Electronic Arts’ Online Services Updates page has added a long list of games that will lose online functionality come June 30.

Some of the notable games on the list include Battlefield 2 (PC), Battlefield 1942 (PC, Mac), Battlefield 2142 (PC, Mac), Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3 (PC, Mac), Crysis 2 (PC), Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit 2 (PC), Neverwinter Nights 2 (PC, Mac), and Star Wars: Battlefront II (PC and PlayStation 2).

According to EA, the games are losing online functionality on June 30, a full month after the GameSpy shutdown. Crytek, for example, already confirmed that both Crysis and Crysis 2 will go offline May 31.

“Since GameSpy’s announcement, our teams have been working to evaluate options to keep services up and running,” EA said on its website. “Unfortunately, due to technical challenges and concerns about the player experience, we do not have a solution at this time. Online services for EA games on the GameSpy platform will be closed down at the end of June.

“We know some of these games are still fan favorites, including Battlefield 2, Battlefield 1942, Medal of Honor: Allied Assault and Command & Conquer games. We are still investigating community-supported options to preserve online functionality for these titles, such as multiplayer. Significant technical hurdles remain, and at this time we don’t have anything to announce.”

EA’s official Origin Twitter account also previously said that it was working on transitioning Battlefield 2, Battlefield 2142, and Battlefield Bad Company 2 to a different solution, but that there were still hurdles ahead. Bad Company 2 is not on the list of games losing online services.

Other companies affected by the May 31 GameSpy shutdown, like 2K and Rockstar, have said which games they’re transitioning to a different solution and which will go offline. Some games, like Halo: Combat Evolved for the PC, Star Wars: Battlefront II, and Battlefield 1942 will live on thanks to GameRanger, which allows gamers to host their own servers for a wide range of computer games, including some being affected by the GameSpy shutdown.

Here’s the full list of EA games losing Online Services on June 30:

Considering I own 16 of those games and my friends like to play RA3, that kind of enrages me. I guess we'll have to mcguyver it using hamachi somehow.

I remember when PC gamers were using Battlefield as an example to put down console gamers after the Gamespy shut down. Why can't everyone just respect each other's platform?

WTF? Why would they take down Battlefront 2? That game to this day still has a ton of people playing online, I understand shutting down servers for games no one plays, but seriously, at least keep them up until the new game releases next year.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> As far as I know, Steam doesn't have a multiplayer online infraestructure; just a community, updates and minimal matchmaking service (which P2P games like Dark Souls can take advantage of without setting up large servers). Setting up servers for games is entirely up to the developer.

Correct me if I'm wrong :)

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> Steam does offer an online infrastructure (Dark Souls 2 uses it, plus all the Valve games use it- just as an example) but EA isn't going to invest in porting it and Valve isn't going to go easy on EA because they don't (rightfully possibly) seem to like each other so I suppose it would be complicated for EA to move over to that when the game wasn't built originally to use it.

EA doesn't want to spend any money moving these games to another online infrastructure so basically unless there is a fan option (ergo, an option they don't have to put resources into) then these games won't be online anymore.

Fans will probably come up with something, though.

This is why LAN and direct IP connecting are still important multiplayer options for any game with internet capabilities.

Never got into online gaming, I'm glad now considering there's a good chance you'll get shafted if you're hooked on something. I wonder when Titanfall gets it's plug pulled. This is only a small taste of what gamers can expect in the future now that you have all taught the developers that you prefer online gaming over single player experiences. Good luck with that.

Its no secret that Microsoft is best mates with EA and its no secret Microsoft want everyone to rely on cloud servers to run even single player games, so it doesn't take a genius to figure out what owning an xbox one will like.

You pay full price for a multiplayer only game, spend hundreds of pounds on micro transactions to make the game playable, then they take the game offline, money and your game gone !

You pay full price for a single player game which needs the cloud to run properly on the xbox one, spend hundreds of pounds on micro transactions to make the game playable, then they take the game offline, money and your game gone !

Do not support this odious remote server (cloud) business model, Don't buy games from publishers like EA and don't buy an xbox one, the cloud is not the future is only a tool they will use to force you to part with more money !

<< LINK REMOVED >> I would be behind you on this but these games are almost a decade old. If you haven't gotten your 40$-60$ (or less if you bought it after 5 or so years of it being out) by now then you have a strange sense of entitlement.

Also you can still play these games offline as well as on fan servers so at this point your just raving conspiracy theories. You know, the kind that makes you look silly.

I do agree with your contempt of their online services, though. You are right in that they have dubious ideas with it, but I don't think this particular case is a good example of things like that. If you spend several hundred bucks on a game and it gets shut down 10 or so years later I think you still got your moneys worth.

And I bought the game I didn't rent it that wasn't in the advertising, if it was I wouldn't have "bought" it….. sorry "rented" it. Im not into renting games because ultimately they cost many times more, than what they are actually worth and your at the mercy of corporations, who have demonstrated time and time again they have no respect for their customers !

@de-astroturfer @cornbredx You should probably read those terms and service you agree to. Also apparently no one reads EULAs anymore. When you buy a game, you buy the privilege of playing the game.

Xbox one JUST came out. You know how old the games on this list are? The absolute most recent one's are like, 4 years old, and they're sports games, and most of the people who play those buy them either every year or every other year.

Battlefield 2 is almost 10 years old. You really think a whole lot of people will care about Titanfall in 10 years, when Titanfall 3 or 4 will be out by then?

As for the single player games, do research before spewing out 'facts'. No single player game needs the cloud to run properly unless you're talking about a streaming game service (onlive, ps now, etc.).

<< LINK REMOVED >> Let me make this clear ! No they don't currently use the cloud because the cloud isn't fully up and running yet, but all we've heard from Microsoft in response to the 720p debacle is that the cloud will be used in future to increase the performance of these games. and when that support is switched off i.e. when a sequel arrives, you will effectively loose those games.

We can sit around and pretend that what is now will always be, but that would be a lie because Microsoft has already proclaimed it to be the future !

@de-astroturfer @cornbredx @Daveof89 Let me make this clear, because apparently I didn't with my first post...

XBOX ONE LOCAL GAMEPLAY DOESN'T REQUIRE INTERNET.

You keep saying "oh, the single player games require cloud". No, that's a load of crap. Can they be enhanced with the cloud? Possibly, but on all the single player games thus far, the cloud usage is primarily for game saves, which you could also put on your console if so desired.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> well I think we had our wires crossed a bit, because thats precisely my point obviously some companies with limited resources can't be expected to host a game forever, but now these companies are baking redundancy into games with online only and in the case of Microsoft online only cloud dependant single player games. also it isn't as easy to get third party server support on consoles as it is on PC and I would bet EA and the like will make it impossible in the future.

So, in essence, you've lost nothing.

I am with you on other games where there is no other options (Titanfall above is a good example of that), but I don't buy those games and that is one of the reasons.

It would be nice if people had just a bit more foresight. What happens 10 years from now if you just want to fire up Titanfall for nostalgia?...will it work?

I was saying elsewhere that two weekends ago, I load up the PS1, PS2 and Sega Saturn to show my son some older games. This won't be possible with games like Titanfall.

Destiny's single player is online only because that's how the game is visioned. That's fine and all, but that is another game that will go belly up one day.

Of course, we'll have Destiny 3 by then, so no one will care...right?
