EA: Women 'too big an audience to ignore'

While underlining the female demographic's importance at the Women in Games Conference, EA VP Sharon Knight said developers should avoid making games that only target women.

NEWPORT, Wales--Electronic Arts vice president of Europe Online, Sharon Knight, believes that if game developers and publishers were to ignore the female audience, it would be "a great waste." Knight was the first speaker at this year's Women In Games Conference at the University of Wales, the fourth such annual event.

</img>

Making games which appeal to both genders will only increase the success of the medium, she believes, and create potentially hugely successful titles. She gave the example of the film Titanic, which surpassed Star Wars as the most successful movie of all time, because "women loved it, they went to see it in droves, they went to see it multiple times."

That said, Knight thinks it's a mistake to try to create games solely for a female audience. "If you look at how other media forms have tapped into women, for example, you don't see movies and music being exclusive to men," She said. "Women enjoy all forms of entertainment. We [at EA] want to avoid making 'pink games.' Women enjoy many of the same features in gameplay as men do. The way EA sees it is there's a lot of untapped potential out there."

Knight believes a big reason the Wii has been successful is that women find it more accessible than other consoles. "The Wii levels the playing field," she said. "You don't embarrass yourself--you can grab it and right away start having fun. ... [Wii games] don't require the same investment to learn and to master how to pick up and play [as other consoles' games]."

EA's The Sims, one of the most popular franchises of all time, has a 65 percent female audience, said Knight. However, she admitted the series' success was more of a happy accident. "No, Will [Wright, the creator of the game] was definitely not targeting the game at women," she said, laughing. "It just resonated. I think it was at the brink of the whole 'who do you want to be?' trend. You can make an avatar that you play as yourself, as a character that looks a lot like you, or you can be somebody wildly different. Now you're seeing that everywhere."

I was misled by the title into thinking that this article would be about my current favorite topic of intense personal interest, plus-size women gamers.

How about people start making more games for the Wii and get them out on the shelves already...

finaleve said it best, just make games. no game is going to appeal to everyone or even most of everyone. same goes for all other media, movies, books, music whatever. there are too many factors to what makes a great/successful game but one of those factors isnt because it catered to one group. i agree with that point but what makes less successful games isnt due to NOT catering to any certain group.

Actually alot of girls play roleplaying games, it's just that they make male avatars to avoid the annoying male teens who acts as if they have never interacted with a female that was not in their kitchen. ..What the hell sort of game would they make anyway....it's like impossible to make girly games that don't suck. "Go to the movies simulator" "the gossip" "party of honor" "shopping spree" "the sims 3".

The reason why so many chicks played the sims is they enjoy re-creating their own lives and messing with it. Men like to fantasize about completely different stuff (Sword Elf Dragon crap that women dont get into)

I agree more girl gaming I mean my girl plays with my Wii all the time. I mean hardly a day goes by when she doesn't grab my wii and start jerking it around. Women seem to love Wii's and I am all for them playing with them. She is like "hey it aint the biggest wii, and sometimes the fun just doesn't last long, but your Wii is a great Wii" and I am thankful for that

Yeah we need some cooking, cleaning, washing clothes and Ironing sims for the Wii..... I can see it now "Super Get Dinner Ready By Six O'clock:Before the Man Gets Home Turbo Edition" Optimized for the pink DS. Of course we already have Cooking Mama, Super Princess Peach (with whining power ups no less), and Barbie games. Aren't those female enough? Gahhhh What do you women want? (kidding ladies JUST KIDDING tongue firmly in cheek Trust me your beautiful really)

EA will just confuse their already poor business model by trying to develop games targetted to a female demographic. Perhaps they can get away with making a game like The Sims and sell it for a profit (due to uninformed consumers) but otherwise, EA needs to stop worrying about not pleasing women, and it needs to worry about making decent games. What's the last EA game that was even remotely good? They basically own the sports market but have not introduced anything new in any of these games for the past 5-6 years. This article is just to call attention to women, as EA attempts to sell some lackluster video games that they think will appeal to the female gender. I for one know many girls who enjoy video games just as they are. The article should be rephrased to say they are targetting women who do not game, but I do not believe EA can develop any game that would draw more women gamers into the gaming industry. Maybe Blizzard can do it. Not EA. Sorry.

As a female gamer, allow me to plead with EA: for the love of God, please don't start making female games. Titanic sucks. The Sims suck. Do you wonder why the Gears of War movie will never air on Lifetime? Why there is an Oprah's book club, not a Mike Ditka book club? Because certain things don't fit certain media. If we are talking traditional female things here, then we aren't talking competition, gadgets, trash-talking, or gamerscores. We are talking hugging, coffee, and everyone being a winner. I am a gamer, and that means competition, technolust, etc....all things that aren't traditionally female. If I wanted a traditionally female hobby, I'd take up going to the mall and talking about boys. The point here is that the medium of video games is not intended for and by its very nature (being competitive, etc.) is not traditionally female.

Death2009 "Again, Nintendo has killed the industry and next gen will be the lowest selling gen since the snes days! There will be a full blown crash after that! Thanks Nintendo!" I hope you're being sarcastic, because Nintendo never killed the industry, especially if it's alive today. If anything it saved it with the NES and it's improving it right now with the DS and Wii.

That is true that games need some skill, I remember how I had a hard time learning how to perfectly control an analog stick on the N64 when I was 10, and nowadays, there are usually a pair of analog sticks on a controller. Guess its tough for some to learn how to use two when they never even used one stick

I can't imagine why anyone would want to make a game specifically directed towards women. There just isn't enough money to make from it.

I never said that other men didn't play the game. I'm merely trying to speak for myself and the dozens of males I've become acquainted with via college. We laugh about how many people we've fragged in GOW or Halo2, we snicker at the incompetent A.I. in strategy games, we bemoan bad balance patches for Warhammer 40k, and so on. We do a lot of stuff. There is one thing we don't do though, and that is the Sims. Just the name of it makes us ill, for we hate it greatly. Within us is an aversion to having to repeat the miserable torture that is life, especially as some strange form of recreation. We play games to escape life and our economic, social, and political woes. We don't play games to relive them. The Sims is just a horrid game. We have enough problems without having to relieve those problems again and again for entertainment.

these wii games that he talks about that are easy to pick up and have fun are the ones where you just wave the thing around, this could be achieved by using a single button on a controller. people just get excited about the wii because its a new peripheral like a dancemat or a guitar controller. wii games can take just as much time to master as other games. anyone ever played redsteel? that game has a huge learning curve, its so dificult to aim. well thats a terrible game but theres not any good wii games that rely significantly on the wiimote. games like zelda only use the wiimote as a fancy button which makes you attack when shook. its the same with the ds where the good games which are more than just mini games barely use the touch screen. the wiimote and the ds touch screen are gimmiks. sure they can make minigames more fun. but for larger scale games they dont add anything and usually take away.

@Lazyimperial I am a man and I play the Sims. It used to be one of my favorite games a while back, but I don't play it as much anymore... But it is still a good game, for both males and females. Maybe you and your friends don't play it, but there are many men who do and enjoy it....you're not the only men in the world you know...so don't act like just because you don't do something, that no other men do..

Women In Games Conference? LMFAO! You really need that? PLEASE! Women already buy games, like finaly fantasy! Knight is also an idiot, I bet more men buy the weak than women. This is just another attempt to make women seem more important and men less. Do this twits know the Wii ads have more men than women on them? NO! There is no need for this stupidity, just make good games and people will buy them. And lady, adjust for inflation Star Wars made more money than Titantic...in fact Titantic is #6! It's also behind The Ten Commandments!! You men are here, we do hear you! We also know you suck and so do your games. Might wanna work on that first...yeah. and btw....The sims....Yeah...Mario sold more and guys like that and Pokemon sold more and guys like that....and GTA is gonna pass you and yep...you guessed it..GUY LIKE IT! Mario and Pokemon are the highest and guys by them in droves. Hey EA...we are still here you know!!! And fyi, my sister hates the Wii and wants a PS3! Pink games suck and won't sell.

Why fragment their potential customer base by catering to only specific demographics? As stated above, just concentrate on making (and this is something EA should really take to heart) great games and they will sell. And the last thing we need are more Titanics or more Sims. Yuck.

The Sims... I am sickened. What a horrible example to bring up. That is the most "pink" game I've ever heard of Mrs. Knight. I've never met a single male who would even admit to playing that trash. Who wants to go through all the heck of real life, only to then go home and do it all again in a game? Uh oh, my sim was late to work and was fired. How exciting! Now his wife has left him and taken the kids. Huzzah. *spit* I can't think of a single aspect of that game that could appeal to me or any of my male friends. We don't care about clothing selections, virtual house building, or emulating the misery of reality. None of those gameplay elements resonate with us. On another note though, I find Mrs. Knight's comments about the wii amusing. She thinks it is great because it doesn't "require the same investment to learn and to master how to pick up and play [as other consoles' games]," and I hope she is hopelessly wrong. A Wii game should require skill and have easy to use but hard to master game systems. Or, at the very least, such systems should be in a good wii game that pushes the system. One where the remote's motion sensors are used properly in a complex yet functional fashion. It should take some effort to learn all the nuances. If things are easy to learn AND master, something is off. Then again, I like a challenge. I like having to work to learn what combos to use with which enemies, what to save my magical energy for, how to angle my grenade throw to ricochet it into the enemy camp, and so on. Edit addition: Jeezy petes, what is up with the comment feature. Paragraph breaks disappear so readily. ugh.

My fiancee is a Guitar Hero 2 addict... she also loves Sid Meier's Pirates, Trauma Center, Fable and the Final Fantasy Series. You don't have to make "Desperate Housewives: The Game", you just need to make stuff that doesn't suck. THAT is what EA hasn't figured out yet. What's more, is that you have to show that this isn't a medium just for young boys, or twenty somethings like myself who just happen to vehemently refuse to grow up. You have to get the controller in their hand.

I think it depends on the girl. I've seen some girls only play games like The Sims or Hotshot Golf. while I've seen others get down with Splinter Cell, Devil May Cry, and Gran Turismo. Like it or not guys, those girls are picking up the joystick too..(and I'm not talking about the one in ur pants either! lol)

I reckon more Girl Gamers need to be out there, it's hard to find one with an interest in video games. Back in the day, my mum would only play Sonic for the Mega Drive (Genesis) so I would like it if she started playing some of my 360 games, it would be funny to watch.

Many of the girls and women I know play exactly the same kinds of games I do. The only thing I see that men like notably more than women are RTS/Strategy games like C&C or Civ. Everything else seems just as liked by women as men.
