Elliot Page's character from the Netflix series The Umbrella Academy is coming out as transgender for Season 3, and will receive a new name to accompany the change, as shared by the actor on his social media accounts today.

"Meet Viktor Hargreeves," reads the post on Twitter. Netflix retweeted it, adding "Welcome to the family, Viktor, we're so happy you're here." Moving forward, the character that appeared as Vanya throughout Seasons 1 and 2 will be henceforth known as Viktor Hargreeves. Viktor will come out as transgender during the season, so this won't be handled through time travel or multiversal chicanery, but rather as a part of the character's arc.

Page came out as transgender in December 2020. With Umbrella Academy being an ongoing show for Netflix, how the show would handle this has been a question until this confirmation. Netflix confirmed just after Elliot's announcement that he would continue to star in the show, and updated the credits for the show, but at the time said there were no plans to change the character's gender.

Aside from these details about Page's character's journey, Netflix has been careful to keep other plot information under wraps. Umbrella Academy Season 3 debuts on June 22, 2022.
