EA: Women 'too big an audience to ignore'

While underlining the female demographic's importance at the Women in Games Conference, EA VP Sharon Knight said developers should avoid making games that only target women.

NEWPORT, Wales--Electronic Arts vice president of Europe Online, Sharon Knight, believes that if game developers and publishers were to ignore the female audience, it would be "a great waste." Knight was the first speaker at this year's Women In Games Conference at the University of Wales, the fourth such annual event.

Making games which appeal to both genders will only increase the success of the medium, she believes, and create potentially hugely successful titles. She gave the example of the film Titanic, which surpassed Star Wars as the most successful movie of all time, because "women loved it, they went to see it in droves, they went to see it multiple times."

That said, Knight thinks it's a mistake to try to create games solely for a female audience. "If you look at how other media forms have tapped into women, for example, you don't see movies and music being exclusive to men," She said. "Women enjoy all forms of entertainment. We [at EA] want to avoid making 'pink games.' Women enjoy many of the same features in gameplay as men do. The way EA sees it is there's a lot of untapped potential out there."

Knight believes a big reason the Wii has been successful is that women find it more accessible than other consoles. "The Wii levels the playing field," she said. "You don't embarrass yourself--you can grab it and right away start having fun. ... [Wii games] don't require the same investment to learn and to master how to pick up and play [as other consoles' games]."

EA's The Sims, one of the most popular franchises of all time, has a 65 percent female audience, said Knight. However, she admitted the series' success was more of a happy accident. "No, Will [Wright, the creator of the game] was definitely not targeting the game at women," she said, laughing. "It just resonated. I think it was at the brink of the whole 'who do you want to be?' trend. You can make an avatar that you play as yourself, as a character that looks a lot like you, or you can be somebody wildly different. Now you're seeing that everywhere."

Were women ever so small that their impact on gaming never made a difference?

I have noticed that my Wii has a different effect on women, compared to my PS2 or PC.

Having been a female game lover for many years, I can personally attest to the fact the we are indeed somewhat rare. I have tried many times to get other girls into them, with little success. As far as women(as a group) liking a specific genre or type of game, I can't say... I like all kinds- resident evil and silent hill series, all the final fantasy and zelda, dbz and street fighter, medal of honor, sims, nes, ps, ps2, xbox, pc- you name it. Personally, my favorites are survival horror, a good storyline with cutscenes will hook me every time.

this brings up a serious question. why are males made fun of for going to see star wars multiple times, when women watch chick flix like titanic a dozen times and are never commented on.

I don't see what the big deal is...Movies, television, books...all forms of entertainment are marketed towards so many different demographics. It's not brain surgery to realize that women are a demographic that can make video game companies a lot of money. They DO make up over have the population in most of the developed countries in the world afterall. Where I disagree here is where it's mentioned that the Wii is successful with women because it "levels the playing field." This suggests that women are, at the base level, inferior to men in some way in the gaming arena. Silly mixed messages. Women don't need a gimmick. Just build the games and they will come.

Y'know, given that women are about half the population, I really don't see why gaming companies didn't see the potential revenue stream from games that women can play as well more quickly. At any rate, I agree with Sharon Knight, the pitfall of making "pink games" is that developers can try -too- hard to make games to appeal exclusively to women, because as she says: "Women enjoy many of the same features in gameplay as men do" My time spent playing games with my extremely non gaming sister (who also hates the sims like Lady Bahamut does, and likes proper RPG's like Planescape Torment) is that fun and good gameplay can transcend gender, and that there's a lot of stuff in games right now that appeals to women as it is... ...it just isn't "tweaked" enough to specifically cater to them in addition to men. Like the "3 decent/good romance options for men, 1 really shabby romance option who's a jackass" situation we had/have with Baldur's Gate 2, and other such inequities.

Dear game companies: Quit trying to target a specific audience and just worry about making a good game. A good game will find its own audience. (Although it would be nice if you could make a game that doesn't have a female in a supporting "needs rescuing" role and/or is present only for blatant fanservice, but that's only a minor symptom of a bigger problem.) Dear gamers: You as a whole are the reason why some women don't get into games. Considering that I still hear gamers toss around sexist crap like "Women are incapable of being good at fighters/FPSs/etc." and "GTFO my guild and get back in the kitchen", it's no surprise that girls and women are still hesitant to get into games.

It's just EA trying to make more money again. But I'm all for gamer chicks. Hell it's one less argument for me and my girlfriend. Although the chances of them becauming hardcore and playing gears. It's pretty low no matter hwat EA say.

How many people here have actually tried to get their female friends into gaming and how many of you have succeeded? Personally I haven't done that well, actually failed dismally would be more accurate.

Sims seems to have been a great way for women to enjoy being in the kitchen and doing housework. Aw, shoot, that didn't come out the way I wanted it to.

The DS and the touch generation sucked my fiancee into gaming... we bought a second DS for her, and I wouldn't DARE challenge her in a game of Elite Beat Agents. (It was also an easy gateway to getting a Wii.) Games are starting to focus on the most important factor... FUN!

Cool, I never thought there'd be a big Games Conference in Newport of all places, pretty cool that I live quite near by. Anyway, women have obviously made 'The Sims' the success that it is today, I am the only boy of about 5 people in my French class who play the game. That being said, I also know about 7 boys who play the game too, theres probably a lot more people that I don't even know about either. Also, the DS has captured a huge female following with games like Animal Crossing and such, plus the pink console. I know loads of girls who've bought one now.

I agree with one thing. I do see a lot more non-gaming women picking up a Wii and playing with it (god that sounds so bad!) instead of the next-gen consoles. The Wii is a lot more interactive, and more accesible to those who are new to gaming. And Titanic was the biggest load of crap I ever seen.
