EA Giving Away Free Copies of Star Citizen Director's Classic Space Sim, Wing Commander 3

Wing Commander III: Heart of the Tiger can be yours free of charge through Origin starting today.

No Caption Provided

The latest free game to be offered through Electronic Arts' On the House promotion is Wing Commander III: Heart of the Tiger, the classic space combat simulation game.

You can claim your free game beginning today through the Origin website or the standalone client. Either way, the full game will be permanently added to your Origin library so that it can be downloaded and played again in the future. Past games to be offered through this promotion include Dead Space and Plants vs. Zombies.

Wing Commander III was developed by Origin Systems--not to be confused with the EA digital distribution service now giving the game away for free. It was released on PC in 1994 before being ported to the 3DO and PlayStation in the following years. Being a product of the mid-90s, it features live-action cutscenes and starred Mark Hamill, best known as Star Wars' Luke Skywalker and the voice of the Joker in Batman: The Animated Series and the Batman: Arkham games.

The game was designed by Chris Roberts (the creator of the Wing Commander series), whose name you may now know as the director of Star Citizen, the space sim game that has attracted more than $49 million in crowdfunding.

What game would you like to see from EA's back catalog given away next? Let us know in the comments.

GameSpot may get a commission from retail offers.

I bought this game from GOG sooooo many months ago. Late to the party is an understatement. They have been sitting on gold mine franchises for years. IDIOTS!

EA, your too late, and this is just a shady and dishonest way of getting into people's wallets through the side door. Is this is a subtle admission that you've been wrong for years about your game design philosophy and what types of games and platforms we actually like? Or is it just a shameful display of riding a popular game's coattails?

Either way, all I can say is UP YOURS!

And in each free game download is a backdoor that automatically deducts $50 from your method of payment for BF4 Premium, whether you have BF4 or not.

I won't use Origin for anything, free or not. If EA wants any more of my money, they will have to sell their games on Steam. EA's Origin and Ubisoft's UPlay are not competition for Steam. They are annoyances that make me avoid their software. The last EA product I bought was Mass Effect 3 and Origin had so many problems that I never even bothered with the DLC. The dumbest thing for EA is that if they put the deluxe versions of all the Mass Effect games on Steam tomorrow I would buy them in a minute.

No thanks, GoG works better for me, and I would rather pay for it there vs getting it free from EA's blood soaked hands.

<< LINK REMOVED >> To compete with Steam, you must be the friendliest game service on the planet. Free games, returns accepted, live customer service -- these are all things Origin offers that Steam does not.

If EA starts offering avenues and incentives for indie devs to publish their games on Origin, Steam may actually have some competition.

The problem is that EA has a track record of shutting down servers not profitable enough to keep running. Also, they're a publicly traded company and act like sociopaths. If it's in the perceived best interest of EA to make Origin go away, it will be gone along with all your games.

That being said, EA could pay Origin reps to come over and massage my balls for four hours a day and I still wouldn't use Origin over Steam... but I do still use it.

I already have the entire Wing Commander series on GoG, DRM free with loads of extras, so no thanks, still not allowing Origin DRM client anywhere near me.

They are awesome games and everyone interested in good space combat games should get them, just not through Origin.

Did GS really have to entitle their article like that? On my RSS feed reader on my mobile, it truncates it to "EA is giving Free copies of Star Citizen"

On the other hand...it's Origin.

That's his callsign. His name is Ralgha nar Hallas or something sci-fi-y like that.

And the callsign was given as a reference to the philosopher, not the stuffed tiger....but I guess it was a double reference on the part of the writers.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> As someone who has used both extensively and easily prefers steam, Silent Jay is right. A lot of problems people have on steam though stem from features that aren't present on Origin like errors with community features and trading. Origin is really just an online store at the moment.

I think people just hate on origin because EA won't allow their latest games on steam. There's really no other reason.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> I'm forced to agree. Although my time in steam is massively more than Origin, which means I might just not see as many issues with Origin, overall Origin has far less features. I did play a couple hundred hours in BF3, and saw lots of problems, but they weren't Origin issues as far as I could tell, and that's when the software was pretty young.

On the less invasive, I would have to agree as well. By invasive I mean annoying or "in your face" kinda things, not about privacy and such which I won't get into. Steam definitely makes it presence known to you more than Origin.

But regardless, overall I would say Steam is better. With all the features and community stuff, it's not even really a fair comparison.

Meanwhile the creator asks 90 dollars/180 dollars/80 dollars/1000 dollars and more for ship, in-game credits and so on for his massivelly delayed, to be never completed Star Citizen game.

It sounds like EA is not "evil" after all (as CR, members of CIG Staff and its fans scream around the world)... well... not so "evil" as Chris Roberts at least.

@tommen_stark EA giving away a 20yr old game for free and you're using it to bash a game that's still in development. Yes I do realise they both have the same producer and I know you like trolling SC articles but seriously, you need to get out more.

Maybe its cause I tried this on a joystick back in the day, but I just tried it now, and I do not know how to control this plane with a mouse and keyboard. Figured out the plane moves with arrow keys, but I do not know how to shoot lol
