Elder Scrolls 6 Not in Development Right Now

"We aren't working on TES6 at the moment."

Given the massive success and enduring appeal of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, it seems like all but a certainty that Bethesda Game Studios will eventually make The Elder Scrolls VI. But it's not in development right now, according to Bethesda marketing executive Pete Hines.

Here's what Hines had to say in a recent Twitter exchange (via DigitalSpy):

No Caption Provided

The "We aren't working on TES6 at the moment" isn't totally clear. It could be that pre-production, but not full production, is already underway. Pre-production on projects often begins long before actual production gets started, so it's possible that some work towards the development of the unannounced game has been done. This is not confirmed, however.

A Guerrilla Games developer told us at E3 that pre-production on Horizon: Zero Dawn started six years ago, in 2010, but the studio has only been in full production for 2.5 years. From the sound of Hines' statement, however, it could be that even pre-production on the project has not started. We also wouldn't expect a new Elder Scrolls game to be announced on Twitter.

Skyrim, which was released in November 2011 to critical acclaim, has sold more than 20 million copies and a remastered version is coming later this year.

As for what Bethesda Game Studios is working on if it's not a new mainline Elder Scrolls game, the studio is cooking up "three big and crazy" projects, according to Fallout 4 and Skyrim director Todd Howard. He's since walked back that comment, however.

"I should have never said a number because we have so many things. You could add it up in different ways," he said in an interview. "You could say it's bigger or smaller. They're a long way off. I think the larger point was, no one should expect to hear about those [games] anytime soon. We always overlap projects. We just have more going on now than we had before."

Following the big success of mobile game Fallout Shelter, Bethesda plans to make more mobile titles in the future. A new Elder Scrolls spinoff game, The Elder Scrolls Legends, is coming out for mobile devices and PC later this year.

Looking further out, Howard said previously said he has "lots of ideas" for what might come next after Fallout 4. Another area that Bethesda is looking at is virtual reality, though Howard made it clear that it is still very much early days and it remains to be seen how much attention Bethesda will give to it.

"We're exploring some things [in VR]. We'll see where that heads," he said. "We don't want to talk about it quite yet until we've figured some things out."

If The Elder Scrolls VI ever comes out, what would you like to see from it? Let us know in the comments below.

I hope to visit Valenwood. I also hope it includes a multiplayer option, Just not split screen tho. Like how Fable 3 was. Perhaps the follower could be the 2nd player? Or even if it could be system link able, that would be cool too.

Don't worry you can get everything you want from playing ESO. Make sure to sub and spend money at the cash shop to get the full experience. Seriously though, an ES6 would cut into ESO sales, I'm sure, and ESO makes much more money than any single player game would. I mean look what Bioware did with Kotor, turned it into an MMO and never looked back. I'm sure that's because MMO's make so much more money over time. I hope Bethesda doesn't do the same and think that all future Elder Scrolls games can just be expansions for ESO.

They are working on it. It's just not in development yet. Which means it's in pre production. Todd Howard has already said they were working in it. This is a fluff piece not real news. If they have dlc left to create for Fallout 4 and a remastered version Skyrim. Also, like many people, I hope there is a new engine for ES6. Which would make even more sense to rerelease Skyrim. It gives them time to build a new engine. So, the article is correct, but poorly written. No, ES6 isn't in "development" it's in "pre-production" until Bethesda can finish up its hopefully new engine.

As much as it pains me to wait for the next Elder Scrolls game, I'm glad that they're not working on it yet. It must take so much energy and dedication to complete something like that. When they do start development proper, I want everybody at Bethesda to be hungry for it. So, if their creative energies are taking them in a different direction right now, I hope that they pursue that direction and get it all out of their system, so that they can return refreshed to ESVI.

Pretty sure either Todd Howard or Pete Hines said they didn't have the technology they needed yet for their vision of Elder Scrolls VI. (It was probably Todd Howard.)

They're not developing the game yet, but I have a feeling they're currently working on a brand new engine that'll be used for Elder Scrolls VI.

That's just speculation of course.

@Flen15: Yes because they're obviously looking at TES VI being a completely VR experience. TES VI is long, long way off yet.

I doubt pre-production hasn't started. Skyrim came out 5 years ago now, and you're telling me they haven't brainstormed/gotten ideas for its inevitable sequel? There's been discussions. There's been plans. Of course, they're not gonna tell us anything until they have something to show, and I prefer it that way. I like Bethesda's reveal policy. They may be looking to create a new engine before they start actual production too.

I replayed Skyrim about 6 months ago, I have no urge to play it again, even if its remastered. It looks like we wont see a new elder scrolls until 2020.

That's a shame. I'd rather have that than a Skyrim remaster or Fallout 4 DLC.

Naturally, I'd like to see more of everything in TES6. The largest map ever made. More enemy types. New creatures and monsters. More versatility with the story. I would've liked the option to become Jarl in Skyrim. So maybe an option to go from peasant to King. I'd like to have branching storylines that would give me a totally different experience on multiple play throughs. I'd like more support in DLC. I bought and played through all of Skyrims and it still didn't feel like enough. Keep expanding the map with larger quests. More guilds, factions and armies. I'd like to create my own character from scratch with every part customizable. I'd also like to create my own weapons and armor. Build my own house and even town. I'd like the decisions that I make to have a larger impact on the world so my game looks completely different than anyone else's also allowing for more replay value. I don't care if I have to wait another 5 years to get it either. I just want something with a lot more options for customization in story and appearance.

@packerfan7575: I don't think we need the largest map ever made. That can actually take away from the game. Skyrim was big enough, we don't need much more. Rather, we need more diversity, both in landscape and gameplay. So you're right about the other options. That's what they need to expand on.

As someone who liked Fallout 4 but was still really disappointed by it because it didn't live up to any previous Bethesda RPG I was really hoping we wouldn't have to wait too long for 6 or that at least a New Vegas for 4. There is the chance they're working on the next mainline Elder Scrolls but it just doesn't have a 6 or it could be another spin-off in another genre an RTS, straight action, something like XCOM.

I just realized with everything in 4 they've set the next mainline ES to be pretty damn ambitious with weapon and armor modding hell maybe even magic, 2 voices for every race (that's 20), and people will also want plenty of other dimensions whether it's along the lines of the gates of Oblivion or The Shivering Isles. Well whatever they do I hope it's in Black Marsh the Argonian homeland since I always play as one of them and they deserve some love besides who doesn't want a big swampland rain forest RPG? That sounds like the best of Morrowind, Cyrodiil, and Skyrim put together without the giant mushrooms and snow.

Really? Youve got to be kidding me. Did they forget how long a true Elder Scrolls game takes? And TES games are never really true "sequels", just in different regions. I liked Skyrim dont get me wrong, but nothing has come close to Morrowind if you ask me. Everything including the expansions were so good. Every crypt or cave had a purpose and reason for being there, so it was worth exploring them. Unique items actually had different models not just cheap quick re-skins. So many hidden armor and weapons as well like the Daedric Helms or dragon bone armor locked in a crypt at the bottom of the sea. Daedric quests actually took more than 5 minutes, etc. Oblivion was a joke, Skyrim like I said was good...with mods but still lacking. I really hope they go back to their Morrowind roots or make a "remaster for consoles"....hell what other game could you cheat and kill a main character but then go and find a book and magical dwarf and still finish the game.

I've already played Skyrim to death. I'm not going to buy a remaster. Why would I? Rather have TES6. Skyrim's main story was weak, imo, and one of the biggest barriers to replayability.

Just confirmed: The new Elder Scrolls is a mobile F2P, crowdfunded, multiplayer only, always-online, controllable only by Kinect, and set to release some time after Half Life 3.

Bethesda has stated the technology they need to make their vision of ES6 happen doesn't exist yet, so there is no point thinking about it.

They were probably waiting on the release of Vulkan and DX12 drivers to begin production work in earnest. I imagine they have all the concept stuff scoped out and know their direction with the new game, but the whole Gamebryo engine will need a massive overhaul to optimize itself for DX12 and Vulkan.

I'd actually prefer that it comes out sometime after 2018 so we can see how it works with the next generation of GPU memory architectures that NVidia and AMD will reveal (Volta, and Navi).

@troll_elite: They probably had a lot of the concepts for the series up to 6 mapped out for over a decade since they've just been going to every country in Tamriel. I'm pretty sure Black Marsh which is the homeland of the Argonian's is all that's left and I hope it is since I always play as one of them and a swampland rain forest RPG sounds awesome.

@troll_elite: I know it sounds silly... but I hope to god they don't use DX12, or make it optional.

When I play these games on PC, I use TriDef to make them play in full Stereoscopic HD-3D.
Unfortunately TriDef, as of now, only supports DX 9, 10, & 11.

@troll_elite: I think they need to go even longer. The current game engine for Skyrim and Fallout just cannot work anymore. Even Fallout 4 can't overcome it's current limitations. Before the next iteration of either series can be thought of, a new engine's got to be designed and built first.

@playstationzone: From the sounds of it, the Skyrim Remaster was partly done because it's going to be so long 'till the next Elder Scrolls. I'd dare say we should probably consider this release as the time to start counting the years till the new one on their development cycles. So... That would place it right about... 2021.

Which actually fits perfectly with my expectations that it wouldn't hit till 2020 at the earliest.

I hope they come out with an Elder Scrolls 6 eventually. They probably don't want to compete with the online game which is apparently moved a lot towards being a single player story based experience. I don't really like the game much though.

Todd Howard already said one of those "3 games" is ES6, particularly it's the third one.

Still, being in pre-production behind 2 large open world games puts it very far off.
I do not think we will see it until the 2020's

@MegamanX97: Me too, sounds like it wont be for years though.

When Todd Howard spoke about it, he stated it was the 3rd of the 3 games he mentioned. So, given that 2 Skyrim/Fallout 4 size games are coming before it, it will most likely be a very long time.

Don't expect to see it before the 2020's.

If they didn't even start development, then what are they doing with the franchise? Yeah, there's a decent MMO and a mobile card game on the way, but is that it? C'mon, Bethesda, I know you're working on Quake: Champions and Prey and other huge projects, but it doesn't hurt to have like two directors sketch the next game out. Perhaps it is in pre-production and they're trying to fool us until next E3. Or they don't know what else to do with the franchise so they do what everyone else is doing with the MMO and card game. Whatever, let's hope it's the former, developers usually lie to us about big titles.

@peterthegamer: My understanding is it's in pre-production, but the stuff they want to do in it they just don't quite have enough technological power for.

I'm hoping their endorsement of Scorpio is indicative of that machine having enough power.

Not surprised honestly, with Fallout 4 coming out not even a year ago and they are making DLC so they will focus on that. Plus I think the other reason is because of Elder scrolls online. ( In my opinion are very good game). I think everyone who is looking to play elder scrolls should try ESO. Its really good and has gotten much better. Plus with One Tamerial coming out in fall the game is going to be even better in my opinion

At least people aren't asking when Fallout 5 is coming out anymore. As soon as 4 released people started asking when they're going to start the next one. Bethesda never does that, they're like Rockstar in that they take time to make each game rather than stagger development of several iterations like EA and Ubisoft.
