EA considering offline mode for SimCity

EA is canvassing player feedback on offline mode and content for future expansion packs.

EA may be looking at the possibility of adding offline play and other features to SimCity as part of its future updates for its world-building series, according to a customer survey that has surfaced on Reddit.

No Caption Provided

The survey, which can be seen here in screenshots, seeks player feedback on potential upcoming features. These include: farms, faster rebuilding after disasters, overpass and underpass roads, cities twice the size of current land plots, terraforming, cooperative city building with friends, and Classic mode. The latter is described as allowing players to, “In offline or online mode, play a single, fully functioning city using cheats and unlocks that allow you to create your perfect city.”

Among other possible changes are four new additions to an upcoming expansion pack. Simulate to the Sky is described as adding the ability to build up instead of out to create SuperScrapers. Players will also be able to zone the new building type residential, commercial, and industrial concurrently, as well as create multi-layered transportation, and improve overall city density to raise populations.

Greed cities add a resource-consuming mega corporation that boosts profits--a robotics augmentation business--and increases the total amount of trash and pollution produced. Conversely, green cities add an academy to research advanced technology and generate wealthy, highly skilled workers, and your city will better collaborate with others on research.

The last component of the new expansion pack is called Transform Tomorrow. It will allow players to watch their cities change as future technologies are added, or see your region become affected by the actions of your future cities.

Launching to low review scores and server troubles, Maxis co-founder Will Wright described the game's initial release as being "inexcusable" for consumers, saying that both EA and Maxis failed to adequately communicate with players.

GameSpot contacted EA seeking clarification regarding the customer survey. A spokesperson from the publisher was unavailable at time of publication.

Offline and bigger map "consideration"? Sticking to pass success formulas like Classic mode and User Made Content on SimCity Exchange? So you suits knew what we wanted but try to shove your great Facebook wannabe ambition down our throat!? Well, glad business sense and REALITY has finally caught up with you! But what took you so long EA? Pride? Ignorance? Hubris? Well, just in case you are REALLY LISTENING THIS TIME... As a typical city and transport sim gamer, here are my no-compromise expectations. Minimum 8x8 size map, or even 12x12 option - I won't give a crap for any smaller game map in 2013. Maps must be continuous on the region view or forget it - don't tell me on where to build cities, don't patronize me with your pre-determined city transport links. Hello your PC gamers are not buncha Facebook farmville lightweights like yourselves who freak out at unlimited creative freedom. And yes Lot Editor, user made content on SC5 exchange, or no talk. Because I hate same old aesthetics. Because not everyone likes your shiny cartoon style. And because user made content helped made you billions in the past. So stop being so clever, stick to old formulas. $$$$$$$$$$$, OK? And finally - what you mean by OFFLINE? Don't even try to play word games with us, one more lie we will desert you forever. By OFFLINE, you must mean total independence from server, Origin or Steam or whatever. By OFFLINE, you must mean we get to save our cities on our PC, and when you sunset/ kill the servers to make way for SimCity 2015, we still get to play SC2013 cities. 100% Offline, then yes. Otherwise, expect more brimstones and indifference from your customers.

Don't just consider it. Do it. Hackers are trashing our cities and we can't play the game when the servers are down. I've said this before in the SimCity forums but EA silenced me.

I would be down if an offline "classic" mode was enabled, it was put on Steam and put on a really good sale. Origin isn't touching my computer again...

Once the game goes single player with larger cities, I'll probably buy it. I hate the idea of giving money to EA but I've loved this series for too long to have the experience totally ended by them.

@BowmanKCMO My thoughts exactly. I would buy this if........

It does not require origin, and it can be gotten on steam.

It does not require a connection AT ALL

City sizes were more then 4x their current size.

Totally could have been best city game ever made.

The fact that they're still "considering" it and not trying to implement it already, makes me wonder about the limits of human intelligence.

so in other words put all the feature back in from sim city 4? also cities "twice the size" is still no where near good enough

This is why you never put developers in charge of the big boy decisions involving accessing a game. That stuff is dictated by the upper management, not some lowly devs that work at Maxis with them fantasy simcity simulation ideals.

Ideals don't get you profitses.

I suppose they needed to wait for the storm to pass before doing this sort of survey, but they're going to get mostly the same answers: everyone wants an offline mode, larger cities, and other basic features. Will they deliver? Somehow I doubt it. Maybe in the next release of the game. In five years.

@ernelson1976 Yeah its the old story, if you make a mistake, just wait a while then announce the obvious fix as an innovation. If we were in fact (as they believe) a collection of drooling morons, it would work great!

@ernelson1976 Maybe 10 years, with half a dozen interface changes, and even then we won't get what we want. First, Duke Nukem Forever, then Diablo 3, now this crap. At least I enjoyed some of DNF...Diablo 3 sucked ass, and I won't even buy this version of SimCity. Don't get your hopes up, it seems the game developers are running franchises into the ground like train companies in the old 1830 series of board games.

"Considering"? How arrogant are EA, you should have sorted out the issues people had from day 1 not 7 months later! Anyway, didn't you tell us offline mode is impossible? The stink coming from EA is getting nauseous. I'm now going to "consider" if I will buy another EA game......... Nope, still not convinced.

Why now? You guys knew that we, the consumer, didn't want the always online BS, the same way we don't want the always connection on the XBOX one.

Really is it me, or are we, the consumer smarter than the people that creates these things?

@Eckkovoid Developers are not business people, which is why they make terrible business decisions. Had someone like Peter Moore or whomever is in charge of that part of the company put their foot down, we would have had an offline mode in the first place.

Instead whomever is in charge of that failed at their job and let the Maxis joker developers think like douchebag know-it-alls, self-serving douchebags that are even far more detached from their customers. Getting allowed to make the big boy decisions they never deserved as a consequence.

Oh really? So suddenly this is possibly despite insisting it couldn't be done? EA Can suck it, I'm not buying this on the principle that they told me offline mode was impossible when really its DRM marketing bullshit.

Now excuse me while I play some games published by companies that aren't trying to stick it to me at the moment.

I'd take the double the size of plots over the offline mode. Because you know they're going to make players choose between only a select few features.

So mommy's not making you play in the needle infested, piss filled, dog pooped, flea infested sandbox with all the other big kids?

Nice to see them consider something that's been a thing like not even a week after the game came out.

I wonder if it'll let you have an option to make a copy of your offline city to use share if you want on the online game. Things like this are more fun when you can toggle seamlessly between on and offline modes. Not having to worry about someone trashing your City sorta stuff.

It is so interesting to see EA throw in its own glasses. I am not completely in agreement whether this was just about DRM. It is about moving more and more towards a server authentication situation, and through on-line mass approach and marketing. The fact that connection issues remained to such extent i nothing less then utter inability to proper prepare and test a product. I reckon that if EA cannot get that right, they have no business being in an on-line environment.

Don't sweat it. The whole "connected" universe thing is just an excuse for publishers to justify the game requiring you to be always online for DRM purposes. This is the real primary reason for it.

If enough people vote with their wallets and not buy these games, they will stop making them online only.

just wait til the game gets pirated and enjoy pointing middle finger to EA and Maxis for all their greedy decisions that destroyed the SimCity franchise.
It's pretty *cough* fascinating that people call pirating stealing. This word "stealing" in relation to downloading a virtual copy of the game has been promoted heavily by the companies in order to make it seem much worse than it actually is. It's not stealing since the product is untouched completely. It's an old word that has no relation to this new phenomenon of downloading a copy of a game. Pirating is our way of saying F*** Y** to greedy companies and false advertisement.
