EA: SimCity offline mode 'didn't fit with our vision'

Maxis GM says developer recognizes some fans want offline mode, but even more are praising the game's always-on features.

Electronic Arts has admitted it could have created an offline option for SimCity, but developer Maxis ultimately chose not to so as to keep with the "vision" of the city-building game.

No Caption Provided

In a note to fans today titled "Straight Answers From Lucy," Maxis general manager Lucy Bradshaw explained that SimCity is an always evolving product, similar to a massively multiplayer online game.

"The game we launched is only the beginning for us--it's not final and it never will be. In many ways, we built an MMO," Bradshaw said.

"So, could we have built a subset offline mode? Yes," she added. "But we rejected that idea because it didn't fit with our vision. We did not focus on the 'single city in isolation' that we have delivered in past SimCities."

Bradshaw said Maxis understands that longtime fans of the SimCity series are upset the game does not accommodate offline play. But at the same time, she said positive responses to the game's always-connected features has been numerous.

"We recognize that there are fans--people who love the original SimCity--who want that," she said. "But we're also hearing from thousands of people who are playing across regions, trading, communicating and loving the always-connected functionality."

Earlier this week, an anonymous Maxis employee claimed SimCity's servers aren't handling the kind of computations the developer is suggesting and that an offline mode is possible. In addition, a modder this week found a way to play the game in an offline state.

EA and Maxis' decision to have SimCity require an always-on Internet connection has proved highly controversial since the game's hobbled release last week, with Maxis insisting that the online requirement is to enable social play.

Support companies that care about their customers like CD Projekt Red, not companies that shit on their customers like EA and Blizzard. I own The Witcher and The Witcher 2 and will be purchasing The Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk 2077 on principle alone.

@RoadStar1602 Heh, at this point, Activision is a saint compared to EA, I'm considering dropping the BF series and flipping over to CoD ust to avoid giving EA another cent.

@Daemoroth @RoadStar1602 Play a real FPS like TF2 or Counterstrike.

If it's on consoles, it's not a real FPS.

@Daemoroth @RoadStar1602 Activison a saint? That's a bit rich, to me Blizzard has done as poorly recently than any of this crap with Maxis. I see no difference in how these companies (Blizzard/EA) operate.

@Daemoroth I know, there was a bit of sarcasm there, but calling Activision saint needs to be called :D

What comes to D3 needing online connection, I don't think that is the case either. They have said the console vesrions come with offline-mode, so what's up with that?

@S4E @Daemoroth @RoadStar1602 Well, at least their games do actually have server-side computations, as opposed to claiming to do so and then revealing that it's just a check every 20 minutes that requires << LINK REMOVED >>.

Also, buying The Sims 3 complete would run me about $500... I can imagine the same to eventually be true for SimCity.

And finally, don't take my post too seriously, I thought calling Activision a saint would make that obvious? :)

@Daemoroth @RoadStar1602 CoD is announcing microtransaction updates for BO2 as well, and future CoD games.

@Daemoroth @Aleksa8 @RoadStar1602 No problem.
It worries me, because why would a best selling franchise NEED microtransactions when there are other games out there with microtransactions that are free to play, and are NOT pay to win?

This seems like a ploy to get into Paymium gaming. by the end of the year, the next CoD is likely going to have downloadable weapons. In fact, BO2 included some with a DLC, apparently. Pay to win may be coming soon, as well.

Well, tbh, I can live with COSMETIC microtransactions, I never buy them anyway. Will have to see what stunts they try to pull before I look at BO2, thanks for the heads-up!

Guys I have this totally crazy idea. I know it's absolutely off the wall and totally insane and you may think I'm a nut job for even suggesting it, but hear me out and have an open mind:

What if, instead making it so the new SimCity game required a constant internet connection, they made it so the new SimCity game didn't require a constant internet connection?!?!?!?

@advancedcaveman Weren't you listening? Too much engineering required! :P

PS - Though, I almost believe it, I mean, if your devs are so incredibly stupid that they don't include the already measured traffic density statistic in their PATHFINDING algorithm, tic-tac-toe would probably be a massive engineering challenge for them.

Well here's the details.

http://www.cinemablend.com/games/SimCity-Offline-Mode-Now-Available-General-Public-53739.html

Delete two lines of code and you too can play SimCity offline.

Now... if only there was a line of code we could add that would let Lucy Bradshaw know that we aren't five years old(though frankly I know some five year old's who could figure this out lol).

This is going to sound crass, but I have no sympathy for the people who bought this game. None. You knew what you were participating in when you bought it, you knew before its release that it had the always -on DRM requirement and you bought it anyway.

I love(d) Diablo and SimCity as a kid, but I bought neither SC4 or D3 on principle. Sadly, you who did buy these games are the reason they even exist to begin with. Youre the same people who would never bitch about cameras at intersections mailing tickets to drivers.

Stand for something once in your miserable lives, even something as worthless and unimportant as DRM. You dont think I want to play Anno 2070? SimCity 4? Diablo 3? I do, I really do, but I just cant do it.

@darkreign2424 I accept that, I honestly do. It was stupid of me to get it, yes, but don't confuse what we're ranting about:

It's NOT purely about the online-only component, if that was ALL and the game worked fine, then I would fully support you and I wouldn't be posting a single complaint.

It's about the LIES around it - we were told it was online-only because of all the complex computations being done server-side so that the simulation can be awesome. And if you had opened a gaming site in the past week you would notice that THAT was a blatant, bold-faced lie (And all the "engineering" they would require to allow offline play comes down to 2 lines of code...).

When caught out, they simply try to spin it into a different direction, adding more lies on top and basically insulting the intelligence of every fan who bought the game.

Top that off with probably the worst launch in the history of gaming (We're still waiting for the full launch - previously critical components have been disable and still are, so nobody is actually playing the full SimCity just yet).

Now that people are playing a bit more of the game, we've come to realise that we have also been lied to about the complexity of the simulation, pathfinding is horrendous, emergency responses are so f***ing stupid it's hilarious, RCI stats disregard just about everything, population numbers are fudged, the list goes on (Random sim allocation is not on the list, we were told about that beforehand).

PS - You have NO idea how close I was to getting Anno 2070 with the Steam sale, sadly, I refuse until they remove TAGES. Won't touch that s***, got Tropico instead.

@Daemoroth @darkreign2424 Have you tried Cities XL? I have looked into that one, and it does look rather interesting.

I don't know about this being the worst launch though, think about D3. It still hasn't got all the stuff promised to be at launch and it has been, what, nearly a year soon.

They also lied about stuff, like online-only has to be there and that it is impossible to remove. What happens then, they announce console versions, with offline-mode as standard. Way to go Blizzard.

I do agree on other things you said though, I'm gutted, because I really wanted to get this game, but also sort of relieved I didn't waste my money.

To me, what I've read and seen, this whole game is a huge mess. All the problems you mentioned, and the fact that the maps are extremely tiny, is not what SimCity is about.

It is supposed to be the ultimate city builder game, but you are limited to sort of, I don't know, few 200K people at most?

@Daemoroth @S4E @pwc2 Oh bloody hell, so that's what they meant by fake numbers, I thought fake numbers meant like millions and you got that 100-200K. That's just crap.

And yes, you are not the only one that finds the whole business with D3 appalling.

The fact alone that console versions come with offline is a f**king disgrace, when they said all along that offline-mode wasn't possible to have, because drop rates etc. were done/calculated on the server-side.

You know, I'm afraid those will change (drop rates) for consoles, so that you CAN actually get proper loot a la D2, shockingly, YOURSELF. Not using AH/RMAH.

So prepare to fume, "slightly" :D

...The only reason D3 pc version has to have that crap are the auction houses. That's all.

@S4E @pwc2 Solid points all-round, Blizzard has really lit the fires again with their console announcement (My brain has blocked that, I'll get a bloodclot thinking about that fiasco). Though I don't hold much hope for it anyway, the loot system was designed around the AH, and without access to the AH people will have to grind for weeks in order to get an upgrade (Unless they rework the loot for consoles, in which case *FUUUUMMMEEEEE!!!!*).

I haven't actually had a look at Cities XL, heard very polarising opinions of it, some love it, some hate it, but will check it out in a bit more detail, thanks!

Oh, and be warned, your 200k people in SimCity? Click on the population counter to see the stats, details tab, you'll notice that, in truth, it's only about 10% of that (Your total worker count) - 200k is a fake number... Unless of course 180k people are at home on welfare. :)

TL;DR

You knew what you were getting into so dont bitch about it. If the game flopped in sales, the first thing EA would do is patch a SP mode. Sadly, you lemmings with no patience to speak of validate their decisions. Sheeple.

@darkreign2424 I would imagine that most of the people here ranting about EA's sleezy business practices and outright lies, are people who didn't buy the game. It's not enough to just not buy it, people need to make noise about it also.

As a response to Sim City always on-line requirement, Gamespot was correct to give Sim City a low review score, the verdict is correct. I love you Gamespot.

@kwcarlson Yet Diablo 3 sold +3MM units, so who's to blame? the developers or the players? as long as there are people buying the games the developers will do whatever they want with their products (and us).

You don´t like always-online games? you don´t like DRMs? DLCs? DONT BUY THEM! Only you can teach a lesson to all these greedy developers.

I myself don´t buy DLCs, I don´t like the whole idea or philosophy of DLCs and Season Passes, I wait a couple of years untill they release a GOTY edition or similar with all DLC for just 30-40$, saving me a bunch of money.

@WolfGrey@kwcarlsonThe part that I love is the: "But we're also hearing from thousands of people who are playing across regions, trading, communicating and loving the always-connected functionality."

So using that logic, if 3 million people bought the game, 2,998,000 said they hated online mode and 2,000 said they loved it, they could in fact claim that thousands love it and by omission of how many don't they can still make it a true statement.

@Ghetto_ninja @WolfGrey @S4E @kwcarlson This might be true, but I don't think Activision was the reason really, that messed D3 up.

Blizzard had literally all the time in world to make D3 the best game ever. Years to be precise, but the end product just wasn't there. I guess that was Wilsons' fault though, I don't know if he had any connections to Activision?

What I'm trying to say is Blizzard didn't (have to) rush D3 out, they should have done a lot better job with it, instead it was the biggest let-down in recent history of gaming.

@WolfGrey @S4E @kwcarlson Why do you think Blizzard has teamed up with Sony now to bring D3 to Playstation consoles? They should have known better than to team up with a publisher known for money grubbing. Sony does of good job of giving its dev teams enough time and resources to release great games.

@WolfGrey I'm absolutely with you on this one.

Yes, EA has done some very questionable things, and yes I don't agree with quite a lot with what they do, but SC2 has to be one of the biggest FUs ever to a player.

I mean, come on, you only get that one lousy campaign with it.

Blizzard mutilated the game simply to milk money, not just to put out DLCs (like EA seems to have a habit of doing), but completely "new", full-priced games. And this is only to get people to buy, buy, buy.

Well, they can keep their "expansions" and future releases. Unless they make the game-of-all-games in future, I'm done with them permanently.

I would do the same with EA, but alas they are too involved with everything and its just not going to work.

@S4E @kwcarlson @WolfGrey Yup which is why i don't care to typically support EA or Blizzard anymore.

Blizzard has been consumed by their greed(i am sure activision helped with that). After Lich King on WoW they started catering to the masses and WoW became kiddy style/super casual friendly.

Sc2 released without all the campaigns so they can milk a lovely 180 dollars if not more from fans.

And then Diablo 3.Ya screw blizzard.

@kwcarlson @WolfGrey Blizzard had the same PR disaster with D3 as well.

It's like, do you actually have to have any qualifications, education, logic etc. to work in either of their PR departments? Any training for the staff in general? It seems to me that they just come out and spew a load of s**t and nobody inside the company does anything to prevent it or censor it in anyway. Nobody cares.

Is it that hard to say "We f***** up"? Honestly, we all know it wasn't your "vision", we all know it was a piracy thing. I get that they wanted multiple cities to work together, but isn't that the point of regions? Also, the fact that you can keep playing even though the servers are disconnected is just a big kick in the teeth, because it means the game is already able to run offline with little to no modification, what they should have put in a patch. And why the hell did they get rid of cheetah speed? It takes so much longer to make money and improve the city, now the fastest mode isn't very fast at all. You know what the consumers want without excuse now EA, whatever you decide to do with the game will make or break your reputation.
