EA prepping Battlefield 2143?

Graffiti tag in DICE's Back to Karkand map pack may point to new installment in sci-fi FPS spin-off series.

Source: Enthusiast gaming site Battlefield 3 Blog.

What we heard: Battlefield 3 has done what Electronic Arts had hoped it would, with COO Peter Moore saying there's no doubt DICE's first-person shooter has taken market share from Call of Duty. EA must now press that advantage, and it appears as if it may do so by returning to its sci-fi spin-off, Battlefield 2142.

As first reported by Battlefield 3 Blog, DICE included a small graffiti tag (pictured) in Battlefield 3's recently released Back to Karkand map pack reading "2143." The tag can be found in the Wake Island map. However, whether or not this figure portends an imminent game announcement or simply a developer teasing its fans remains to be seen.

Easter Egg or soon-to-be-demolished residential abode?
Easter Egg or soon-to-be-demolished residential abode?

BF3 Blog argues that DICE has a history of planting Easter Eggs in its add-on packs, most notably Battlefield 2 Armored Fury. In that game, the site notes, the number 2142 was a recurring figure, appearing on the license plate of a car and in a billboard ad.

The site claims these teases predated the announcement of Battlefield 2142. However, the timing on that isn't quite right, as EA officially confirmed Battlefield 2142 in March 2006, but didn't release Battlefield 2 Armored Fury until June 2006.

Still, the number 2143 is tantalizing. In 2009, EA released Battlefield 1943, a stand-alone download-only shooter set a year after the original installment in the franchise. The Xbox Live, PlayStation Network, and PC game featured a number of maps first seen in previous Battlefield games. The game proved to be a substantial success for EA, setting then-Xbox Live sales records and going on to sell more than 1.2 million units.

The official story: "We love our fans attention to detail and hunger for more Battlefield but there is no news on this front."--An EA representative.

Bogus or not bogus: Tentative not bogus. If EA is looking to differentiate itself in the current landscape of first-person shooters (as much as one can differentiate itself in the current landscape of first-person shooters), time warping back to the future seems like a smart move. Plus, it seems highly unlikely DICE would include such a loaded number as 2143 without some ulterior motive.

this, now that the shooter market is more substantial than it was when the original 2142 or something was released, will open up the realm for the kind of shooters we know, love, and complain about, but with a future theme rather than the now stale (debatable) modern theme. Call of Duty will have more of a reason to change to future themes now, as they have kind of ran out of other time periods, unless they go to the past or something, however i would not much enjoy such a thing.

Vodoo @ im still waiting for developer make decent terminator game, last was abysmally disgusting and shame fully appalling. So i want 12 vs 12 sand box objective based human vs robots, in some odd way, maybe rts vs fps where rts gamers who control from a skynet hub can direct robots and production lines, while you fps humans need work as team stop waves and production lines and when you enter a production line the rts player needs leave rts and back in to fps to control the t2 terminator so it would be 23 vs 1 player lol based on match, now id pay 100$ for that uniqe fresh and addictive. Run it's t2 terminator, no some traitors infiltrated our defences shoot him, no im human idiots no no NOOO Dont. shoot him he activated the t2. anarchy on battlefield. legs getting blown up. never enter production line with infiltrators lol. Jimmy the t2's coming what do we do, RUN where los angeles s totalled ahh where !@# the end. The score fps 23 players decapitated 1 rts player still making terminators, replicators, drones, hunters,

I would like to see a future Battlefield game set in the Terminator universe, Humans vs Machines. Or... you could have human vs human with the machines being AI controlled and will just go after the nearest human. There's so much potential and the last Terminator game was such a pos and didn't do the franchise any justice.

This is epic in my opinion. 2142 was so good to me, by far my favorite bf game, and it only makes sense they would do that since 2142 came after bf2. I was hoping they would do this and tryin to get ppl to rally with me!! PLEASE DICE! PLEASE! Walkers and titan mode ftw!! 2142 was very original and that's what was so great about it. Aside from the walker being similiar to starwars there was nothing quite like it.

@nyran125 Uh, HL2 was released back in 2004 and was sold at $50USD. So my guess is they already made their money off it so are now able to sell it for $2.45USD. . .SIX YEARS LATER! lol I'm sure MW3/BF3 will be $3 six years from now.

Why are people rushing for 2143? We just bot BF3, they've made huge strides, how about we let em focus on perfecting that project and bringing in more content to make it a richer experience before we skip a century....Some gamers today are so damn demanding...

Oh god... I hope they release it. 2142 is by far my favorite in the BF series (And yes I have play ALL of them), and it would just be amazing if they could somehow adapt that to Battlefield 3.

64-player Operation Metro Conquest is already somewhat like some Titan games I remember if you think about it - crazy explosions everywhere, bum rushing capture points, deadly corridor choke points, carnage at every corner... :) 2143 would indeed be cool.

This was clearly a deliberate in the possible following scenarios. 1. They would have wanted to see peoples reactions, if quite highly received, then they can move forward towards it. If not so much, they can just dump it as a simple 'easter egg'. 2. Putting that in there with literally NO purpose would actually harm the franchise. If they put that in the game for people to later find, get a massive hype over, only to disappoint with no possible development with such a clear hint? doesn't sound very logical to me. ---- In any case I do look forward to it. But I still do see it as only being a large expansion, only because I doubt they would want BF3 to be replaced so quickly. But I do hope they put actual effort into it. Which EA, although near as evil as Activision, actually do seem to do with a lot of their games. Titan mode was a fantastic game mode and would be a great thing to bring in. The walkers were incredibly fun. It wasn't OVERBOARD futuristic with lame laser guns or anything like that haha. If they play their cards right they can be incredibly creative with what COULD come out in the future, and not concentrate so much on realism and replication of how weapons, tanks etc work. Could balance things way easier too, again if done right.

@nyran125 i use to be a fan of CS back in when i started in Ver.1.3 days. i got bored cause its the same strategy all the time. let a some players rush everyone else sit back and pick off enemies by hip shooting -_- no iron sights at all. thats why i stopped playing its like a better version of COD except COD has iron sights. from what i've seen CS:GO does not have iron sights. my point is, running around and hip firing eneies = skill less

CS:GO next year..who cares about EA or Activision, both can die. VALVE FTW. Rather play CS/Day Of Defeat/Team Fortress and Epic's Unreal Tournament 3 Black over any Multiplayer game BF or COD bring out. Do you hear Valve going on about We must kill EA or destroy Call Of Duty? no, why? because they actually are awesome. Half life 2 $2.45 right now on STEAM, best single player fps ever made. All EA origin games $89US, Activision games over $50. At least on STEAM Mass Effect 2 is $9. EA Origin, guess how much? $89US. As far as RPG's go bestheda already have that title of #1.

Completely agree with you Pete5506, Titan mode was the most fun I've probably ever had in Battlefield games. That's not to say that Rush mode isn't great, but Titan mode had that unique feel to it.

2143 would be an interesting expansion pack for BF3, but I'm not sure how compatible it would be. Maybe a standalone game as a downloadable content, but with crossover unlocks? Like your PSN ID is associated with Battlefield and unlocks earned in one game show up in the other. (medals and stuff, NOT weapons...)

"Plus, it seems highly unlikely DICE would include such a loaded number as 2143 without some ulterior motive." Keep in mind that the range of 'ulterior motives' can include Messing With People's Heads - if I were part of the dev team, I wouldn't be above planting little red herrings of this sort.

Ooooh Dice, I love you guys. I had a feeling that a sequel to 2142 was imminent, who DIDN'T love Titan mode? But this will probably be the next expansion they hint in the Battlefield store, which I won't mind as long as it's a big expansion (enough so that it feels like a second game entirely, kinda like Vietnam but bigger) Oh, by the way... ENEMY WALKER, IT'S DEFINITELY HOSTILE
