EA Provides Hope for Mass Effect Remasters

EA softens its position on remasters.

Electronic Arts has, to date, avoided entering the game-remastering business, even speaking out against the practice. That may change going forward, and it could potentially start with remasters of the Mass Effect games.

EA Studios boss Patrick Soderlund spoke about the subject with Game Informer at Gamescom. Asked if anything has changed for EA in terms of making remasters, such as one of the Mass Effect trilogy, Soderlund said, "What's changed is that there is proof in the market that people want it, maybe more than there was when we spoke [in 2015]. There were some that did it before, but I think there is even more clear evidence that this is something that people really want."

Game Informer also mentioned Activision, which initially avoided remastering games but has begun to produce them more recently (with mixed results).

"The honest answer is that we are absolutely actively looking at it," Soderlund said of remasters. "I can't announce anything today, but you can expect us most likely to follow our fellow partners in Activision and other companies that have done this successfully."

Soderlund noted the importance of "choosing the right brands for the right reasons at the right time." He added, "A remaster is something that you can just do or do it really well. I want to make sure that if we were to do it, we would do it really well and that people feel that it's the same game but it feels so much better in this new shape and form."

This is by no means a confirmation of a Mass Effect remaster (or any other specific project). It is, however, quite the about-face for the publisher.

While BioWare's Aaryn Flynn asked fans what they'd want from such a remaster in 2014, EA made it clear last year that it wasn't a priority. Soderlund admitted at the time that EA looked at the possibility but decided that "it's about weighing where we spend our resources. Is it better for them to be working on a completely new IP, which you know BioWare is, or should they be remastering a Mass Effect?"

Later in 2015, EA's Peter Moore took this further, describing the company as one "that just likes to push forward," adding that remastering games "feels like pushing stuff out because you've run out of ideas."

The next original Mass Effect game, Mass Effect: Andromeda, is slated for release between January and March of 2017.

The best way to remaster would be to add a happy ending to ME3.

I will fall in love again

I still enjoy playing games on PS3. I'm just playing Skyrim for the first time now, and then I find out it's being re-mastered. I like playing the games on the console they are originally released on, and am not usually tempted or motivated to play remastered games that I've already played. That said, for people who haven't played Mass Effect, it would be great for them to be able to play it on current consoles. Maybe not that many people keep legacy consoles around? I have both PS3 and PS4. I played Last of Us on PS3 and then got the remastered version when I bought my PS4 but haven't bothered playing through it again. It does seem to be a trend to release a remastered version of previous titles just before a new installment of a franchise, Uncharted's Nathan Drake Collection followed by Thief's End being the most recent example. There are always new players on new platforms to bring into the fold. It seems to help with marketing the new game as well. As if people aren't already excited enough about MEA. I'm basically peeing my pants at this point.

This is an easy sale. For them to NOT do this makes very little sense unless the cost to complete the remaster outweighs what they expect make. Otherwise, easy money.

What a great opportunity for EA and BioWare if they could remaster the entire Mass Effect Series to match the forth installment. Imagine the joy in starting again and following through from one game to the next to the next seeing and playing it in the direct X 12 mode and (hopefully adding better endings for each game). To me it's a no-brainier, remaster the three and offer them with the fourth at a little extra cost and they will once again reap millions and millions of dollars. I mean remastering a classic game series is an opportunity waiting to happen!

Avatar image for waelse1

I'd enjoy a remastered ME series available for modern consoles, but Microsoft now is able to make multi-disc games bc, so that would be enough. ME1 is ugly as f*** though.

I still have yet to play the Mass Effect series since I heard the rumors of a remaster a few years back.

Avatar image for Delston

@StingrayX5: Remastered or not, these are masterpiece games. Even ME3, despite its warts.

Avatar image for consolehaven

@StingrayX5: This sounds a bit like sarcasm. If it is, very funny.

Avatar image for domiddian

@StingrayX5: Oh man are you in for a treat. One of the best series of games I have ever played.

Avatar image for masscrack

As much as I love mass effect, they still look good, I'd rather have a KOTOR I AND II remake.

Avatar image for thespicychiken

@masscrack: agreed!!!!!!!

Avatar image for consolehaven

@masscrack: I would probably buy a remastered Kotor 1 over a ME remaster as well.

Avatar image for masscrack

huge discount on mass effect game collection on steam and origin, you can bet a remaster is coming and very soon!

I don't want a remaster, I don't want to play any of the games... all I want is the ME3 MP. Just rip it out, make it into it's own $20 purchase (including ALL dlc), upgrade it with better graphics, controls (shoulder swap please) and cut out the bugs (as best as possible) and I'll be happy.

Oh so happy.

Remasters are all well and good but there are too many of them and in my view we need something original like a new IP or something new and unique. Basically remasters are the same game just reborn in HD. That being said as someone who's never played Mass Effect I would be interested in seeing what EA has to offer.

Avatar image for scottyp360

This is encouraging news. Love these games so much. It would be great to have a remastered collection for current gen systems.

“What's changed is that there is proof in the market that people want it”

Remember when we wanted EA to stop giving us always online DRM for single player games? Or when they gave us bald faced lies about why they needed it in? Or when we said we didn't want our games swamped with immersion/enjoyment-sucking microtransactions?

Of course you do, because that's right now. EA, ever the people's champion.

Avatar image for rikku45

I can't see Andromeda being out in that time frame, We know nothing about the game and they would most likely want to torture us with a long wait.

Avatar image for pixelstuff

I'm disappointed that it still seems like no one has figured out how to automate the process of remastering in such a way that you can build photo realistic models in Maya or Blender or wherever, then have a game engine such as Unreal Engine 3 automatically extract and down-res the textures, geometry, etc to what it can handle in real time. When UE4 gets released a decade later then import the UE3 project files and let UE4 re-extract and rebuild everything to the newest standards. Repeat again for UE5 or 6 until the game engine is completely on par with the original models and physics defined by the 3D modeler and animators.

Avatar image for consolehaven

@pixelstuff: What you're proposing simply isn't feasible on many different levels. It would be really amazing though for a developer like Nintendo to say : '' Let's take a month to recompile Mario 64 and re release it in all its glory '' and 'poof' you have Mario 64 looking like Mario Galaxy on steroids. Again, though, not possible.

Avatar image for tonyleo01

@pixelstuff: yeah... I don't know. I think I understand what you are saying. Like there's a way to just plug hi-res models and what not into a software, then get it decimated or retopo into something that you can use outside of art programs. But based on my experience, automatic process is almost always never as good as doing them by hands. Being lazy during production is pretty much asking to get screwed over down the road imo.

Avatar image for femshep77

I would pay any amount of money for the Mass Effect trilogy to be remastered. More than enough fans are asking for it. That should want them to push this forward.

Avatar image for cimerians

I'd buy this in a heartbeat. Loved those games and wouldn't mind playing them again.

Avatar image for neacampbell

remake Mass Effect trilogy with latest engine and technology
revamp the shooting mechanic and add in more meaningful side missions and more things to explore
10/10 would buy the shit out of them

Avatar image for skyhighgam3r

They need to just put the whole thing into the same engine and label it as one massive game.

I'd buy that.
I'd buy that hard.

*goodbye horses*

Avatar image for consolehaven

@skyhighgam3r: That's Massively Effective!

Avatar image for bickle2

My biggest desire is to keep the original ME3 ending, instead of the spoon fed one for morons. God forbid they assume you had read some books, were paying attention and could extrapolate information.

Avatar image for skyhighgam3r

@bickle2: I never got to the end of ME3.

I thought it was like a bad/good ending after they 'fixed' it.

Avatar image for proceeder

What about Andromada? We have seen nothing so far! Is that game even in production anymore?!

Avatar image for pixelstuff

@proceeder: We saw this two months ago.

Avatar image for chatphon

and don't fotget to include all the goddamn dlcs. (Zaeed voice.)

Avatar image for siarhei

@chatphon: ME2 had some of the best DLCs, imho: Lair of SB, Zaeed, Kasumi, Overlord....

Avatar image for chatphon

@siarhei: yup i know, i own all dlc's (except item dlc) for ME2 on x360 ;)

my most fav. ShadowBroker > Overlord > kasumi (i like mission and well... Kassar Locust gun) > Zaeed.

love this series still collect it disc me1 platinum edition , me2 and 3 is collector edition.

Avatar image for skemaal

I will definitely get this. I just hope its done right and that all the DLC is included.

Avatar image for starjay009

I WILL surely buy this remaster if and when it happens. I <3 the Mass Effect Trilogy. I am emotionally attached to the story, my dearest commander Shepherd and all the characters. PLEASE make this happen EA ! You would then give the world a chance to love you and who knows, we all may also vote for you as the BEST company in the world ! xD

Avatar image for method115

Mass Effect trilogy is the remaster I want more than anything. With all the DLC it would be the ultimate remaster. If EA has any sort of brain it will do this.

Also wouldn't be so bad to have Dragon Age remastered but this isn't nearly as important to me and I'm not even sure I'd play it.

Avatar image for WeepsForFools

guess that's why there still hasn't been BC for ME2/3.. lame

Avatar image for bickle2

@WeepsForFools: because until about a month ago it wasn't possible. Multidisc games weren't supported due to having to figure out how to deal with the multiple product id

Avatar image for siarhei

@bickle2: And now it's possible but EA won't allow it.

Avatar image for VakarianGirl

My body is ready.

And there are calibrations to be done. ;-)))

Avatar image for BuyaPC

Mass effect and dead space are the last remasters I still want that havnt already been done or announced and they are absolutely perfect to be remastered in collection form. Oh unless we can get gears 2 and 3 ultimate editions which is just plain sad it didn't happen but otherwise I've basically had my fill of remasters

Avatar image for LowlyKnight

YES!! this is the ONLY remaster I've wanted since the beginning of this remaster craze. This would be a big project for sure but DEAR GOD I would buy the hell out of this!! Perhaps they are pursuing this now that ps neo and Xbox Scorpio are on the horizon making a 4K remaster totally a thing they could do!
