Ellen Page Alleges X-Men: The Last Stand Director Brett Ratner "Outed" Her On Set

Page recalls comments Ratner made about other women on the set of the X-Men film.

Flatliners star Ellen Page has accused her one-time director Brett Ratner of publicly outing her to the cast of X-Men: The Last Stand, with no regard for the actress herself. Page's claim comes in a lengthy Facebook post that details several instances of alleged misconduct by the director, following multiple accusations of sexual assault and harassment.

In her post, Page writes, "I was eighteen years old. He looked at a woman standing next to me, ten years my senior, pointed to me and said: 'You should f*** her to make her realize she's gay.'" At this point in Page's life, she says she "had not yet come out to myself." Thus, having Ratner out her to the assembled cast and crew of the third X-Men movie at a meet-and-greet event before production commenced was violating.

No Caption Provided

This story, in particular, has been corroborated by Page's The Last Stand co-star Anna Paquin, who tweeted, "I was there when that comment was made. I stand with you."

"This man, who had cast me in the film, started our months of filming at a work event with this horrific, unchallenged plea," she says. "He 'outed' me with no regard for my well-being, an act we all recognize as homophobic." Unfortunately for the cast and crew of the film, Page says this wasn't the only incident of misconduct from Ratner during filming. "I proceeded to watch him on set say degrading things to women. I remember a woman walking by the monitor as he made a comment about her 'flappy p****,'" she says.

There was eventually an altercation between the two, as well. "He was pressuring me, in front of many people, to don a t-shirt with 'Team Ratner' on it. I said no and he insisted," Page remembers. "I responded, 'I am not on your team.' Later in the day, producers of the film came to my trailer to say that I 'couldn't talk like that to him.' I was being reprimanded, yet he was not being punished nor fired for the blatantly homophobic and abusive behavior we all witnessed."

The actress also discusses another instance in which a man in a position of power took advantage of the situation. "When I was sixteen a director took me to dinner (a professional obligation and a very common one). He fondled my leg under the table and said, 'You have to make the move, I can't,'" Page says. "I did not make the move and I was fortunate to get away from that situation." She says that mere months after that, she was assaulted by a film crew member and asked by a director to sleep with a man in his late twenties. It should be reiterated this all happened when Page was 16.

She is the latest in a long line of actors and actresses coming forward about the sexual assault and harassment they've faced throughout their lives. Recently, Star Trek: Discovery star Anthony Rapp alleged that fellow actor Kevin Spacey assaulted him when he was 14--Spacey was 26, at the time.

Rapp's charges led to Netflix cancelling House of Cards, which Spacey stars in. Additionally, director Ridley Scott announced he was cutting Spacey out of his upcoming film All the Money in the World, just six weeks before release. Christopher Plummer has been hired to reshoot all of Spacey's scenes as J. Paul Getty. According to Scott, he's still planning to make the December 22 release.

@James_xeno: Bless your heart. Allow me to attempt an explanation that you can understand. For most gay people, coming to terms with our sexuality is a painful, difficult process. We have years of societal expectations thrown at us by our families, classmates and religion, to name a few influences. We're terrified of disappointing and angering our parents. If we were unfortunate enough to grow up in a religious household, we're terrified of being damned to Hell and such. There's also the threat of being beaten or killed for something we cannot control. We can't do anything to change our orientation. Therefore, many of us spend years in denial; not just to those around us but also to ourselves. We don't WANT to be gay, and many people go so far as to get married before we can finally admit what we are.

@derekscorp: We don’t need an explanation for your decision. It’s your choice to live how you like just as others may never be able to wrap their heads around it. The two freedoms are actually pretty much the same as long as one doesn’t cross the line and try to force their lifestyle choices upon the other.

We’ve got one chance at life. Just enjoy it how you like and can but realize we all deal with detractors for one reason or another due to race, gender, looks, politics, etc etc etc.

@James_xeno: I'm sorry your reading comprehension is lacking. It means that Page wasn't sure, or willing to admit that she was gay, even to herself at that time.

@kami_amaya: You cant "out" someone that you dont know is gay, especially when they dont even know they are gay. He made a rude comment and by coincidence she happened to be gay. That is all.

@ps3gamer1234: Probably why the douche nozzle of a director made the comment. Later, she just happened to realize she was gay.

Well, im glad Paige has a backbone to standup for herself. Others need to do the same.

What i don't agree with is the sexual assualt. Therefore, if someone calls you by a name you don't agree with, it's an assault? The Director's in question were a**holes but they didn't force themselves on her.

@mach22: the Ratner part was sexual harassment. The hand under the table feelin in her leg when she was a minor was what she was calling sexual assault, but it’s more like pedophelia. Let’s stop arguing semantics and just all collectively say that a Hollywood is filled with tons of perverts and they should ALWAYS be outed when things like this happen. In no universe is any of this shit acceptable.

@mach22: Total BS! A verbal attack does not constitute assault. Grow a backbone and realize we all suffer from stereotypes and idiots for one reason or another. Gays are not the only victims of words and slander. There are so many useless words thrown at people which is why it’s important to just tune out the detractors. They’re aren’t important enough to truly impact your life if you simply live how you want to regardless of what some idiot wants to throw your way.

@mach22: Yeah this shit goes on everywhere. At various work environments, at bars.. clubs.. I mean cmon this is such a non story. And honestly our society has lots of double standards.. how many women get discriminated against if they are lesbians? I have never heard 1 rude remark ever said about women on women. Unless they were very unattractive but that has nothing to do with there sexuality.

@mach22: I didn't read anything here which had her claim he sexually assaulted her. She was specifically calling him out on his sexism and misogyny.

There's quite a few uses of the word "assault" without specifying if it was sexual. You could say it's implied that it has sexual connotations, considering the rest of the article, but I'm not so sure. I mean, for example...

"She says that mere months after that, she was assaulted by a film crew member... "

... tells me that she got beat up, not if she was straight up raped or merely fondled or something. I get it dude, specifying that it was sexual assault all the time in this article might make it tired while reading, I see why you wouldn't. But I think you should.

Also, this has absolutely nothing to do with VIDEO GAMES. This AT BEST has something to do with "nerd culture" because someone is in an X-Men film or something.

WHERE'S THE VIDYA JAMES NEWS?!

@KaptenHaddock: Assault doesn't have to be brutal. It can be as small as grabbing someone roughly by the arm.

@Germaximus:

Sure, you're not wrong - but while making my point, the most clear cut interpretation was the most straight-forward way to make that point.

That said, I did not consider milder variants of assault, I admit that. I still think I made the most efficient interpretation though. If anything, it's another dimension on the point of ambiguity.

Typical Hollywood. The rich and famous think they can get away with anything as long as they promise people they will make them rich and famous as well.

@bdrtfm You know, I think it might be worst in the US because you basically pander to the stars and treat them like royalty like nowhere else in the world. It's no wonder people who feel they're above everyone else and are allowed to go unchecked thanks to that status just slide into doing whatever the hell they feel like.
