Electronic Arts’ Online Services Updates page has added a long list of games that will lose online functionality come June 30.

Some of the notable games on the list include Battlefield 2 (PC), Battlefield 1942 (PC, Mac), Battlefield 2142 (PC, Mac), Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3 (PC, Mac), Crysis 2 (PC), Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit 2 (PC), Neverwinter Nights 2 (PC, Mac), and Star Wars: Battlefront II (PC and PlayStation 2).

According to EA, the games are losing online functionality on June 30, a full month after the GameSpy shutdown. Crytek, for example, already confirmed that both Crysis and Crysis 2 will go offline May 31.

“Since GameSpy’s announcement, our teams have been working to evaluate options to keep services up and running,” EA said on its website. “Unfortunately, due to technical challenges and concerns about the player experience, we do not have a solution at this time. Online services for EA games on the GameSpy platform will be closed down at the end of June.

“We know some of these games are still fan favorites, including Battlefield 2, Battlefield 1942, Medal of Honor: Allied Assault and Command & Conquer games. We are still investigating community-supported options to preserve online functionality for these titles, such as multiplayer. Significant technical hurdles remain, and at this time we don’t have anything to announce.”

EA’s official Origin Twitter account also previously said that it was working on transitioning Battlefield 2, Battlefield 2142, and Battlefield Bad Company 2 to a different solution, but that there were still hurdles ahead. Bad Company 2 is not on the list of games losing online services.

Other companies affected by the May 31 GameSpy shutdown, like 2K and Rockstar, have said which games they’re transitioning to a different solution and which will go offline. Some games, like Halo: Combat Evolved for the PC, Star Wars: Battlefront II, and Battlefield 1942 will live on thanks to GameRanger, which allows gamers to host their own servers for a wide range of computer games, including some being affected by the GameSpy shutdown.

Here’s the full list of EA games losing Online Services on June 30:

<< LINK REMOVED >> - Did you read the article?

The GameSpy service is shutting down, and each of those games integrated GameSpy technology, not just for server listing, but also for stat tracking including leader boards, etc. EA is not the only publisher affected by this move, because GameSpy was used in literally hundreds of games across dozens of publishers over the last decade.

This is why I get nervous about mandatory online games. I'm gonna go postal if Steam pulls this crap with my Total War games.

I hate EA but this hasn't sparked off an Anti-EA rant, so it can't be very bad.

All old games for the most part, and not just old but games that have multiple better sequels / alternatives.

tbh this is kinda worrying if you ask me, when did gaming become time limited. now i know the servers would have better uses on new games and such but i don't want games to become half of what they were by removing online. the thing is if online only games become popular then your essentially buying a game that after 10 years will simply not function. titanfall would be a good example if in 2024 you can't play that game, ok 90% of people probably wont care but there will be some that do.

star wars battlefront 1 and 2? lmao. some of these games are old as freak. yall should be thanking EA for keeping the online on for old ass games. battlefield 2 has been out for almost 10 years. it has had a good run. time for me to play some bf2 on pc before uninstalling it.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >>Yet CS 1.6 still has servers running. Just because the game isn't a trend right now, doesn't mean no one ever plays it. Don't you remember the May the 4th promotion? Battlefront II was among the sales, i'm betting a lot of people did bought. What's even more, a lot of those games had their online portion of the game as a selling point.

So no, this isn't a "EA hate train", this is an actual reaction when a company denies something you bought for.

No worries, Tunngle, Hamachi and Garena has us covered. C&C tho is best played in local LAN, we still do that around here.

That right there tells you everything you need to know about the future of triple-A gaming. Focus on online multiplayer, half assed or no single-player, games requiring patches upon release, then pull the plug on those games in the future.

My money's going to independent and trusted developers (Rockstar, Nintendo) from now on.

This is what happens when you buy a game which relys on an external service for multiplayer and doesn't allow you to host your own server to which prople can join directly, without the need of a externally hosted "lobby" service.

This is also the very exact same reason why you should just stay far, far away from "cloud gaming" which is proclaimed to be "the future of gaming" in the eyes of big publishers - of course, because it will render the game you bought useless (even singleplayer) whenever they decide the time is up and increment the version number to sell it as a new one again.

Thankfully inofficial community patches can save some of the games in the list above and continue to make them playable online, but this should be a given in the first place if 'AAA' publishers weren't so greedy.

<< LINK REMOVED >> These games are 4+ years old, and many have newer versions out. This isn't really a downside. It's rare that a game is still popular 4+ years after its release.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Doesn't really matter that they are "old games", does it ?

Crysis 1 still has a pretty active community and is about 7 years old - the mod community has taken over multiplayer matchmaking to some extent and are running their own servers to keep PowerStruggle and other gameplay modes alive but if I remember correctly it also allowed direct IP joins (could be wrong on this one).

Battlefield 2 still has a very active community, especially with the 'Project Reality' mod which is about 8 years old - the mod community will be taking over the master server hosting to keep it playable.

Neverwinter Nights 1 still has a very active community and it is about 11 years old - it has LAN mode and allows direct IP joins so it isn't really affected anyways.

Since Battlefield 4 is pretty FUBAR, I'd rather keep playing Battlefield 2 instead and similarly Crysis 1 was more enjoyable than the newer ones - newer isn't always better.

A game is more likely to be bought (by me) if it offers longevity and doesn't require external sources in order to function, therefore developers that do understand this are pretty much guaranteed to get my money (if the game is good).

Online only games are fun because of other players. 5 years down the road most online only games are being played by people who are way to good at the game for any fun for other players. Don't miss out on some of the greatest moments in gaming just because the server might shut down someday.

Well good because I have a few of these games, and now I will be able to get refunds. I bought these games with the intent to be able to play online and now that they are taking these offline means false advertising and grounds for refunding. So I guess its a win-lose situation. They are probably doing this so they can move in the new pay-to win and pay-to-play ways, they know that servers are a luxury and we should have to pay for this also along with the game, and this is why the console gaming industry will fail and free to play games will take over

And this ladies and gentlemen, is the biggest reason why current gaming sucks. If you don't buy their games brand new, day one, you'll have to pay for an online code just to play multiplayer before they inevitably shut it down 2 years later anyway.

2/3rds of those are PC games. Besides Bulletstorm for PS3, you don't see the console versions of those going down. Lol I'm sure the master race will have excuses.

It's funny reading comments of ppl crying why there are no Xbox games on the list. Stupid haters ;)
