EA: The future is connected, mobile, digital

Electronic Arts COO Peter Moore outlines what he believes will drive the industry forward, discusses company's shift to becoming an Internet company.

Battlefield and Mass Effect publisher Electronic Arts' COO, Peter Moore, has outlined his view of what the future of the game industry is going to be all about.

No Caption Provided

"It's about connected, it's about mobile, and it's about digital," Moore told FOX Business. "And I love my roots in Sega. I certainly love my roots in Microsoft. I think at Electronic Arts we bring it all together."

Moore said EA remains a "powerhouse" in the core packaged-goods business. However, he pointed out that the company's $1.7 billion in digital revenue for the past 12 months shows that change is brewing.

"We are moving towards being really an Internet company that provides game experiences for gamers around the world," Moore said.

Also in the interview, Moore addressed the impending arrival of the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 and what the next-generation consoles will mean for EA's bottom line.

He said the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 platforms would remain the "core" of the company's business this fiscal year, noting that it won't be until fiscal 2015 that the new platforms play a meaningful role in the publisher's earnings.

The PlayStation 4 launches on November 15, while the Xbox One comes to market on November 22.

I really hope EA can recapture the magic they had near the start of the previous gen. It was great because at this time they were actually one of the more innovative companies in the industry. Games like Skate, Mirrors Edge, Dead Space, and Brutal Legend to name a few. Even their sport titles like NHL and FIFA did great things throughout the gen. Granted they were always doing underhanded things but for a time it felt like there was more good then bad to go around.

Plus playing off the hard drive makes the load times less. When we move to solid state drives, the games will be so much faster. except for the people that play games off dvds..they will be alot slower.

Of course he wants digital, it's more profitable for him. All he has to do is convince us it's 'the future' and 'better for us'. Seems to be working on most.

Let's compare console prices of physical and digital console games shall we:

Max Payne 3: $39.99 Live, $39.99 PSN, $14.99 physical on Amazon

Red Dead Redemption: $29.99 on Live and PSN, $14.99 physical (the goty edition is even less than the vanilla digital)

Bioshock Infinite: $39.99 on Live and PSN, physical $27.49 on Amazon for PS3 and $32.49 on 360

Far Cry 3: $39.99 on Live and PSN, physical $29.99

More expensive games sounds like a future I don't want. Ridiculous part is that digital is supposed to be saving them on distribution costs and the games are more expensive, sometimes 50% times more expensive. Ridiculous. This is one of the major reasons why I do not want consoles to go pure digital. You want to get them digital by all means do it, but trying to shove us who want physical out is utter bullshit.

Here are the links to see for yourself. Just search the game and compare prices for yourself.

Live: http://www.xbox.com/en-US/?xr=mebarnav

SEN (PSN): https://store.sonyentertainmentnetwork.com/#!/en-us/home/main

Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/ref=ap_frn_logo

@acerx7 I think consoles are starting to catch on. Granted they're not there yet but with XBox Live I've been pleasantly surprised by some of the discounts they've offered on digital copies of games. Recently I bought Silent Hill Downpour among others for $10. That same game is $39 for a physical copy on Amazon.

Heck as a member of PSPlus I've gotten Battlefield 3, Sleeping Dogs, Resident Evil 5, and Infamous for free. Granted I already owned BF3 and SDogs for PC but the point is I think Sony and Microsoft are at least warming up to the same strategies that has made Steam a run away success.

Yup, with digital, there's only one place to buy your games (and it's likely gonna stay that way for a while). Guess what's gonna happen?

I can't remember the last time I bought a game on a disc.

However, my game purchases have been mostly Steam sales, where I can get the game for a lot cheaper then retail.

That the way I think digital should be, cheaper then retail, since they're not paying for the cost of putting it on the disc and shipping it.

@starduke exactly what I think too... if it's digital it should cost a lot less and that's why I look-out for sales on Steam. paying 50EUR for a digital copy on steam just sounds like robbery to me... publishers should know that we see through their bullshit

@starduke That's not the reason why it should be cheaper. These costs are minimal. They "lose" a lot of money by having to give some of the money to the retailers.

Right now EA gets only half of the money from a 60$ game. The rest goes to the console manufactury, the retailers and somewhere else.
That's also the reason why there is so much DLC around. Publishers get that DLC money directly.

If the gaming world really does go digital, publishers will get so much more oney and we will still have to deal with DLC. And will it lead to better games, because the industry will have more money?
Hell no, because the guys, who have the money don't give a damn about games. You'll still get bad games and pay 100$ for them, because you don't know any better.

That's all fine to me EA, but just before you cross the tipping point and go all 'George Lucas-y' and shit, just sell off your most treasured IP to a publisher who won't slobber all over it, ok?

Thanks, you can go ahead and foam at the mouth now :)

Wow. So very many people hate this company. Is EA ever going to go into damage-control mode? How long can this company get away with this pedigree of disrespect? They are far too conceited.

I play games at home, not in a car. If I'm out, I'm doing something. Digital is ok, as long as it is cheap imo. I did play some free to play games by ea, but they didn't get a penny out of me for those games. (thanks by the way ea) And connected, ok now and then, but often spoiled by sore loser, trolls and others, plus I want to pick up a game and play for a few I don't go online just to drop out of a game.

The future is an old and bitter man running EA into the ground. Too bad he will destroy some once good development studios in the process. At least the actual skilled and creative employees will find new jobs with new development studios that fill in the void. EA's death will mean new life for the game industry. Can't happen soon enough!

Also I am not so sure about the digital part. I have been digital for more than a year and I am slowly actually going back to purchasing discs again. Why? 1. Disc based games are now cheaper than digital in my area 2. I can play instantly instead of waiting for a massive download from non dedicated servers 3. I can lend the disc to my friend if he/she wants to try it out 4. I can sell it if I want to 5. I can play it on any device I want as long as it is same format....list goes on

Furthermore the future might be connected, but that is ONLY because the users are left out with no other choice, the publishers FORCE this upon the players.

Me in the past: **** YOU, EA! **** YOU!
Me now: **** YOU, EA! **** YOU!
Me in the future: **** YOU, EA! **** YOU!

Maybe I wouldn't even mind digital games, if they were less expensive, just the way they're supposed to be, but at the moment, they're even more expensive here and there.
On top of that they would most likely eliminate used game sales, if everything went digital. Good for them. But would they take away the DLC money milking cash cow bad business practices? **** no, they would continue to pull that BS off.

Why in hells name should I ever look forward to a gaming future like that? I would rather quit gaming than support BS any further.

And with all that being said: **** YOU, EA! **** YOU!

I'm assuming one of the reasons they want to go all digital is to kill the used games market. People buy a boxed copy of their game used, then they buy the shitload of DLC that was released for it, which makes them money.

People buy everything digital, EA make money on one off sales only. What I'm saying here is EA, like all the 'let's go full digital' clowns really haven't thought this through at all. It amazes me people with such tiny IQ's can rise to prominent positions in videogames companies.

@blueinheaven no they are looking at all the money made off games for phones and facebook. That's fine if that is who they want their customer base to be, just hope someone keeps making games for people who like games and not just looking for something to do at school or work other than school or work.

I would have loved to hear more of his view. I suspect he is unfocussed. "Internet" is a misnomer (subtle but true). They are an Entertainment company like Universal or Warner Brothers. Digital Distribution seems inevitable, but EA could stop it with its inane DRM requirements as "entertainment" can not invoke restrictions without consumers deciding to spend their entertainment budget elsewhere. imo of course ;-)

Ever since I've been on Steam (also have Origin), I've never looked back. It's been some years since I've bought a boxed game and I don't miss it (wasted space). I practically never use my DVD drive anymore, in fact I sometimes try it to see if it's still working. :)

@RadPro I like steam, but I still wont buy a new $60 game from them, but $5 for a few older games on sale, yeah, maybe even $20 for a newer game on sale, but always on sale. My cheap (poor) self will be looking for that copy of gta5, maybe in a couple three months I will have time to play a little.

@RadPro Yeah but many people like to be able to resell their stuff once it has no use, can't do that with digital copies. That's why I'm buying GTA5 at a store, I will finish it in a month or two and sell it for maybe half of what I paid, that's just being a smart consumer. Of course, companies like EA don't want you to do this, it's eats into their profits.
