EA Will Give Star Wars: Battlefront a Battlefield-Sized Push

Expect to hear more about the upcoming DICE-developed game in the coming months, EA CFO says.

During this week's Electronic Arts earnings call, CFO Blake Jorgensen talked more about the upcoming Star Wars: Battlefront game, which is in development at Battlefield series studio DICE.

Jorgensen confirmed that the shooter is due to launch before Christmas 2015. More specifically, the game aims to be "aligned with" Star Wars Episode VII -- The Force Awakens, which arrives on December 18, he said.

DICE's new Star Wars: Battlefront is not directly based on the upcoming movie from J.J. Abrams, though it will share some general universe themes, characters, and items. In previous teaser trailers and images, DICE has revealed that the game will take players to locations such as Hoth and Endor, and feature vehicles such as AT-ATs and speeder bikes, among other things.

About the game in general, Jorgensen said DICE will share more about the project in the coming months. He went on to say that Battlefront's launch this year will be a "very large activity" for EA overall, on level with the company's blockbuster Battlefield series.

"We're extremely excited about that," Jorgensen said about Battlefront. "We think there's huge potential for that title. More to come in the next couple of months on that as more about the movie comes out as well as more about our title comes out. You should consider that a very large activity for us [this year] and a very large focus--similar to how we've thought about Battlefields in the past."

Battlefront is not the only new Star Wars game EA is currently working on. The developer's Visceral Games studio is also producing an entry in the series, rumored to be an open-world game. EA has even hired longtime Naughty Dog creative director Amy Hennig to work on the title.

EA and Star Wars franchise owner Disney signed a ten-year, multi-title deal in 2013 that makes the Mass Effect publisher the exclusive creator of new Star Wars games.

Sounds like their "big push" will likely end up in another buggy BF release to me. Rushing development to coincide with the movie release == gonna need a month's worth of patches to play well.

The one thing we should all do? Not pre-order it.

"We’re building the game that we as fans want to play." For the sake of this game, I hope they prefer the gameplay of the original Battlefronts over that of the Battlefields. Otherwise I'm not going to have high hopes for how this game turns out, which are already somewhat low seeing that EA has their hands on it.

It is going to suck then just like Battlefield 4 and the £60 paid DLC Hardline?

Avatar image for armataan

<< LINK REMOVED >> I am curious what exactly Battlefield Hardline would have to be to justify not being called a 'DLC' in your eyes? Because the game is -radically different- from Battlefield 4, and is taking a long time to fine-tune.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> I wouldn't usually bother answering back but you are genuinely asking the question, so here it goes:

1. Graphic looks exactly the same and the engine used is the same, not changed at all despite the fact that they say it has.

2. Checkout Bad Company 2 and the Vietnam expansion, now compare it to battlefield 4 and Hardline. In my opinion that was still better, yet it was dlc/expansion!

3. They had this game ready when Battlefield 4 was putting out DLCs (the last two). This game was nothing but another DLC.

4. They could still call this a full game but price it at £9.99 and I wouldn't mind.

5. There are at least a few more reasons I can think of but you get the picture.

EA destroyed DICE and now is looking forward to milk its fans. I used to love Battlefield series and been playing it since the first one. I purchased BF3 and BF4 on both PC and console as well as the premium for both (that's how loyal I was). It has got to a point now that I truly dislike it and would never ever spend a single dime on it.

I'm still hesitant to preorder this simply because of how DICE/EA botched the release of BF4 on the PS4. I refuse to spend $60+ on a broken game that won't work for 6 months. They need to find a way to reassure gamers that this isn't going to happen with this game and actually deliver on it. I'm still pissed off at what happened with BF4 on PS4 to this day. It might be fixed now, but I've moved on to games that actually work long ago and haven't looked back.

Please DICE/EA, DO NOT RELEASE A BROKEN P.O.S. AGAIN!!!

Associating the Battlefield name doesn't exactly instil a sense of faith for consumers. The Frostbite engine looks like a cheap knock-off of the Cryengine to me. Will be waiting a long time after the player feedback comes out before considering buying this game.

If this game is any of the following, I am finished with EA.

1. Released in a broken state

2. Has no local multiplayer (specifically, splitscreen)

3. Is full of pay-to-win elements

4. Has a crappy campaign (which I define as being short and/or very linear like Battlefield/Call of Duty)

4. Lacks content in the base game and pushes DLC on players.

<< LINK REMOVED >> then i guess you should be done with almost every publisher going by that list. all kidding aside, How many games like this lately have a split screen multiplayer? if you havent noticed lately, the big thing is online, competitive, multiplayer. so i doubt very seriously this game will have what you want. I do however agree with #1. i would hope that they learned there lesson after the miserable launch of BF4

Avatar image for gamerboy100

You did miss 1b though, which is : Apologize for broken launch and give everyone who owned it prior to day X a complimentary game. I just went from 6 to midnight. But I think an EA push looks like: rushing it out before it's ready, having terrible in-game purchases, and releasing a Star Wars Battlefront 2016 next year with similar features and new bugs.

Trying to align the game is one of the worst possible to things to happen. The worst is turning the game into Star Wars: Battlefield Edition with 1st person only.

Avatar image for vibroknife

<< LINK REMOVED >> Why? I would actually prefer them do this instead of release it in say, February or October. Even if it is a bit rocky launch. Mostly because I'll be too shot up with euphoria this Winter from all this star wars stuff to care :D :D :D

Avatar image for R4gn4r0k

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> Because games and movies take totally different amounts of time to make. Rushing a game out so it can ride on the hype of the movie is a very, very bad idea.

Avatar image for theotherjeff

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> True, but when has EA ever let a bad idea stand in their way? Not looking to get it until it's, at least, been patched to a playable level and is a known quantity; I say known quantity because I'd be surprised if they don't embargo the reviews in order to prevent spoilers for the movie.

Another Origin-only game I'd like to play. Slowly, but faster than I can reduce my backlog, the list of really-want-to-play games that requires Origin increases and thus my reluctance against installing it decreases. Steam has been my only DRM/store thingy for almost 9 years now (I celebrate the anniversay Feb 4th), but that might change in the near future. Even though I don't particularly like EA and Origin even less so, I'd like them to make more good Star Wars games.

Avatar image for Kunakai
Kunakai

<< LINK REMOVED >> I still don't understand many peoples preference for Steam over Origin. I hate them both for the most part since they add barriers to launching games but I sure as hell wouldn't let a small prerequisite app keep me from playing games I enjoy.

Avatar image for Hurvl
Hurvl

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> My backlog is so big that I don't feel it necessary or desirable in any way to add another app through which I can increase it. Also, I got Steam almost exactly 9 years ago, before I really knew what it was and what it would lead to. Steam has been good to me, but I prefer GoG when they both have the same games and I don't want to install another DRM system. One is enough.

Great. So this means they are going to rush it out whether it is finished or not just to hit that deadline when the movie releases.

Please don't mess this up DICE.
