Epic Games Promotes PUBG Mobile In Jab At Apple Over Fortnite Ban

Tim Sweeney made sure his followers knew that PUBG Mobile is developed with Epic Games' own Unreal Engine.

Epic Games' ongoing legal battle with Apple over Fortnite's removal from the App Store may stretch on for the foreseeable future, and CEO Tim Sweeney is having some fun with it while the process plays out. The developer took an unusual tact recently, promoting PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds--a rival battle royale game--to demonstrate the value of Unreal Engine for Apple users. It looks like this battle is going to get a lot weirder before it's over. That is, if it ever does end.

On August 28, Apple promoted a massive new update for PUBG Mobile on iOS, one of the biggest battle royale competitors to Fortnite (which just received its Season 4 update on platforms other than iOS). PUBG Mobile has been a huge success, and has earned over $3 billion from microtransactions.

While Epic Games might normally see PUBG Mobile as its competition, the game does make use of Epic's Unreal Engine--which Apple attempted to cut off updates to on iOS and Mac--so Sweeney decided to promote the game, as well.

Now Playing: Fortnite Drama Heats Up: Epic To Lose Apple Dev Accounts | Save State

The passive-aggressive nature of the tweet certainly isn't lost on us, because if Apple does eventually cease Unreal Engine support on its devices, that would likely impact PUBG Mobile. Unreal is one of the most popular engines in the world, with support on nearly every device including mobile, PC, and consoles. It's not only used for its own games, but has been modified over the years by other studios to fit their projects. Unreal Engine 5 will be supported on next-generation systems.

Epic Games' shots at Apple have continued with its Free Fortnite campaign and tournament. It also gave away assets so players can make their own Free Fortnite merchandise, even giving permission for them to sell it. As the logo parodies one of Apple's earlier designs, it seems Epic is trying to win in the court of public opinion if it can't actually win its lawsuit.

And despite not being as successful as Fortnite, PUBG Mobile has managed to carve out a healthy niche. Its 1.0 update will include major improvements across the board, and a new competition is going to award $2 million in prizes. Unlike Fortnite, it doesn't offer cross-play with PC or console players and is technically a separate game. If you haven't already played it, PUBG is now a free PlayStation Plus game for those with a PS4. Plus members can claim it now and keep it for as long as their subscription is active.

Funny how they went from being accused stealing PUBG intellectual property (so much so that PUBG used Epic games because they thought that by using the Unreal engine, Fortnite was created from the basic PUBG game code) to now promoting it to fight Google Play and the Apple App Store. Glad to see that the lawsuit must‘ve been settled amicably.

this is joke, epic started this and causing issue for customer, and now they want customer to help them with something they started.

Apple is no better, they are play the same game Epic is playing with Apple. I am sure in terms of agreement in the clause for epic to release there games on iOS there any transaction must go threw apple payment, and if they try to bypass it would get pulled. which Epic knew which why when it got pulled in less then 24 they were already sueing, they knew exactly what was gone happen. and did it anyway then have the never to say APPLE is gona cause harm to there EPIC brand.

Epic is the one that did this to them selves

@tsunami2311: Your logic is so backwards. If that is your thought process on display there are remedial classes you can take for general education.

What part of "Epic approached Apple with a 60 page lawsuit" dont you understand?

This is not about YOU. This is not about the CUSTOMER. You spoiled entitled whiny child. This is about DEVELOPERS and freedom to create something better, something more akin to what we used to get. Polished games.

Tim Sweeney is who you get if you gave Randy Pitchford like two lessons on public relations and put him through an industrial degreasing bath a couple times.

Tim needs to be reminded by Apple what the word "infringement" means.

Only then he would be able to fully understand that a company's policy is meant to be followed when their services are being used.

@nintendians: Apple tried. They now have a restraining order to keep UE games around.

@basketballfan: because if apple have it that way, every company that uses unreal engine would be pissed and their not part of epic games but just uses it's engine tools.

@nintendians: It would also destroy Epics business from a completely unrelated matter. This is why Apple are clowns and children, and it demonstrates why they are a monopoly.

Apple's knee-gut reaction to Epic removing a game (yes, Epic removed it by intentionally violating ToS), was to decimate every other little developer who makes a UE game on IOS.

It unbelievable that people even "think" they are supporting Apple in this. Apple sure AF does not care about you.

@basketballfan: pretty much.

epic didn't removed any game, all epic done was to make when it's player buy items or vbucks, they either choose to buy it from the app. store (apple) or play less (directly) to epic via fornite, which apple and google said it void their tos, but apple took it a bit farther to ban the unreal engine tool, in which effect other companies that's not epic games.

pretty much.

@nintendians: Also keep in mind the Apple allows Netflix to do exactly what Epic wants to do.
