EA considering offline mode for SimCity

EA is canvassing player feedback on offline mode and content for future expansion packs.

EA may be looking at the possibility of adding offline play and other features to SimCity as part of its future updates for its world-building series, according to a customer survey that has surfaced on Reddit.

No Caption Provided

The survey, which can be seen here in screenshots, seeks player feedback on potential upcoming features. These include: farms, faster rebuilding after disasters, overpass and underpass roads, cities twice the size of current land plots, terraforming, cooperative city building with friends, and Classic mode. The latter is described as allowing players to, “In offline or online mode, play a single, fully functioning city using cheats and unlocks that allow you to create your perfect city.”

Among other possible changes are four new additions to an upcoming expansion pack. Simulate to the Sky is described as adding the ability to build up instead of out to create SuperScrapers. Players will also be able to zone the new building type residential, commercial, and industrial concurrently, as well as create multi-layered transportation, and improve overall city density to raise populations.

Greed cities add a resource-consuming mega corporation that boosts profits--a robotics augmentation business--and increases the total amount of trash and pollution produced. Conversely, green cities add an academy to research advanced technology and generate wealthy, highly skilled workers, and your city will better collaborate with others on research.

The last component of the new expansion pack is called Transform Tomorrow. It will allow players to watch their cities change as future technologies are added, or see your region become affected by the actions of your future cities.

Launching to low review scores and server troubles, Maxis co-founder Will Wright described the game's initial release as being "inexcusable" for consumers, saying that both EA and Maxis failed to adequately communicate with players.

GameSpot contacted EA seeking clarification regarding the customer survey. A spokesperson from the publisher was unavailable at time of publication.

"cities twice the size of current land plots, terraforming, ... Classic mode"

Hmm, interesting, but twice the size might still be too small to bring back the feeling of previous SimCity games. Now, if Classic Mode means simply expanding out over an entire map like the old games, I'll totally buy into it. I still don't know if that's possible, since so many times it was claimed the new engine could not handle more than 100k citizens at once, as well as saying other elements of the new simulation could not handle large cities like the previous games.

It's too late for them to add to this game enough to make me want to buy it. Far too late.

Maxis should have stood up for themselves. They're fucking Maxis. Who the **** is EA compared to Maxis? What has EA ever brought us? The exclusive rights to major league sports, oh wow. Outside of that they release games that actually ARE good or COULD have been good, but were ruined or milked unto ruin by EA's greedy fucking soulless ass.

Maxis is the damn king shit of city building games, they invented it. If I were them I'd have bolted from EA as soon as possible, but I'm sure the moment it was possible years and years ago, EA bought the rights to SimCity, and the Sims, and the older Sim titles. So it wouldn't have helped but at least they'd have their dignity. You can't eat dignity though :-/.

Then again from the interviews, Maxis "Chose" to go that route with their game. It's not like the good ole' days with Will, that's for certain.

@Clownbabby I certainly never bought it. I was looking so forward to it, having been a fan for years and having bought every single game, including the awful SimCity Societies. I never will, either. I'll steal that shit. They can try again next time because I did honestly want to play in a region with my roommate.

After the massive backlash it's funny that they're just 'considering' the offline mode. Think hard guys, giving people what they want can trigger side effects like 'customer satisfaction' and 'more sales'. I know that's something you were trying to avoid with this game...

The game is actually really fun, but the DRM really ruined it

Diablo 3 error 37 lasted about an hour, then was fine, people couldn't get into Simcity for weeks

offline mode would be nice

they need to insist on improving their products 'before' they actually get released for once.

been playing games for 30 years, and cant help but keep using the word 'pathetic' over and over again for this generation of games.

@Crush_Project I'm glad i'm not the only one thinking this. A lot of games now-a-days are made by big companies looking to put profit first and everything else second. Gone are the good old games where games were made by gamers for gamers.

@cgobeil Online should be an option for all the games, not forced, unless of course it's a mp-only game, but even then offline should be offered so people can play modes like DM, T-DM, etc. with bots when their connection is down or traveling or otherwise no online availability (examples: CS:GO, UT3 BlackEdition, etc.). Even some sp's buy games like CS:GO and just use bots, some as a preference and some because they don't want to play with random strangers online and their friends either aren't gamers or aren't available at the same times (jobs/family/etc.), that's a smaller % but money is money and it's still selling a game. People want to play/enjoy their games their way, not some suit's way.

Lmao great work EA, havent been this amused with BS since the Xbox launch XD. Your "Considering" an offline mode ?, after players found out how to play offline months ago ?. Your considering expanding the city's after the players hacked it to expand ?....what complete and utter bull, Your game is a complete mess with key features missing or totally scrapped in favor of the current model. Reminds me of C&C4....you dont screw with the games basic's

So, let's get this straight. X amount of people have now bought the game and have cracked it, to make it work offline. EA realize that X amount of people now can't buy any expansion packs because there games 'void'. Solution, give in, admit defeat, admit they lied and then continue making mega-bucks.

you can't do something impossible, after all, that's why you had it always online in the first place.

I actually really enjoy the game still. There's some serious issues and features that are lacking, so reading this only gets me excited that they might be introducing them. Overpasses and bigger city plots FTW!

@ElFlechero It doesn't allow overpasses? Are you serious?? That's ridiculous. I'll stick to my SimCityBox (which I have loaded now and can play without origin, which there's no way I'm loading, and yes it's a legal physical copy). If this had expected features in it, offline, and no origin requirement, I might get it, short of that, not happening.

@edgardpoe @Thanatos2k Did you expect otherwise from EA the master of fucking ruining all that is good and innocent and decent? Name one game they haven't milked the **** out of or ruined or shittily marketed. Because I can easily name 10. System Shock 2, Army of Two: Devil's Cartel, SimCity, all sports games, Battlefield BC2, Battlefield 3, Battlefield 4, Dead Space 3, Medal of Honor, C & C, Battlefront, Crysis 2 and 3, THE SIMS. The list is endless.

(System Shock 2 was a wonderful game that sold absolutely no units because EA, the publisher, didn't do their job to sell it) Not until over 10 years later, now, because they added it on GOG.com and Steam.

No kidding.

You have to be ahead of the curve. You can't try to force shit on people, wait until crackers inevitably have their way with your product, and then wait months to address these issues. I'm glad I haven't paid for the game.

Too late.
