Bethesda on Wednesday announced that The Elder Scrolls Online's first DLC expansion, Imperial City, will launch on August 31 for PC/Mac and on September 15 for Xbox One and a day later on PlayStation 4.

Imperial City introduces "hours" of new gameplay to the fantasy MMO, spanning new areas, quests, enemies, and items. In terms of story, the Imperial City has been overrun by Daedric Prince Molag Bal, and players must fight the new Daedric forces and also each other.

The expansion is included with an ESO Plus Membership or can be purchased separately for $20. For a closer look at some of the new content coming to The Elder Scrolls Online, check out the video below.

Below is a rundown of Imperial City's "key features," as written by Bethesda.

  • All content is available to players that are level 10 and up
  • A brand new PvP/PvE space, including the six Imperial City Districts
  • New quests and key characters within the Imperial City
  • One new Imperial City PvP Public Dungeon: The Imperial Sewers
  • Two new PvE Imperial City group dungeons with Normal and Veteran versions: White-Gold Tower and Imperial City Prison
  • The Tel Var Stone system
  • 23 completely new Veteran Rank 16 item sets, only available in Imperial City
  • Treasure Vaults that contain new Veteran Rank 16 set jewelry and a chance for even rarer finds
  • Xivkyn racial motif style
  • New collectibles only available in Imperial City (pets, polymorphs, and a costume)

Accompanying Imperial City's release next month will be a base-game patch for everyone. In all, there will be "hundreds of fixes and improvements" for areas such as combat, classes, quests, dungeons, and more. Some of the key takeaways are below.

  • 15% decrease in the amount of XP it takes to gain a Veteran Rank
  • 100% more XP for all public dungeons
  • 50% more XP for all Veteran Rank quests
  • 20% more XP in Craglorn
  • Veteran Rank increased to 16
  • Racial Passive improvements
  • Mundus Stone buff improvements
  • Glass racial motif style
  • Improvements to existing item sets
  • The ability to hide mount visual upgrades
  • New crafting skill line passives
  • New Undaunted pledges
  • Tons of combat and gameplay balance changes
  • Improved end-of-campaign Alliance War rewards

The Elder Scrolls Online was originally released for PC in April 2014 as a subscription-based MMORPG. In January 2015, the game transitioned to a pay-once model and was renamed Tamriel Unlimited. The console versions launched in June 2015.

Just a couple weeks after The Elder Scrolls Online's console release, the game's creative director, Paul Sage, quit to join Borderlands developer Gearbox Software.

@Chaos_Dante_456 Don't know what game your playing in ESO it costs to go from Wayshrines, finding a Wayshrines just adds it to your map, it doesn't give you a free ride. And as some one says the quicker you re-use Wayshrines the more you'll pay to travel.

@endscrypt: I was the guy who said it did cost to use wayshrines and that the travel cost is higher after you use it. But the other guy is right I tried traveling straight from a way-shrine it doesn't cost .

@Chaos_Dante_456: bro my bad, I'm really sorry that's what I get for thinking I'm a smart ass, lol Anyways been playing the game all day and it costs to travel from wayshrines I don't understand how your traveling for free but I did notice when I travel to a friend it's free, I must be missing something. And for the record how stupid is it that you can't fast travel back to your guild m8s in Cyrodil, or am I again missing something.

i've never played this game, but its an ugly looking game.

Animations look weird... sorta like they are from an old game like morrowind with graphical mods put on top of them.

@crepingdeath: The game is 'buy to play' and its one of the biggest games that's presently out. Hence there's tons of content without any DLC...

I played in the pc beta and really hated this game but the Xbox One version is a lot better than it was back then. After a rocky launch with overcrowded queues it's improved a lot.

Still has a few minor bugs and has some much needed ui upgrades, (really needs buff/debuff display and floating combat text) but for a console mmo I'm actually pretty impressed. It's got better pvp lakes than GW2 imho. I just finished the pve campaign and started the veteran game this weekend.

This expansion seems kinda nice actually.

@nimqua420: The bonuses that the Sub gives you are not significant, so I would not Subscribe yet, if I were you unless you really want those Crowns to purchase costumes and DLC.

Fast Travel is there - you can teleport to any Wayshrine you have discovered from anywhere in the world except Cyrodiil for a fee. Or you can use any Wayshrine to teleport to other Wayshrines for free. Finally you can "Teleport to Friend/Guildmember" which gets you to the closest Wayshrine to them and is also free and can be done from anywhere in the world except Cyrodiil.

@nimqua420: Well there is fast travel but you can only fast travel to wayshrines and it costs gold that goes up incrementally based on your level and how recently you warped.

@Chaos_Dante_456: However, if you are at a wayshrine, you can fast travel to any other wayshrine that you have discovered for free. This is always the case.

I wish I didn't impulse buy this game. I just don't have enough time to play it, plus people seem to be pretty ho hum about it. I'll give it another go at some point... but then I'll be so behind in dlc. I wish I didn't impulse buy this game.

@GabrielX-X: This is an MMO which usually come with a Subscription. This one is B2P and it has lots of content for the $60 price tag. It's also incomparable in size to Witcher 3 - ESO is significantly bigger with more quests and content. (obviously less detailed and polished, but again - you shouldn't expect Witcher 3 level of quality in an online game).

@GabrielX-X: I'm not seeing how this is greedy. Aren't expansions usually launched for a price with mmos? As long as the price isn't rediculous and it actually expands the game decently I'm not really seeing the issue

@tony56723: this aint expansion, and ım talking console wise. We pay full price for game disk 60$, and you cant enter those area if you dont have Eso plus, your friends can enjoy those area if they are eso plus, and later this is aforce that you must pay in the end.

@GabrielX-X: if you're friends have ESO plus, then they are supporting the game (and devs) with their money. You seem like you don't want to support the game with money like your friends with ESO plus are doing.

No dough, no show.

@GabrielX-X: So you're upset that you have to pay for the expansion? Not really sure what you were expecting on that one, welcome to mmos I guess.

I also don't understand you're point about not being able to enter the new areas without the expansion, that's kind of the point of the expansion.

Look as long as the expansion actually expands the game and offers a bunch of new things to do and explore I think it's fair to charge for it. If not then yes it's not ok.

I just bought ESO on the Xbox yesterday. Played about two hours and ... it's boring as ****. I'll give it a little more time to grab me, but this game managed to make stopping an assassin cult from killing a king tedious, so I do not have high hopes.
Fortunately, I bought it with a gift card, so I'm not really out anything.

@Mogan: The first several hours are boring for sure (like in almost any MMO or RPG I can think of) , but if you manage to brave through them it really picks up. For me it's level 20-25 that really opens up the game.

@Mogan: The PvP portion, which opens up at level 10, is the best part of the game. I would say don't quit before you get to experience Cyrodiil.

@derceto: When I logged in for the first time last night, the town I ended up in was hopin'. If this game has population problems, I sure don't see them (at least on Xbox). It actually would have been BETTER with fewer people, because I had a quest that involved hunting a werewolf, and ended up basically standing in line to kill it with like a dozen other dudes, waiting for it to respawn.

@Mogan: I think I know what quest you're talking about. It was like that the first week too I remember like 25+ people sitting around waiting playing lutes, dancing, jumping sitting all waiting to finish the quest. And then you heard him speak and appear and the whole mob swarmed him and killed him in a few seconds lol. But it would only register as a kill for a few so I kept having to wait took about 3 or 4 respawns and they quick. Still enjoying the game though

@Mogan: yeah, there's definitely no problem with population and PvP seems to always be full as well.

I can't say it's a amazing game, but it is fun playing with friends.
