Actor Elijah Wood has spoken more about the day his Lord of the Rings co-star Sean Astin sustained a nasty foot injury in the process of filming the epic fantasy series many years ago. This has been covered before in the bonus features, but Wood shared a little more insight as to what happened that day and how he reacted.

Astin hurt his foot filming a pivotal scene at the end of Fellowship of the Ring. Frodo is leaving the Fellowship to embark on his own personal quest to destroy the One Ring, but Sam finds him first and leaps into the water to go after him, even though he cannot swim. As it happens, the original scene had Sam saving Frodo, but director Peter Jackson flipped this around.

When Astin jumped into the water, he stepped on a branch in the water that punctured the bottom of his foot and "left a massive gash," Wood told Esquire (via ScreenRant).

"He pulled the branch out and there was this slit in his foot and a blob of coagulated blood came out," he added. "It was so big and I was so fascinated with it that I grabbed a stick and he was being tended to and I was like, 'Man, this is f**king crazy.' And he's like, meanwhile, being seen by a doctor and here I am fascinated by the blood, knowing that he was absolutely fine."

The moment this happened was captured on film and shared in the bonus features of Fellowship of the Ring, which you can see above. Astin said he had a premonition before filming the scene that he would hurt himself, but not by a pointy stick. Astin is also very calm and collected as the medical staff tends to his wound.

Astin's injury was one of multiple accidents that happened in the process of filming the epic trilogy. Many fans will surely remember how Viggo Mortensen broke his toe kicking an orc helmet, while Orlando Bloom broke ribs falling off a horse.

Fellowship of the Ring celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2021. Looking ahead, Amazon's Lord of the Rings TV series is scheduled to premiere on September 2 this year, while a new Lord of the Rings animated film is also in the works.
