EA signs up for more in-game ads

Megapublisher picks Microsoft-owned Massive to sell space in Madden NFL 08, Skate, and more.

Last year, Electronic Arts split its dynamic in-game advertising needs between two competing firms. IGA Worldwide was chosen to provide ads for Battlefield 2142, while Microsoft acquisition Massive, Inc. was selected for four PC and Xbox 360 games, including Need for Speed Carbon.

Today EA announced another excursion into the world of in-game ads, and the publisher is going with Massive once again. This time, Massive will provide ads for Madden NFL 08 and Tiger Woods PGA Tour 08 on the Xbox 360 and PC, and just the Xbox 360 editions of Skate, NHL 08, and NASCAR 08. In a statement explaining the company's decision, EA senior director of in-game advertising Shelby Cox said, "Massive has proven its ability to deliver relevant ads in a seamless, nondisruptive way that enhances the realism of the game environment."

Like other firms, Massive serves ads dynamically, meaning it can regularly update advertising in games on consoles with an online connection. The company's numerous other clients include Konami, Take-Two Interactive, Atari, THQ, Eidos, Vivendi Games, Sony Online Entertainment, and Ubisoft.

The newly Peter Moore run EA SPORTS partners with Microsoft owned ad providing company, bringing more in-game ads than ever before? What a shock!

My god whats next commercials since that will help the "realism" of the game unlike adding i don't know the camera crew, the rest of the referees, cheerleaders, chain gang, FG Net, ETC. I mean they don't even use the ESPN licence which is something that would actually make the game realistic but they choose in game Ads yeah i love that

The ads don't make close to enough money to lower prices yet. Maybe in 5-10 years.

As long as that extra revenue goes towards improving game quality, I'm all for it. Just keep them in games with realistic present/future settings. Or they can paint a historically accurate Coca-Cola mural on a brick wall in a WWII game for all I care. I'd rather enjoy that, actually.

I'm looking forward to some real ads in games like NHL 08, which never had any real ads until last year.

I'm pretty tired of the NCAA 08 Old Spice and Pontiac ads. At least build in an ad server lookup and switch it up a bit. Frankly, I think it's unacceptable for EA to be loading up their games with ads to complete the "televised experience" when the games themselves have damn near no ESPN presence. There hasn't been a football game that felt like a TV broadcast in years. The funny part is you're supposed to be watching a televised football game in Madden but there's not a single camera crew person anywhere on the field. They must be in the back eating pork rinds with the referees and cheerleaders.

This game isn't going to be sold for any cheaper, no game with ads has ever been cheaper. I'm sick of seeing in game ads. Look at R6:V, a giant billboard, a hundred feet tall advertising Axe-WTF?!?!? Axe ads popping up randomly in war-torn Mexico, this crap is retarded. Everyone hates commercials and advertising, all they do is awkardly pull you out of the state of immersion you're experiencing with your entertainment.

I agree with XenoGearOmega. More cowbell. Also seriously, are they doing this to mediate additional costs, or are they just trying to make more money? I think they would get a LOT more customers if they dropped the price. For example... my car insurance premiums actually dropped because of fewer accidents in my state. And I was also informed that my Netflix is getting CHEAPER for the same services. When was the last time any company lowered their regular prices for their customers (not a sale or gimmick to get new customers)?

IMO If the price of games goes down even $10 (to $49.99) thats cool because it will add a realistic feel to sports games (only) but if their adding ads to sports games because they'll get more money (don't have to pass the savings) and people won't complain because it's "realistic" i think i'd rather have fake ads

It make sense to have ads in sports video games because there in real sports. Like in Basketball the score table has that banner that changes through out the game with ads and I wouldnt mind seeing it in the game. Its when its all over the option screen and so forth that gets me mad.

I'll second Sam_Lowery's comments. That is an acutely accurate observation. With dynamic ads, be prepared to have an insane amount of ports to configure for a router (such is the case for BF2142). Not to mention the anti-malware+spyware+virus apps will have to be configured to not stop whatever it might be doing. These extra Dynamic Ads will not help anyone's connection reliability. The more often they adjust the ads the more likely you'll have a connection "issue" to troubleshoot. This is new stuff, and there are more often "bumps" along the road towards good performance. Dynamic ads are the result of poor negotiations for Static ad contracts.

~sigh~ Its bad enough we get bombarded by ads while watching TV (I no longer watch TV). Now we have ads in games, luckily I don't buy games from EA. The last game I purchased was Madden '05 and it looks like it will be the last. I wouldn't mind the ads if they were tailored to me (computer hardware, games, books, etc), but the next time I see an ad for TMI stuff I will stop purchasing from said company. Bye Bye EA.

I find them annoying, take R6 Vegas for example, for the Red Lotus mission, when you first begin in the chopper, there is this HUGE billboard for Axe followed by two more. I found that pretty lame.

Well, I'd say that ads may work in Skate as that's in a realistic environment. Well they'll work better in Skate than in BF2142 that's for sure. What really blows is that the games will still go for full retail price though, that's the only thing that peeves me off.

Whatever, CURSE OF MADDEN...can't wait to see Vince Young get broken this year. I mean why bother, every yeah you put some star on your cover, you either ruin his season or thier career (marshal faulk didn't do crap after that injury of that yea he was on the cover). Your game is a curse, DAOWN WITH MADDEN! Plus who wants to listen to John Madden anyway, that guy is an idiot...bring back ESPN to the 2K games and bring us Chris Berman!

This might suck, but get off the blame EA train. Ubisoft, among plenty of others, do the same thing. Play Rainbow Six: Vegas for proof.

"Massive serves ads dynamically, meaning it can regularly update advertising in games on consoles with an online connection." . So they use YOUR bandwidth to sell you things, ruin your game by having real world adds that pull you out of the in game world your trying to enjoy, AND slow down the game. But hey, I guess by now we should expect this kind of treatment from EA.

Everything is a business decision and therefore makes more money. Ads in certain games in certain situations make it more believable. Don't you think stadium ads in Madden will make the game more realistic and believable: Yes. So 2K fanboys (Guy below me) go buy your legends game, stop complaining and BTW were still paying 50-60 a game because that is the business model that is set up. Let's get serious.

Anytime you put something in like an ad it takes away from gaming, the reason thay put them in is to gain money each time there is an ad like a food ad you have the feeling i like to eat that hambuger or if thay add some pepsi ad you think of pepsi its all to gain alittle money from the people that play the game i just hope it callapse like it 1983 someday thay will make a ET like game and people would buy it and say its a rip off, if people would stop playing these games the ads will go away but thats the world for you i know i have along text you would not probaly read this but its just how i feel in these days of gaming someday it will all crash but oh'well thats how the world works.

Alright, so anyone remeber the article about End War having Ads so that they could do that Massive World War 3 online scenario, but by them putting ads in it, it kept it so we could play online for free? In sense just covering their server, maint, and other costs to keep the online war up. Well i could play skateboarding games and other games online before without paying extra because i bought and paid for my Xbox Live account, free public servers, or play on private servers, ect. So EA is going to get paid to put some companies add in thier games...so WTF are we still paying EA 50-60 dollars a game if they pull this crap. Ok i can understand the End War thing, because that benifits us...we get to play WW3 for freee...and have to see ad on a near by truck as we run by it...ok...i can deal with that. But screw you EA...your ruined the NFL2K series for me when signed with the NFL...and now this crap...you gonna load more ads to make money off us...still charge 50-60 bucks for the game...oh and don't forget, by the next MLB, NFL, NHL, or NBA season, the game is in sense worthless..because they won't put out updated rosters for the next seasons. You know what, heres a deal...you want to pump more ads into our NFL, NBA, NHL, and MLB games...fine...drop the price to 20-30 bucks and we'll call it even. But EA, you continue to give me reasons to keep by my sports games from other people...like Sega...i can't wait till your contract runs out with the NFL and we can have NFL 2Kwhatever year back...kiinda hurts when NFL 2k5 comes out for 20 bucks that year (brand new) and out did your Madden game hands down...what was 2k5...got a 9.something to maddens 8.something...better game for 20 bucks....EAs game for 50 bucks...yeah thats a hard one....AUH I HATE EA SO MUCH!

Ads are a big part of sports anyway. Seeing more of it doesn't really make much of a difference. I just don't wanna see 30-second commercials popping up in games, but if anyone were to start that crap, it would be EA.
