EA Sports subscription service planned?

Leaked document appears to indicate publishing label will be offering premium tier that will offer exclusive DLC, discounts, early access via downloadable titles.

Source: Sports blog Pasta Padre.

What we heard: Earlier this month, EA Sports president Peter Moore used his MI6 2011 keynote address to reveal that Electronic Arts is planning to create cross-platform, cross-game profiles for its sports titles. Now, according to a report on Pasta Padre, the publisher is going one step further. The sports blog is claiming to have received a document outlining EA Sports' plan to offer an annual subscription that will offer various perks to participants.

Is EA Sports getting ready to offer a premium subscription package for $15-$35?
Is EA Sports getting ready to offer a premium subscription package for $15-$35?

According to the document, the subscription will offer benefits for the Madden NFL, FIFA, NHL, Tiger Woods PGA Tour, NCAA Football, and SSX series. The memo is also accompanied by the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 logos, indicating that the program may be limited to those two platforms. Among the listed benefits of the subscription are:

--Discounts on all downloadable content for participating EA Sports console-based titles.
--Free and exclusive EA Sports downloadable content for console-based titles.
--Full downloadable versions of participating titles before they come out in stores.
--An exclusive "recognition badge" that will appear both in-game and on players' Web profiles.
--The ability to transfer paid content from current titles to future versions of said titles.
--Free and exclusive opportunities to extend players' EA Sports experience to the PC and Web.

The leaked memo also said that the subscription has not yet been priced. However, Pasta Padre reports that surveys are circulating that put potential prices in a range of $15 to $35, depending on how many of the options a person wants. The surveys also say that downloadable versions of games will be available to subscribers up to a full week before they arrive in stores.

The official story: As of press time, EA Sports reps had not responded to requests for comment.

Bogus or not bogus?: Looking not bogus that EA Sports is considering an annual subscription. Pasta Padre's record is fairly reliable, and Moore's talk of a unified cross-platform and cross-game experience jibes with an EA Sports-wide subscription service.

However, if an EA Sports subscription service sounds familiar, that's because rumors of a "season pass" for the label surfaced in late 2008. That scheme, which was also outed by a leaked survey, was going to offer subscribers 22-33 percent off of selected titles. And as is now known, that plan never came to fruition.

I bought Fight Night - my first EA Game in years. No damage or blood in online fights. You can pay to gain XP for your boxer, and they want me to enter my online PIN every time I turn on the game. They are so money hungry and are trying to nickel and dime people that already paid 60 bucks for a game.

I'm officially starting a moratorium for myself on all future DLC content from EA. I'm fed up with them and will not be rewarding them any longer with anymore of my nickles and dimes.

EA really needs to go to a clinic, this "lets get every bleeping dime outta people we can" addiction is getting serious. Not bougus since EA has pretty much had its lips clamped to the teets of DLC since day one, I shocked they dont make us pay a fee everytime we hear "ITS IN THE GAME".

This may become a domino effect for more 3rd party publishers to join on the subscription bandwagon, as if paying $60 per games without extra "meat on its bones", isn't enough. This is quite disturbing. If the bandwagon effect comes true, I'm quitting gaming altogether. I don't play EA sports games (last one was Madden 2005) and it may not affect me too much, but the domino effect is what I'm more concerned about.

Official Wording: "Discounts on all downloadable content." What it means: "Price hike on all content for non-subscribers versus the prices they had paid previously."

70 bucks per year for each "new" sports game, and they want to add a 35$ subscription? Knowing how greedy they are it'll probably end up as a monthly subscription as well. Anyways, if they reduce the price of their games by $30, It might start to look interesting. Anything else just looks like they are trying to milk their customers.

Pay for the game, pay for Xbox live, pay for EA subs. My country is very critized because monopoly of some companies, but you can see how they work seeing EA Sports: No competitors, I can do whatever I want to gamers. And you guys allow that! I expect to see future EAS Sports titles selling very well.

It's EA. It surprises me as much as another wow expansion or another call of duty game. I will not be supporting this move by them if they decide to go forward with this plan.

If this encompassed all of EA's titles, i.e. even their non-annual titles like Dead Space or Battlefield, I might have taken a second look; frankly as far as the sports games go, I only really care about SSX. =P

Pay for the same game every year and pay more a year to play things that should already be in the game, now add a subscription to that. Has EA gone completely money hungry. You quote on quote hardcore gamers better not support this if true. This definitely would lead others to pulling this crap.

I get tired of seeing this sort of stuff! We already pay about $60 for one EA game! Same with other games! Why make us feel like we are unworthy, just because we didn't get this so called "Premium Content?!" Stop milking people dry! Most of us don't have money to blow like that!

Please people, do not support this. Micro transactions will be the death of us all if we continue to let these corporate jerks nickel and dime us. Just think about it, they want us to pay extra for content that should be there in the first place. Vote with your wallet.

The only two ea sports franchises I've ever bought into are NHL and Fight Night. I don't know why people say they never change year to year, NHL 10 and NHL 11 were a lot different. Same with the Fight Night's.

God as if they didn't milk it dry by coming out with a new a game each year. This is not counting the stupid call of duty series which comes out with a DLC every other fricking quarter. As if they were not making enough money of us already.

Not to put any ideas in EA's corporate heads, but is the $15-$35 a year, or a month? I would guess that it's per year, but I wouldn't put it past EA to try and make it per month. Considering there are two games on that list that anyone in my family plays or would like to play, I don't see this being financially viable for me.

I wont pay, mostly because I am already paying 60 a year for Live, 23 a month for Gamefly and 10 for Netflix which may go away in place for Hulu Plus which is 8. TBH, I can't afford another fee. If gamers just don't pay, companies wont do it.

I would pay 15 bucks if they allowed me to buy one Madden and just keep the roster updates every year, it's not like they change the game year to year anyways.

Don't blame EA for this. They'll keep capitalizing on schmucks so long as they keep paying for it. I used to hate EA hardcore, but now I'm actually starting to hate the gamers that allowed this to happen.
