Electronic Arts has announced plans to acquire Vancouver-based Black Box Games, a development house known mostly for its sports games. Black Box has been responsible for games like Midway's NHL Hitz 2002 and Sega's Soccer Slam and NHL 2K games.

On the subject of Black Box, Paul Lee, EA's senior vice president and COO, said, "Black Box Games is a studio full of highly talented and creative people. They have an impressive track record for developing multiple titles across several platforms. This acquisition brings us a powerhouse team to work on future titles for the Sony PlayStation 2 console, the Nintendo GameCube, and the Xbox system from Microsoft."

The company is currently working on EA's upcoming driving game, Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit 2.
