Elder Scrolls 6 Is Coming, But Not Soon

"This studio is not a vending machine."

Given the massive critical and commercial success of 2011's The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, a sequel seems like a sure thing. While a sixth game in the fantasy series is not yet in active development, Bethesda marketing executive Pete Hines has come forward to say the studio will make the game in due time.

"The Elder Scrolls VI isn't in development," he said on Twitter. "We simply said we would make it eventually."

Back in June, Bethesda confirmed that The Elder Scrolls VI was not in development, with Hines saying, "We aren't working on TES6 at the moment." That statement isn't totally clear, however. It could be that pre-production, but not full production, is already underway. Pre-production on projects often begins long before actual production gets started, so it's possible that some work towards the development of the unannounced game has been done. This is not confirmed, however.

A Guerrilla Games developer told us at E3 that pre-production on Horizon: Zero Dawn started six years ago, in 2010, but the studio has only been in full production for 2.5 years. From the sound of Hines' statement, however, it could be that even pre-production on the project has not started.

The Elder Scrolls VI also came up in an interview Hines recently gave to MMORPG.

"This studio [Bethesda Game Studios] is not a vending machine," he said. "They're not a two-button vending machine, where first we press Elder Scrolls and then we press Fallout, and then we press Elder Scrolls and then we press Fallout... They're an incredibly talented studio of creative people. They've now made four games in a row, all of which were named Game of the Year, and they have a right to decide what they're interested in working on next and which direction they want to go."

Hines went on to say that he doesn't question director Todd Howard when he talks about what game he wants to make next.

"He's got reasons why, and I think once we get down the road, those reasons will be more evident to folks once we get there, or maybe not," Hines said. "But at the end of the day, these folks have a right to not just have to make Elder Scrolls game after Elder Scrolls game, which is why they switched to Fallout, and they have a right to stretch their legs and try something else or do something different.

"I know what they're working on for the next decade, and I think all of them are things to get excited about, for different reasons, and once they come out, folks will enjoy them for what they are."

Skyrim, which was released in November 2011 to critical acclaim, has sold more than 20 million copies and a remastered version is coming later this year.

"I know what they're working on for the next decade, and I think all of them are things to get excited about" -- Hines

As for what Bethesda Game Studios is working on if it's not a new mainline Elder Scrolls game, the studio is cooking up "three big and crazy" projects, according to Todd Howard. He's since walked back that comment, however.

"I should have never said a number because we have so many things. You could add it up in different ways," he said in an interview. "You could say it's bigger or smaller. They're a long way off. I think the larger point was, no one should expect to hear about those [games] anytime soon. We always overlap projects. We just have more going on now than we had before."

Following the big success of mobile game Fallout Shelter, Bethesda also plans to make more mobile titles in the future. Additionally, a new Elder Scrolls spinoff game, The Elder Scrolls Legends, is coming out for mobile devices and PC later this year.

Looking further out, Howard said previously said he has "lots of ideas" for what might come next after Bethesda Game Studios' latest release, Fallout 4. Another area that Bethesda is looking at is virtual reality, though Howard made it clear that it is still very much early days and it remains to be seen how much attention Bethesda will give to it.

"We're exploring some things [in VR]. We'll see where that heads," he said. "We don't want to talk about it quite yet until we've figured some things out."

What would you like to see from an Elder Scrolls VI if it ever happens? Let us know in the comments below!

"This studio [Bethesda Game Studios] is not a vending machine," he said. "They're not a two-button vending machine, where first we press Elder Scrolls and then we press Fallout, and then we press Elder Scrolls and then we press Fallout..."

that's ridiculous to read, take into consideration that since 2006 all the games bethesda has developed has been either a Fallout or an Elder Scrolls, this is beyond hilarious... if he wants to make a point at least some proof would be nice...

@restatbonfire: yeah, i also forgot DOOM isn't it? just for a reminder brink wasn't developed by bethesda, rage was developed by id software, i suppose you can't tell the difference between a publisher and a developer... huh... bethesda only published all of those games, they didn't develop them...

Maybe with their next game they can:

1. Get a new freaking engine already and ditch the super terrible gamebyro.

2. Hire good animators

3. Hire some good writers.

I like exploring in Bethesda games but all of the above really really drags the experience down. They made beautiful worlds that make you want to explore and roam around every nook and cranny and then they shove in a really janky poorly animated game engine on top of it and then tie it all together with a very cliche storyline and no where near the nuance or depth of studios like Obsidian or CdProjektred.

If they can just fix those issues they could make some truly amazing games. I don't even care if their next game is TES or Fallour or whatever, just a good open world game that has a new engine with good fluid animations and some GOOD writers on board to make a good story with interesting quests/characters.

Oh yes, it is entirely unreasonable for fans to be asking about a new Elder Scrolls game, 5 YEARS after the last entry in the series. How very unfair, after all Bethesda Game Studios are a tiny team who are only capable of focusing on one project at a time.

@babymillor: well to be fair they sat on Fallout 4 for 5 years (7 if you dont count new vegas) and they released it around the time they announced it. Maybe they're doing the same for Elder Scrolls

I have played Elder Scrolls since 2 and 3 on console, then Oblivion, Skyrim. All I can say is dollar per hour of entertainment, nothing can beat it. I spent $60 bucks for 2 people to play lazer tag for 7-8 mins while i easily spent 400hrs on Skyrim.

I enjoy those games alot and enjoy the worlds they create. Cannot wait for the next one.

Two thoughts:

First, I feel like (and secretly hope) that this is a PR and marketing move rather than a truism. Coming out and saying "yeah we are deep in development" would start the hype train on full blast. Doing that does a few things: 1. it would probably hurt the roll out of their new IP's they have been developing that don't carry the same name recognition and 2. Fallout 4's success showed them that a drawn out hype is not necessary for sales numbers.

Second, if this game truly is years out I am torn. On one hand, in five years I will be in a completely different spot in life and it may be hard to enjoy a game like I enjoy them now. BUT at the same time, I am more pumped about a game if the developers themselves are craving to create it rather than being slapped with deadlines on a property they may be over saturated with. Let the ideas marinate. Let them learn from mistakes and get stoked on new ideas.

Maybe they are actually taking their time to update their game engine to take advantage of the latest and greatest graphics capabilities and such? I don't mind the wait, even with their bugs and such, all of their games are really fun to play and modding them just extends their replay value to hundreds of hours more when some mods create entire new lands to explore as large as official campaign DLC such as Dawnguard in scope. I predict it will be until the end of this decade we may see Elder Scrolls VI, just in time for both the Scorpio and NEo to have their bugs ironed out and have been out for two years or so, so development should be much easier on them too by that time. With the XBOX One now tying into Windows 10, that should hopefully make the PC version much easier to work on this time. I look forward to their announcement and this remaster of Skyrim since I already own all the DLC and such on PC.

They have stated that they won't do ES6 until the tech to realize their vision becomes available. That sort of statement is usually in the realm of 5 years off, and that's just for the tech to become available. It could take another 5 years after that.

Takes time to ensure your games all meet the required amounts of bugs and game breaking glitches. Making shoddy games is apparently tougher than it sounds.

Oh, and VR. Oh boy.

They're probably working on elder scrolls titles perpetually, the real question is how many people are working on the next title at a given time.

Please hire a competent writer this time! Both Skyrim and Fallout 4 disappointed me massively in the story and side missions.

They clearly know how to make open world games but if I don't give a single **** about anyone or anything in the world why should I explore it?

I was exploring Fallout 4 in the HOPES I found something interesting and never did. Biggest disappointment this gen for me.

It is really annoying. With Oblivion and Fallout 3 I explored ever inch of every section of the map. Not because I was forcing myself to do it but because I WANTED to. Skyrim and Fallout 4 I got so bored I one day realised I couldn't be bothered to fire up the game and then never went back.

@dexda: Ohhh...Myyy...Gawd....I agreee...with yoooouuu! So much! I got bored of Fallout 4 too! I could play both F3 & Oblivion 4 for damn ever. I wasn't swayed by the abomination that is the Red Rings of Death! RROD be damned. I'm playing these games! Now I hardly have any crashes, if at all, on PS4 during the monthly sessions of Fallout, when DLC comes out. It gets so boring, that as soon as I run out of some resource, I plan for the next day to go resource hunting, but forget it! It takes me so long to get back to it. I might as well just wait for the DLC to come out. So the pacing is lost over & over again. I have NO idea what's going on at this point. All I know is: Build. HOOOOUSE....AH-GAAAAIN....

You think I wanna build a MASSIVE HOUSE, & then regret it? Where would I start building the house, with all those hills?! Now I can I would've had to re-do my whole beach house, since it would be taller, 1st floor knocking into he second floor, then knocking into the roof! Which equals whole house needing to be redone! And it would've all been because I didn't wait for the Vault DLC! lol I would've been so mad at myself.

Before the vault DLC it was just a beach that:

Needs more room. STOP cluttering it up with:

Tall & stretched out far--piles of debris.

With too many hills & houses I can't possibly use or destroy (like in Sanctuary)

Noisy mostly unmovable skeletons (unless I had a lot of rockets...)

And WHAT IS WITH the regenerating dead bodies?!?!?! Including the beach & that other house on the hill.. "Croup Manor" with recent zombie bodies, generating. I said forget it. And never went back.

So yeah, All that just to lay groundwork for a house! I run out of resources! Stand there, save, & Leave. I come back next month lol

I think this game is a hot mess.

I work hard to like this game. And I ran out of resources for my vault. Haven't played in weeks. Sooo...I'm waiting for new DLC! LOL

You haven't heard of layoffs at Bethesda, so they are working on something. It has to be a big project, since Bethesda is a big studio. They obviously are working on ES6, they just won't confirm it because they don't want to whip us up into a ferver. Remember, they denied Fallout 4 for years before they revealed it a few months before it came out.

For not being a "vending machine" they sure are great at simplifying things down into little packages to piecemeal out for people...

If you enjoyed skyrim remotely, I urge you to play Morrowind and Oblivion. When I was young I played morrowind for literally hundreds of hours getting lost in the immense world. I wondered how far video games will truly go if this was the standard for the early 2000's. Flash to skyrim's simplified release coupled with horrible skill trees and little to no character development- to Fo4's horrible lack of RPG elements.

Is this the same company? I know they're using the same exact gamebyro engine from more than a decade ago, but it sure doesn't feel like the same quality of game they used to be known for.

I just hope ES6 turns out to be good and brings new aspects to the game. Fallout 4 was okay, the DLC poor, but it's still a bug fest and they could've added so much more while developing it. To me, Fallout 4 was just a mix of the previous games with like 2 added things, not much was different. Everything is dead (mods showed me that fallout 4 would've been much better with greenery and cosmetic changes), the environment is bland, settlement building gets old, and exploring gets boring rather quickly. It would be cool if you could travel around on a motorcycle like you do a horse in ES. Out of the 2 though, I prefer ES because you can choose a race, weapons and magic, and the exploring is much better. I remember when Oblivion and Skyrim came out I could spend mad hours playing. I'll be playing my ass off with the remaster later this year for sure! That should hold me over till ES6 comes out.
