Elder Scrolls 6 Is Coming, But Not Soon

"This studio is not a vending machine."

Given the massive critical and commercial success of 2011's The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, a sequel seems like a sure thing. While a sixth game in the fantasy series is not yet in active development, Bethesda marketing executive Pete Hines has come forward to say the studio will make the game in due time.

"The Elder Scrolls VI isn't in development," he said on Twitter. "We simply said we would make it eventually."

Back in June, Bethesda confirmed that The Elder Scrolls VI was not in development, with Hines saying, "We aren't working on TES6 at the moment." That statement isn't totally clear, however. It could be that pre-production, but not full production, is already underway. Pre-production on projects often begins long before actual production gets started, so it's possible that some work towards the development of the unannounced game has been done. This is not confirmed, however.

A Guerrilla Games developer told us at E3 that pre-production on Horizon: Zero Dawn started six years ago, in 2010, but the studio has only been in full production for 2.5 years. From the sound of Hines' statement, however, it could be that even pre-production on the project has not started.

The Elder Scrolls VI also came up in an interview Hines recently gave to MMORPG.

"This studio [Bethesda Game Studios] is not a vending machine," he said. "They're not a two-button vending machine, where first we press Elder Scrolls and then we press Fallout, and then we press Elder Scrolls and then we press Fallout... They're an incredibly talented studio of creative people. They've now made four games in a row, all of which were named Game of the Year, and they have a right to decide what they're interested in working on next and which direction they want to go."

Hines went on to say that he doesn't question director Todd Howard when he talks about what game he wants to make next.

"He's got reasons why, and I think once we get down the road, those reasons will be more evident to folks once we get there, or maybe not," Hines said. "But at the end of the day, these folks have a right to not just have to make Elder Scrolls game after Elder Scrolls game, which is why they switched to Fallout, and they have a right to stretch their legs and try something else or do something different.

"I know what they're working on for the next decade, and I think all of them are things to get excited about, for different reasons, and once they come out, folks will enjoy them for what they are."

Skyrim, which was released in November 2011 to critical acclaim, has sold more than 20 million copies and a remastered version is coming later this year.

"I know what they're working on for the next decade, and I think all of them are things to get excited about" -- Hines

As for what Bethesda Game Studios is working on if it's not a new mainline Elder Scrolls game, the studio is cooking up "three big and crazy" projects, according to Todd Howard. He's since walked back that comment, however.

"I should have never said a number because we have so many things. You could add it up in different ways," he said in an interview. "You could say it's bigger or smaller. They're a long way off. I think the larger point was, no one should expect to hear about those [games] anytime soon. We always overlap projects. We just have more going on now than we had before."

Following the big success of mobile game Fallout Shelter, Bethesda also plans to make more mobile titles in the future. Additionally, a new Elder Scrolls spinoff game, The Elder Scrolls Legends, is coming out for mobile devices and PC later this year.

Looking further out, Howard said previously said he has "lots of ideas" for what might come next after Bethesda Game Studios' latest release, Fallout 4. Another area that Bethesda is looking at is virtual reality, though Howard made it clear that it is still very much early days and it remains to be seen how much attention Bethesda will give to it.

"We're exploring some things [in VR]. We'll see where that heads," he said. "We don't want to talk about it quite yet until we've figured some things out."

Die-hard fans to this series will never agree with this but Skyrim was actually quite terrible but then again, i say that strictly speaking from a console gamer's perspective as i don't have access to mods. I suppose that might be a moot point from here on out though, it looks like Bethesda is now throwing in mod tools with their console games. Who knows, maybe i'll have a different opinion about the TES6 and mods in general when i have access to them...*shrug*

Or you know, they could just fix all the glaringly terrible flaws with their game to begin with. There are actually too many to list about Skyrim. If i had to sum it up in a nutshell i would say Skyrim is a game that tries to do A LOT of things with many features and mechanics but none of it is fleshed out or done well. Its a game that hits just about everything on a checklist so they can say "you can do anything in this game" but just about every other game that focuses more heavily on certain aspects, does those things much better than Skyrim.

Combat in this game is the most boring i've ever seen... anywhere and that is without a doubt THE most important aspect of any game. If the developers to a game do one thing right, it has to be the combat or whatever the primary activity the player will be doing is (tends to be combat in most games) and its appalling to me that Skyrim as successful and popular as it was, got away with combat like that.

I suppose at the time of its release, people were just supposed to be amazed with and immersed into the exploration, and visuals of the whole thing but honestly, once you get passed that, there really is nothing that cool or interesting to do and see, especially with unkillable NPCs.... (seriously, how is that even a good idea?)

They'll need to step up their game dramatically for TES VI to be interesting post-Witcher 3. Also...please work with a game engine that can handle animation transitions and facial anim properly. Oh and give some training workshops to your character artists. We're not in 2010 anymore.

@nanosuituser059: I'd like it to be set in Yokuda, the lost region of Tamriel where the Redguards originated from. If that doesn't go through, any other place will do, the world is such a nice place no matter where you are.

What would I like to see?

1. More "alive" NPC's. Witcher 3 got it right. There are hundreds of village folk, city residents, cats, dogs, old people, kids, and others, and most don't even care that you are there, just like real life.

2. Tangible consequences to the player's actions. You shouldn't be able to be the leader of the Dark Brotherhood, Mage's Guild, Fighter's Guild, Imperial Legion/Stormcloaks, etc. all with the same character. That makes no sense.

3. Better combat mechanics. There are so many action games and RPG's that have come out during the last 5-10 years with better combat mechanics - Assassin's Creed, Dark Souls, Shadow of Mordor, Arkham series, Witcher 3, to name a few. It's kinda pitiful that Elder Scrolls combat is still so rudimentary.

4. Animations and graphics that are actually on par with the rest of the AAA games that are released that same year.

5. A gripping main questline plot that makes sense and that isn't another iteration of the same tired "a special chosen champion emerges and prevents a coming apocalypse".

@jewell21: NPCs can be an issue, especially in Skyrim. Personally, Bethesda took a step back from Oblivion with the townspeople, they seemed so rigid in Skyrim but much better in Oblivion. Is that just me?

Being the leader of all the guilds sounds excellent, but you're right, it would make absolutely no sense.

Combat in Oblivion was fun, but on some enemies it sometimes felt like I couldn't inflict any damage at all, even with decent gear. They kinda fixed this in Skyrim by allowing you to bash enemies with your shield, but that only softened the blow. You could die in a matter of seconds in Oblivion.

Graphics in Skyrim look alright, but yeah they're not great. Draw distance is still good, but textures look weak. I don't know why but I like the style that Oblivion went for. Characters look terrible, but everything else holds up in my opinion.

YES, you're so right on the last one. While these story lines are good, they're getting old now. How about the main character getting killed in the end and being remembered as a legend? Or how about your character dying alone with all hope lost?

"Guys, why would we make a game when we can steal the graphics mods created 4 years ago for the pc, port them to the ps3 version and release it for ps4". I'm fine if they want to go an make a new IP or revist another one but seriously, you're a game studio. You make games. What are you makingif not ES6? Maybe a game where the combat system doesn't feel like it was designed in 2002?

In other words, we're waiting for Bethesda to figure out how to animate characters in an engine that wasn't built in 1932.

And or, for Todd Howard to get inspired again.

Hey! Just stop using old engines from 10,000 BCE, from an ancient aliens garage sale from a museum. It may be cheap, cool & even seem modern to you (of course..) but no one ever said we expected you be anything...WE JUST WANT THE ENGINE TO BE: Smarter, stronger, faster, stabile, easily updatable, mostly glitch free, less system conflicts..etc..I can't believe you guys can't do that by now. At some point, you'll have to give up that gamebyro joke. You know it's old, when there are 1940's cars that run better than that!

Let them take their time to make the next TES title. I don't expect them to announce anything new at least until 2018. Besides, they need to get rid of their obsolete Gamebryo engine. It's ridiculous how this piece of trash engine has lasted this long. Anyway, let's assume they have announced TES 6; I was reading plenty of comments here about where the next TES location ought to be. I saw a lot of "Akavir" in here. The problem with that is, first of all, Akavir is NOT part of Tamriel. If you know the Elder Scrolls lore, Akavir was an ancient empire from across the ocean who tried to invade Tamriel when she still wasn't unified under an emperor. In fact, Tiber Septim was Tamriel's first emperor; he was also the first Dragon Born. He became the first emperor because he unified the warring tribes/kingdoms of Tamriel under one banner to fight the Akavir threat. Do you guys remember the Cloud Ruler Temple from Oblivion ? It was built by invading Akavir soldiers as a front line to invade Tamriel from the north. Following their defeat, Tiber Septim made a truce with their commander and as per that agreement, they became the BLADES ! personal security for the newly crowned Tamriel emperor Tiber Septim. So if the new TES were to be based in Akavir, it would create numerous headaches since it would mean that gameplay would involve the Tamrielic races to be living and dwelling in Akavir which are they NOT native to. I predict the next TES to be based in one of the Southern provinces like Black Marsh, Valenwood, or, Elsweyr.

The interview with Todd Howard I saw he flat out said they had those three major projects, and that ES6 was that third one, but it's years and years away waiting for better technology, and they'd rather introduce new IPs in the interim.

Which fits with what is said here, but shows that they do plan on making it, we just have to be patient.

Damn that comment has some serious weight to it! 4 games in a row and all 4 made GOTY awards. No one else in the industry has that claim, and not many people are talented enough to be in a position to where you get to tell your boss what you will work on!

Modded Skyrim is still my favourite PC game. Play most days. Not really interested in a new version as new mods are constantly being posted on line changing the dynamics of the game. What would be appreciated however is more content / story lines for the existing version. I am currently looking forward to paying Skyrim in VR with Oculus. The mods are already available but require a vanilla re-install.

Can't really argue with him on this one. They make good games and they make them in their own good time. They have a track record of getting it right, so as unfortunate as it may seem that TES6 is long off at least you can take comfort in the knowledge that it will be a good game when it does show up.

Bethesda may not be in a hurry to create a new Elder Scrolls game, but that's the main thing I'm waiting for. I'm a die-hard Elder Scrolls fan and I can't wait to see the next game. I'm still playing Skyrim (over and over). I'd love to see a game in Black Marsh or Elsweyr. I'm pretty happy with how Skyrim works, but would like to see an improvement in the use of horses - something along the lines of Mount & Blade, where fighting from horseback is totally fun.

@sasren: Skywind does sound cool. Morrowind is my favorite game, Skyrim being second. I'm also waiting for the English version of Enderal to come out since I enjoyed Nehrim. I don't like the concept of boss fights, so I hope they don't do that, or at least make it optional. I prefer to play an archer / sniper with high sneak ability and approach all problems stealthily.

I would like to see several new/borrowed features in ES6:

*Native VR support (pretty sure it's a done deal since we're getting it in Fallout 4)
*Melee weapons with different attack types, and optimized for different attack types like Morrowind (slash/chop/thrust)
*Weapon mods like Fallout 4
*Much more specialized skill trees and abilities so that different character archetypes have a unique feel and play style
*Faction system like we saw in New Vegas
*Settlement crafting enhancements like Fallout 4
*Limited fast-travel like Witcher 3 (not quite as limited as Morrowind, but ES games are partly about exploration)
*Crafting schematics like Witcher 3
*Throwing weapons like Far Cry games

A few others come to mind, but those are my big improvement wishes.

So there won't be another TES game until well into the 2020s then, if they actually haven't started on it yet. Around a decade or possibly even longer between games is incredibly long. Anything over 5-6 years is too long IMO when we're talking the same series. I'm still young, but I'll be closer to middle aged when TES VI is likely to come out.

@waelse1: I think it'll be designed for Xbox 3 or PlayStation 6 actually...or at the end of Xbox 2 and PlayStation 5's life cycle. Neo and Scorpio will be old door stoppers by the time we see ES6.

Can't have it both ways folks. If you want them to ditch their current engine for something that really takes advantage of better hardware, then be prepared to wait until at least 2020 at the very earliest.

I for one am totally cool with throwing my life back into the remastered version of Skyrim for now. Fallout 4 was such a disappointment to me, I couldn't even force myself to complete it.

We're probably gonna be able to build and manage our own city and population somewhere in Tamriel, maybe even build ourselves our own fort? If these games keep evolving I see possible terrain manipulation in the future... and maybe even flying across the map on dragons since it seems they are back now...
