Electronic Arts’ Online Services Updates page has added a long list of games that will lose online functionality come June 30.

Some of the notable games on the list include Battlefield 2 (PC), Battlefield 1942 (PC, Mac), Battlefield 2142 (PC, Mac), Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3 (PC, Mac), Crysis 2 (PC), Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit 2 (PC), Neverwinter Nights 2 (PC, Mac), and Star Wars: Battlefront II (PC and PlayStation 2).

According to EA, the games are losing online functionality on June 30, a full month after the GameSpy shutdown. Crytek, for example, already confirmed that both Crysis and Crysis 2 will go offline May 31.

“Since GameSpy’s announcement, our teams have been working to evaluate options to keep services up and running,” EA said on its website. “Unfortunately, due to technical challenges and concerns about the player experience, we do not have a solution at this time. Online services for EA games on the GameSpy platform will be closed down at the end of June.

“We know some of these games are still fan favorites, including Battlefield 2, Battlefield 1942, Medal of Honor: Allied Assault and Command & Conquer games. We are still investigating community-supported options to preserve online functionality for these titles, such as multiplayer. Significant technical hurdles remain, and at this time we don’t have anything to announce.”

EA’s official Origin Twitter account also previously said that it was working on transitioning Battlefield 2, Battlefield 2142, and Battlefield Bad Company 2 to a different solution, but that there were still hurdles ahead. Bad Company 2 is not on the list of games losing online services.

Other companies affected by the May 31 GameSpy shutdown, like 2K and Rockstar, have said which games they’re transitioning to a different solution and which will go offline. Some games, like Halo: Combat Evolved for the PC, Star Wars: Battlefront II, and Battlefield 1942 will live on thanks to GameRanger, which allows gamers to host their own servers for a wide range of computer games, including some being affected by the GameSpy shutdown.

Here’s the full list of EA games losing Online Services on June 30:

This is the same company that wants to make EVERY game online-only, whether or not the game actually needs online at all.

"Gamers will learn to love always-online gaming"

- John Riccitiell (former CEO of EA)

So please good people, stop supporting a company that won the "worst company in America" award twice and stop literally buying into a system that results in b.s like this. There's really a whole host of reasons, for MP/SP gamers alike NOT to support only only (in short it boils down to them having complete control over your purchase, also see below post) and even for non-gamers looking at the bigger picture. But if you really gotta play one of EA's games, I invite you to buy it second-hand (or what the hell, pirate it), so no money goes to EA at all. The problem certainly wont go away if we keep funding it,

With internet speeds how they are today, even the most mediocre-est of PCs could host a private server for these games if EA would allow them.

Problem with this is is that EA is a greedy company, they don't do anything without a monetary motive in sight. So if they do eventually try and offer support for hosting your own server you can bet you'll probably have to buy the files as DLC or something.

Maybe EA should stop releasing games with MP so they wont have to close them all the time. Its like every year they close whole load of games. Dont care for most of them, but still some of those games are not even so old.

For gods sake EA if you are going to do something like this then at least give us the server files for all the games. Don't just leave us in the dark.

Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat?!?!?!? BF2 with mods is still HUGE online...

I mean... Project reality has probably the best online experience I've ever experienced. It's the only game in which people actually know what teamplay and maturity mean...

So they put the BF:2 box set on sale just before this happens. I haven't really been following the train of hate that is following EA every step but this kinda makes me want to join it. They had to have known, right?

Some people here are really unreasonable ATM I think. Read the article properly. For once this is not the fault of EA; they are even looking into ways to recover the multiplayer feature of some of the games - which might mean reprogramming and patching old games, quite a huge task if they go through with it. So for those hating on EA, chill out and try to be a bit more constructive...

Gotta admit though, I'm consistently surprised by these lists and the games that are actually still supported.

Honestly, not surprised.

This is EXACTLY why games these days SHOULD NOT focus mainly on their online modes. People buy Battlefield, Call Of Duty and others mainly or only for their online multiplayer. If the other modes are crappy then what does that leave there? Imagine EA cutting Titanfall's online.....There would be no game left at all.

Ah but what do they care? They already have our money.
