Elon Musk Still Recommends Overwatch, Says Story Is "Neglected" in Many Games

The Tesla and SpaceX founder weighs in with his thoughts on gaming.

Deus Ex: Mankind Divided

We already know that billionaire inventor Elon Musk loves Blizzard's hero shooter Overwatch. But what other games is he into? Musk sat down with Y Combiner's Sam Altman recently to discuss the subject.

Musk started off by name-dropping Overwatch again, adding that "generally Blizzard does great stuff." This led to his next reccomendation, the free-to-play card game Hearthstone, which he said his kids play a lot. Musk also said he enjoyed the original Deus Ex, but lamented that the newest game, Mankind Divided, didn't have such a great story.

"I think [story] is really neglected [in modern games]," Musk said. "That's the criticism of the latest Deus Ex; the storytelling is kind of lame. Some of the oldest games, the graphics and sound were terrible, so they had to rely on storytelling."

Last year, when Musk talked about his love of Overwatch, the inventor also said human existence is actually a simulation being controlled by some being of higher intelligence.

"The strongest argument for us being in a simulation is the following: 40 years ago, we had Pong. Two rectangles and a dot. Now, 40 years later, we have photorealistic 3D with millions playing simultaneously. If you assume any rate of improvement at all, then the games will become indistinguishable from reality, even if that rate of advancement drops by 1000 from what it is now."

tried it, not a fan of games i cant get immersed into, lack of story is pretty much a no-go for me.

I applaud his taste but... why are people asking Elon Musk about videogames?

    Avatar image for xdude85

Games are all about the characters and settings. Some stories are ok, but let's face it, whenever someone transforms a game into an actual narrative (movie) the results are usually ugly.

What story does Overhype have???? right none in the game, everything is outside the game......ugh

FFS Destiny at launch did more story than Overhype......and that's not a bold statement, they had some story not that it made a lot of sense but it was there.....in game but like Overhype they put a lot of stuff outside the game......

a real game with good story is KOTOR, it's a RPG and one of the best RPG's ever, story has a twist I didn't see coming the first time through and the places the game went was cool.....

Mass Effect was a god story, routine mission ends up being a race against time to stop a madman from doing some bad stuff.....combat kinda suffered but the story was top end......even at it's worst in the sequels it had way more in game story than Overhype.....

Chess doesn't tell a story. Even though...

It's only normal stories in games are overlooked. Did you see the amount that pop a year!? Of course stories comes second to graphics (or gameplay, but it's rare).

The amount of game with good stories didn't really decrease over the years. It's the amount of games with questionable stories that increased dramatically.

    "Games are missing story."

    -Recommends Overwatch.

    Contradict, much?

    Avatar image for l_willard

@Servare: Overwatch doesnt try to convey a story, though. He criticizes Mankind Divided because that game is narrative driven and is poor in comparison to like-minded games of yore.

    Avatar image for ichirei

@Servare: Really? Someone can't love story in videogames and at the same time enjoy a shooter enough to recommend it?

    Avatar image for Abomination713

@ichirei: That's the problem. There is no story in Overwatch. You have to get the story outside the game and that's a sign of a bad game when you have to do that. It's like watching a movie, but in order to get the full experience, you have to read books before you watch the movie or all the movie turns out to be is nothing but explosions and fighting and you have no idea why. Destiny pulled this same crap.

    @Abomination713: Transformers, anyone?

@Abomination713: That's a very compelling argument you make. Great example with the movies as well.

    I know, right?

Before I clicked on the article I thought it would be about him saying that story is neglected in games now a days and that it doesn't really matter. I think this was predominantly thanks in part to Overwatch being included in the article heading.

    @videogameninja: Heck yeah!

As much as I don't want to admit that he and I share similar views on anything, there is one thing he is unfortunately correct in saying. Story as of late is being neglected in games. He is right in saying that back when graphics were crude they had to rely heavily on story to weave an intricate web of immersion in a world.

It's easy for developers now a days to overlook this crucial component when crafting a game because "well y'know, we gotta make that cliff in the background look super ultra realistic" or "we have to focus on making every fiber of that marines clothing look like real fabric."

I'm not saying story should be developers primary focus when making a game, just that it shouldn't be an afterthought.

But then again, this guy believes he lives in the Matrix so....

Looking forward to stacking up two power bricks and his new solar roof tiles this year... But definitely NOT giving it any IP connectivity.

Deus Ex : Mankind Divided was perfectly fine.

    Avatar image for ichirei

@isariamkia: The gameplay and level design was perfectly fine, but I found the story to be much weaker and uninteresting than in the previous chapters, and that's what Elon criticized.

    Avatar image for isariamkia

@ichirei: I only played Human Revolution and Mankind Divided and I don't think it was weaker than Human Revolution but maybe that's because games don't need much to impress me >>
