EA killing Online Passes for existing games

Publisher confirms it is retroactively eliminating online passes for all EA titles beginning with EA Sports games.

In response to consumer feedback, Electronic Arts has announced it is doing away with its controversial Online Pass scheme altogether. Previously, the company said only that future titles would not include Online Passes. Now, the move will be applied retroactively, beginning with EA Sports titles.

No Caption Provided

"As we discontinue Online Pass for our new EA titles, we are also in the process of eliminating it from all our existing EA titles as well," EA corporate communications representative John Reseburg told Game Informer. "We heard the feedback from players and decided to do away with Online Pass altogether."

"Players will see it first with some EA Sports titles, where a prompt to enter an Online Pass code will no longer appear in-game; with other titles we are simply making Online Passes available free of charge online," he continued. "These are rolling updates that are taking effect over the next several weeks. We hope players continue to enjoy our games and online services for a long time to come."

Online Passes have often been viewed as ways for developers and publishers to offset the financial shortfall of not seeing revenue when games are traded in and resold through retailers.

Too little, too late!

We all know why you did this two weeks ago but this is just yet another kick in the bollocks from EA, to all the people whom bought that same passes already?

"We heard the feedback from players and decided to do away with On-line Pass altogether."

Well you must be deaf? We've only been shouting "OUTRAGE!" at you for long enough already!

People have now had to put up with this for years, now you try to SPIN IT, by making out that you came to this decision because of the GAMERS?

Don't make me choke on my own vomit!!

E.A. = Extremely Arrogant!

They'll make more money from the used game fees so they're not doing this out of the kindness of their hearts. They're doing it to rope you into buying their shitty games more than once and they stand to profit far more.

Doesn't matter much, as lots of their games are already months from release, making it meaningless to remove the online pass, as the people who bought the games to play online or wanted to try the multiplayer already did or just gave up on it. Anyway, congrats to people who want to try the multiplayer of some EA games, although you will still have to pay for lots of DLC's and for micro-transactions.

@hellangel_boy You don't have to pay for DLC and micro-transactions. If you don't like them, don't buy them.

@jadaski1 @hellangel_boy Well, I don't buy them simply, But look at something like BF3 micro-transactions break the balance of the game, and some of their games feel like they aren't complete games and they release lots of DLC's for them.

Good to hear, but their motives are probably of an entirely different nature.

EA probably sees it that they simply won't need it for the future because Xbox One and possibly PS4 will have that used games garbage.

This doesn't really effect me since I buy new games only, but for the millions of other people, it really sucks and hurts their bottom line, especially if they enjoy a lot of games.

@wcwj26 You know the answer. I think they dropped it because they don't gain much from it now. They must have thought of it as a move to make them look better, but they already know that they win with that move more that they lose.

@FELOFLOW EA does not care, they just want your money, and you continue to let them do whatever they want by supporting them with your wallet when you buy their games. It's your own fault really.

EA: "We've listened to the fans and decided to give them what they want by removing online pass."

*silently chuckles and think to themselves* "because we now have a better system in place to tax their used games if they decide to sell it"

Wait a minute, no more online passes? There goes one of the reasons I had for boycotting EA! Keep this up, and don't do anything worse, and I may just start buying your games again.

I think that ever since EA's CEO stepped down they are turning a new leaf and making some good choices, if they make Star Wars Battlefront 3 I bet this whole EA hate train will get derailed.

I'm surprised at this to be honest, I know that EA are only ditching the Online Passes because of DRM and used games on the xbox one ,but I was expecting them to keep milking the current gen as much as they can...This doesn't make me think any better of EA but at least now I can play the used copy of Hot Pursuit I bought two years ago...for a few months until they close the servers.

Except that Nintendo's been quietly bending over backward to please its customers the past 6 months; tailoring MiiVerse to be an outstanding online community, free of charge. Has the only console that's backward compatible, INCLUDING downloaded games. Plays used games with no BS. Also, developers are more proficient with its architecture now, so they can get more out of the powerful, misunderstood GPU.

EA: **** online passes with M$ I can charge fees for playing used games.

gamer: I thought you guys were going to be good from now on.

EA: Are you fucking serious we dont care about the consumer we care about money and making horrible dumb down gow clones while putting those on origin.

gamer: you people are evil!!!

EA: Of course dumbass we were voted most worst company in america twice. Man you gamers are stupid always buying our games then bitch about them because they suck.

gamer:You guys will eventually end up like THQ

EA: May be but by that time we will already milked all my companies and franchises (Bioware,Dice,Crytek, visceral, and Maxis)(mass effect, sims, battlefield, crysis, dead space, kotor, and even star wars battlefront )So anyways have fun paying fees just to play used games.

PS If we go down everyone go's down.
