According to figures released today by NPD, Electronic Arts had the competition running scared during the month preceding Halloween. Thanks to its ever-popular sports franchises, EA had four of the 10 top selling games of October. The PlayStation 2 version of its NBA Live 2004 took the top slot, with the Xbox edition of the game coming in ninth. Madden NFL 2004, September's number one title, continued to be a winner for the studio; its PS2 edition came in third. Another PS2 title, Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2004, rounded out EA's releases at number eight. Two other sports titles--Activision's Tony Hawk's Underground and THQ's WWE Smackdown! Here Comes The Pain--also ranked among October's top games.

Those predicting the GameCube's doom might be surprised to see two of the Nintendo console titles (compared to just one for the Xbox) break into the top 10. LucasArts' Star Wars Rogue Squadron III: Rebel Strike swooped into seventh place, while Capcom's Viewtiful Joe was tail-end Charlie at number 10. Nintendo also scored with Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros. 3 for the Game Boy Advance, which finished fourth.

With six of the top ten titles being played on the PS2, Sony had reason to smile. SCEA's Jak II provided the icing on its cake by coming in at second place.
