The latest game in EA's On the House promotion is a good one: Dragon Age: Origins. Beginning today, you can download it for free through Origin.

Origins is the first game in the Dragon Age series, having launched on Xbox 360, PS3, and PC back in 2009. It was very well-received upon its release, earning a 9.5 in GameSpot's review thanks to its enjoyable combat and excellent story.

This free copy of Origins comes in time to give you just over a month to play it before the arrival of Inquisition, the third game in the Dragon Age series. That game brings back a major aspect of combat that was abandoned in Dragon Age II, the tactical view. It will also feature a way of importing your choices from the first two games, though you won't do so by importing a save file (so don't worry if you play Origins on PC and Inquisition on consoles).

Some will bemoan needing to use Origin, EA's Steam-like digital platform, but this is a free game (regularly priced at $20) with no strings attached. Previously, we've seen games like Dead Space and Wing Commander III given away, and you can still get the most recent On the House game--Bejeweled 3--for free right now.

The offer on Origins last only a week, so if you're interested, be sure to claim your copy before October 14. Doing so will permanently add it to your Origin library.

Has anyone been able to register the game on Bioware Social Network?

Pre-order dlc is also free for Origins and DA II

Ironic how one of the greatest games BioWare has ever made is now being given away for free.

I'd be rushing for a free game of this caliber, but I already have it on disc. Happened the same with Dead Space on a previous Origin give away.

Just curious. What happens when you install Origin on your PC? It sounds like it will wreck your PC or something....

Although I highly recommend Origins for any RPG fan because it represents bioware at its finest before it took its jump off a cliff. I got shafted by EA and my DLC was voided somehow when i originally played it. I would recommend the steam version which does not need origins. The other thing im wondering about is if they are giving away that vanilla version so that everyone gets the DLC? or is it the ultimate edition they are giving away?

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> I will blame that on clever marketing, since its such a good game (the last game EA made before it went evil) that some of the people that play it will be interested in the DLC and end up buying it.

Oh! That's really nice of EA - wait a minute....
*squint*

"Download it for free through Origin."

Is this your way of paying me to use Origin? I'll pass, EA.

I would put this next to the Sims2 complete pack which I also got for free in their last giveaway, if only I could remember the account credentials I used just for that and never have logged in since.

Basically it's just an account to taint their statistics, so they can boast how many registered (but inactive) accounts they have.

Whatever, it's not like I'd ever install or use Origin in the first place, haha.

I'd have bought Dragon Age Origins when it was on sale on Steam last week but as I read it required additional external account registration in order to get the DLC I immediately skipped it and didn't buy it because screw that.

Also because of the fear that EA might sneak in their abysmal Origin DRM nonsense in an update and infect my system with it.

<< LINK REMOVED >> It's a ruse designed not only to get people to download Origin, but also to build up some hype for Dragon Age: Inquisition before it comes out next month.

<< LINK REMOVED >> What reasoning is behind that? Are you sticking it to the man by choosing one free digital store and gaming platform created by a large corporation over another free digital store and gaming platform created by a large corporation? Way to go. You're leading the movement. A+.

Enjoy one of the last great western party RPGs for free and then see how EA ruined the franchise. Next they're going to offer up Mercenaries 1 & 2.

Really worth checking out, I recommend getting it if you haven't already. Even if you don't want the Origin program, just get an Origin account and redeem the game to download it later whenever you want to play it. It'd be a shame to miss out.

I've been grateful to EA for On the House games, but I don't like that EA is purposefully offering the vanilla and not the Ultimate Edition. I've almost forgotten how Origin initially demanded I let it spy on my computer for EA-related software. I've forgiven EA for terminating two of my old favorite franchises. I've NOT gotten over how EA played a crucial role in shaping how the industry monetizes add-on content. Free is free and good for a demo, but I'd rather pay for the Ultimate Edition during Steam sale.

Thank you EA. I have to say I played this on the Xbox 360 and really didn't like it much, however, the new one is somewhat interesting. Seeing as how this was free I played it again for a couple of hours and though I'm not far at all, I do find the game more fun than when I first played it. I can't help but think that the better graphics and much better UI for PC might be the main reason.

I assure you guys that there is nothing wrong with origin. I get way faster download speeds with Origin than I do on steam. Plus you can run your origin games through steam with overlay and everything.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Origin undoubtedly has faster download speeds, but that's because nobody is using the servers' bandwidth because Origin is fecal matter compared to Steam.

Supporting EA or giving them the idea I will support them (primarily because of their attacks on marriage and supports of the lgbt sickos) is to high a price. Even when it's free, it's not free.

This is only the standard edition. The ultimate edition with the awesome awakening expansion was just on sale on steam for $7.50. Great game though, I recommend playing it no matter how you can get it.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Yeah. I got it and played it when it wasn't locked into Origin. But now, like ME, BF, Titanfall and so many others, it's a prereq, so I take my business elsewhere.
