EA: SimCity offline mode 'didn't fit with our vision'

Maxis GM says developer recognizes some fans want offline mode, but even more are praising the game's always-on features.

Electronic Arts has admitted it could have created an offline option for SimCity, but developer Maxis ultimately chose not to so as to keep with the "vision" of the city-building game.

No Caption Provided

In a note to fans today titled "Straight Answers From Lucy," Maxis general manager Lucy Bradshaw explained that SimCity is an always evolving product, similar to a massively multiplayer online game.

"The game we launched is only the beginning for us--it's not final and it never will be. In many ways, we built an MMO," Bradshaw said.

"So, could we have built a subset offline mode? Yes," she added. "But we rejected that idea because it didn't fit with our vision. We did not focus on the 'single city in isolation' that we have delivered in past SimCities."

Bradshaw said Maxis understands that longtime fans of the SimCity series are upset the game does not accommodate offline play. But at the same time, she said positive responses to the game's always-connected features has been numerous.

"We recognize that there are fans--people who love the original SimCity--who want that," she said. "But we're also hearing from thousands of people who are playing across regions, trading, communicating and loving the always-connected functionality."

Earlier this week, an anonymous Maxis employee claimed SimCity's servers aren't handling the kind of computations the developer is suggesting and that an offline mode is possible. In addition, a modder this week found a way to play the game in an offline state.

EA and Maxis' decision to have SimCity require an always-on Internet connection has proved highly controversial since the game's hobbled release last week, with Maxis insisting that the online requirement is to enable social play.

I bet me left hand that it is a lie! Thousands of people loving always online?! Where are them, than?
Also, they just admitted that they don't give a damn about the fans of original Sim City; people that bought the game and the same people that allowed them to do this game today.
Bad point they made here

@macaque12 They only care about money. They think people want what they are selling because people KEEP ON PAYING FOR IT. It's like going to a fast food place, complaining about the food and then just continuing to buy there every week.

Offline mode doesn't stop you having an online mode with all that stuff. You put it in to try and stop pirates. Can't f'ing wait for all the over priced DLC that your going to churn out. I've played the Sims in recent times, I know whats coming. If Simcity ever charges me for a bigger city space then I'm done with EA.

"Offline mode doesn't stop you from having an online mode..." This is all that needs to be said, nothing else. Except maybe...

"EA/Maxis are f**king liars!"

You already lied about simulating the game... Then release a broken mess... I'm sorry I can't take your stupid comments that "MOST people" want online.

Get with the program.

Oh and it's not fun when people join a zone then leave... Then never come back. Leaving power sucking or other services they drain on. Plus you can't even filter full games.

Ultimately it's the consumer's vision as well... since we keep you in business why do you think other developers always gain feedback to make their game. Apparently Maxis just wants to ignore everyone who didn't want DRM, and where are these made up people who are positive about it always being online ???

If this was just a multiplayer portion of the game, no one would mind. Still, this is the latest in a string of disasters. Now you can add Maxis to the list of the devs EA has ruined.

Why do people still support this company? They have FLAT OUT LIED to us. They are selling us products which are incomplete and then charge more for the parts they couldn't be bothered finishing or cutting from release. Yet people happily throw their money at EA.

A better idea would have been give player the choice to go offline or online, with more incentives and feature if people choose to go online, and if everything work as intended for the online aspects, people will flock to it anyway. By forcing the choice upon us, the game has become less, not more

@ux1077 A great example of this is Anno 2070, now that the always on DRM is removed. You can take items from one game to another and have some decent upgrades (which again transfer over). However, you can play the game offline with no issues now.

Origin Origin Origin. Don't give me this vision crap. You wanted people to be forced into Origin because you're playing catch up against platforms like steam. If you were honestly just trying to make a great game you’d have the online portion OPTIONAL.

I swear every time EA addresses this it only makes things worse.

SimShitty is broken. AI and scripts for several parts of the game (like traffic and workers) is completely messed up, integration between cities is reported to take 20-30 minutes (the opposite of being real-time), cities are more like neighborhoods, people keep losing their savegames, no undo feature, and so forth.

Whatever their vision was, regardless of their choice for a DRM, it never properly made it into this disastrous piece of software.

They can`t sound more pathetic than this.

Do you want this EA lunacy to stop? Don't buy the game. I returned my copy and got something that I can play on my system w/o having to be always connected online. I think we need to force EA to rethink their strategies by not buying into their crap, otherwise they'll continue to think that we're as dumb as cows and treat us as such.

In EA's sick mind "people like the cooperative gameplay" means "people like always online DRM". Lucy must've been a political spin-doctor in a past life.

"Straight Answers from Lucy"

While we can hope this was intentional irony, sadly it is more likely that EA really does think its users are stupid enough to believe this.

There is this weird menu of options in many games past and present. Two of them tend to say "Single-Player" and "Multiplayer". Is this that difficult to understand Straight Answer Lucy?

Always online is all about control. It has nothing to do with some nice little creative vision.

People were praising the online features!?!? What! Did I read that right....? I've seen no positive articles anywhere and haven't heard the words positive and online in the same sentence regarding Simcity.

This is a joke right.....? :S

Since it's obvious they put always on drm in the game and tried to camouflage it with social features and still sold hella millions of copies, I wonder how much they would have sold if they had just made a new sim city that the sim city fans wanted. Updated graphics, updated systems and AI, new buildings and what not to put in the cities, all kinds of shit... that wouldn't have sold well enough? Fuckin EA.

Leave it to EA to drop the ball on yet another slam dunk. The only reason they make any money at all, is because they have enough to buy up these high profile devs and their IPs, so even when they muck it up this badly, they still make millions.

Nobody with any sense gives a crap how they try to spin it, but it doesn't matter because it already sold enough to keep them in business, screwing over the gaming industry again and again.

EA just loves to lie. Yes, I'm sure there are people who like the always online social aspect you get from the game, but the truth is the majority of people want to be able to play offline. The funny thing is, these idiots think that they can release a statement and everyone will believe them when all you have to do is read anything Sim City related and the majority of feedback is outrage because of always online.
