted but they can do so under the fair use bill. All the screenshots, videos etc... potentially infringe copyright under SOPA/PIPA

Yes, let us use draconian and impractical laws in order to stop people who probably would never have bought our products in the first place, while we're at it we will empower ourselves to block anything at all on the pretense of copyright infringement, that could in ABSOLUTELY NO WAY WHATSOEVER WE PROMISE be used to silence opinions we didn't like, especially regarding our products.

@RealFabioSooner i can't say i never pirated stuff but that's not the reason i'm against SOPA the reason i'm against that is i'm sure they won't stop at only pirated stuff... If SOPA is accepted do you know america will be able to close any sites they want even if the sites is not based in america ? If SOPA is really only for sites with pirated stuff i don't have any problem with that but i really doubt they will stop with that only...

"Polarizing"? Polarizing means that there's an almost equal divide on any one issue. The vast majority of human beings are SOPA. On top of that, one need look no further than the fiasco with Naughty Dog's "The Last of Us" and Viacom taking ND's trailer for it down just because it aired on their crappy awards show first and felt they owned the trailer because of it, to see how SOPA would be abused even further. Don't let this bill or Protect IP pass without a fight.

Let's be realistic. This probably will have little to no effect on piracy, as there are many, many counter measures that pirates can take. All this will do is make the internet a really crappy place for legitimate users.

Games will keep being made without SOPA or PIPA. Anybody who thinks otherwise clearly doesn't know what they're talking about.

Hmmm. So, who should I believe in when it comes to what SOPA really is about? Thousands of random angry Internet entities who most probably have pirated lots of stuff, or the professionals who back that bill up?... Considering that I want games to keep being made, it's an easy choice.

If this bill is passed they will not see a dime from me, I will not buy another video game, I will put my money towards a hobby like scuba diving. SOPA will just hurt people and make our beloved internet into a chaotic network. Oh and if Gamespot thinks that it's cool, just wait til they accidently use someone else's video or link something that someone owns without permission. I'm sure they haven't read the entire bill. I've read about 80% of it and it will define what it means to be miserable.
