Elder Scrolls 6 And Starfield Will Not Be At E3 2019, Bethesda Reports

Maybe we'll see more Starfield in 2020.

Although Bethesda has already confirmed it will hold a press conference at E3 2019, don't expect to see either The Elder Scrolls VI or Starfield at this year's show. Both games may have been announced and given tiny teasers during E3 2018, alongside more detailed reveals for Fallout 76 and Rage 2, but Bethesda won't be showing anything new this year.

"That's just a little sneak peek at the technology that we've been building," Bethesda executive producer Todd Howard said during a PAX East panel, in regards to further details about a new game engine. "People are going to see [the tech] at first, actually, in Starfield. And so that tech will have like the second version of it in TES6, and--before everyone asks--please be patient. It's going to be a long time. It's not something we're going to be talking about at E3--either of those games--this year. And so patience, please. But given the [Elder Scrolls] anniversary, we did want to give everybody a taste."

It's not that much of a surprise to hear that neither game will be shown at this year's E3, given that their showings from last year's event implied both titles are still in the early stages of development. Howard has said he already knows the release dates for both games, but he's "not going to tell" as it "would be foolish to say it."

During PAX Australia 2018, Bethesda marketing boss Pete Hines and ZeniMax Online Studios game director Matt Firor said The Elder Scrolls VI is still a long way off, most likely releasing on the next generation of console hardware. Howard said something similar about Starfield during last year's E3, but clarified, "I can't absolutely say yes to [leaving current generation consoles behind]. We're not going to limit the game that way yet. I'm willing to [leave current generation consoles behind] but it's not a priority right now. I'd put it that way."

Next to nothing is known about Starfield, other than it's the first new IP Bethesda has announced in 25 years. The first and only trailer for the game showcases a planet outlined by a distant sun, only for the camera to pan down and focus on a small space station which is seemingly sucked into some sort of black hole.

Even less is known about The Elder Scrolls VI. According to its trailer, the game takes place in a mountainous region. There are some trees and patches of fog. That's about it. Even with so little information, though, fans are still theorizing and trying to piece together The Elder Scrolls VI's setting.

In the meantime, Bethesda has plenty of other games to occupy players as they wait. Fallout 76 has already received the first of three major expansions, and the other two are scheduled for later this year. The Elder Scrolls: Blades has technically released as well. Also, Rage 2, Doom Eternal, and Wolfenstein: Youngblood (all published by Bethesda) are all scheduled to release in 2019--the latter of which comes with a pretty cool incentive to upgrade to the Deluxe Edition.

Hopefully they will spend more time on The Elder Scrolls 6, if it is to be a decent follow-up to Skyrim. I will be amazed if it is that good.

Is anyone surprised? I thought it was very clear Bethesda was pulling a Square Enix when they announced those games

I wish the studio would only make The Elder Scrolls single player games period. Most studio's would be very happy to do just that. They could put out new games every 3 yrs and everyone would be happy, but them. Must have more money! More games! More! More! More!

Who cares what the paying fans actually want!

Remember Duke Nukem and Half Life? After too long, no one cares anymore. Period.

What RPGs ARE you working on that's going to come out soon, exactly?

Don't say Fallout 76 updates.

@santinegrete: I would love that, but it’s doubful. That series hasn’t really done well enough for them to have incentive to make a third. I hope I’m wrong though.

Disappointed. I have high hopes for Starfield. A simple update on their vision for the game would be nice.

TES6 is very likely going to be even more dumbed down and RPG feature stripped than skyrim, at this point I don't give a crap about the franchise anymore.

When are people going to learn? No Elder Scrolls VI until they milk ESO for 10 years. That is why other publishers are doing the same thing. Why do you think there is no GTA 6 or Warcraft 4. People need to remember it is the publishers fault not the developers, they get paid by hour just like you and I. Publishers what services not single player games.

@mythicwolf4307: GTA is a 6 year development game, not to mention they recently released RDR2. How many people do you think Rockstar employ ?

@mythicwolf4307: It's sad but true. I'd be okay with that if ESO was good. I tried and tried to like that game but the combat is so boring.

There won't be an Elder scrolls sequel as long as Skyrim keeps selling.

It's just like GTA6.

Why should they release i? To sabotage their sales?

If it ain't broke...

This isn't news. They've said for a long time, since the reveal itself, that we weren't going to see Starfield for many years and that ES6 was many years beyond that. I'm not sure what anyone is expecting, but "We're not showing anything about these for many years" does not translate into "We've got stuff to show you in 12 months. As late as December 2018 they said they hadn't even started coding ES6 and that it would be months just to add the tech to their engine they want to even start making it. It's like posting a story titled "Half Life 3 still not confirmed."

They should just cancel thier E3 showing. No info at all on at the very least Starfield means that for quite a few people there's no reason to watch. DOOM Eternal is just more DOOM. Rage 2? Meh. Borderlands 3 is coming and it will most certainly be a better and more interesting open world. Wolfenstein: Youngblood? Meh.

Most people pay attention to thier conferences for three things. Elder Scrolls, Fallout, and now Starfield.

@Donut0389 People don't just pay attention for BGS games. I want to see what Arkane is up to, I want to see what they have planned long term for F76 and, I'm definitely interested in Wolfenstein and Doom. :

@loveblanket: You’re the only one who wants to see what they have planned for Fallout 76. No true Fallout fan wants anything to do with that game. Fallout is all about the single player experience.

Starfield sounds several years away, they may be waiting for XB2/PS5. Sounds like it will far advanced over Skyrim visually.

Hummm... an early access is NOT a "technical release". It's not any kind of release at all. It's an early access, hence why it's called an early access.

Can't believe it's been 8 years since skyrim released, and we been hearing about starfiled since 2015, yet both titles are in "early development"?...

@Dragerdeifrit Starfield isn't in early development. Pete Hines said after E3 last year that the game was playable and had been for some time. That doesn't mean it's near finished. You're looking at Starfield in 2021 and ES6 in 2024 and they've never denied that. :

@bussinrounds Are you for real? Bethesda might be the least hype company in the gaming industry. They haven't even announced their last few games until about 5 months before release. They told us they were making ES6 as if anyone thought there would never be another one and told us the title of their next game followed by "we won't be answering any questions about those games because they're years off". If you think that's "hype", I don't think you understand the word.:

@JDFS They aren't. Bethesda's E3 show is Bethesda Softworks, the publisher. Bethesda Game Studios is a developer and is a different company. The E3 shows have always been Bethesda Softworks and BGS shows up when they have something to show like any other dev studio under Bethesda Softworks umbrella. If BGS shows up at all, it will probably just be to unveil whatever is coming for F76 the rest of this year and maybe some of next year and something about ES Blades. But I've not heard anything about BGS being at E3.:

Howardian sensibilities ruined The Elder Scrolls. Only Morrowind managed to endure the onslaught on account of the traditional sensibilities, still strong within the development effort at the time, that were established by the far nobler Daggerfall. Contemporary Bethesda is a joke, an insult upon the whole of the Critterdom. ?

@loveblanket: Bethesda Game Studios made Morrowind, not Todd Howard. That said, it's not the intent of the remark to dismiss The Elder Scrolls III as their greatest effort, which might even have been on account of his involvement and not in spite of it, but to signal it as the paradigm shift responsible for the pejorative streamlining of mechanical considerations within the franchise. You're free to believe what you will, Loveblanket.

@asnakeneverdies Nope, Todd Howard was the project leader for Morrowind and he came up with the concept for the game. Nobody said he made the game single handed, but he was the lead design and it was his baby and remember that they started with about 10 people on that game and it was do or die for the company. As far as mechanical considerations for the series, they've gotten better since Morrowind with one exception, spell crafting. Spell crafting was correctly cut because it broke the game balance. Dialogue in Morrowind was repeated garbage with characters having few if any of their own lines beyond generic dialogue they pulled from a spreadsheet. The combat system is the worst in the modern series. Some may disagree on role playing grounds, but when I',m level 10 and I'm swinging a warhammer at a worm that can barely move I want contact to be contact, not a dice roll. Yes, the world was more interesting, but nowhere near to the level people credit it for. Most of it is generic fantasy with some odd architecture, creatures, and an occasional giant mushroom here and there. Nothing that hasn't been seen in a thousand games. The "get better as you do things" system in Oblivion and Skyrim are much better than the generic D&D like leveling system. If I use a sword everyday and seek training in a sword, it makes sense that I get better using a sword. If I use nothing but fireball and healing spells and when I level up I take a point in sword that doesn't make any sense at all. I'm sorry, but I turned in my nostalgia glasses a long time ago when I had my childhood shattered by going back to replay the Ultima series. Morrowind was an incredible game for it's time, but saying that was the peak of the series to me is either pure nostalgia goggles, or just vapid internet troll hate for Bethesda which they don't deserve even with the Fallout 76 launch mess. Sorry if my comment is harsh, but this internet culture of just hating on people and things to levels completely undeserved in mind numbing to me.:

@loveblanket: Well, I believe RPG interactions should always be surrogate, and I disagree entirely with almost every single one of your points, Loveblanket.

What little is left of the original scope has been pejoratively streamlined, and nowhere is this more evident than in the combat and progression component implementation featured within the contemporary games.

Improving skills by rote, and non contradictory graphical representations, are indeed sensible notions. However, those choices were made for the sake of accessibility, not the simulation, and have negatively impacted it ever since.

There is simply no way of internalizing complex organic interactions. Especially when signal bandwidth is limited by technological affordance, and further compromised by the input resolution of the average interface.

The contemporary approach suffers from self induced severe bottle necking, leading to a core gameplay loop of mindless repetition, while also being unfit for the development of strong mental models.
