EA considering offline mode for SimCity

EA is canvassing player feedback on offline mode and content for future expansion packs.

EA may be looking at the possibility of adding offline play and other features to SimCity as part of its future updates for its world-building series, according to a customer survey that has surfaced on Reddit.

No Caption Provided

The survey, which can be seen here in screenshots, seeks player feedback on potential upcoming features. These include: farms, faster rebuilding after disasters, overpass and underpass roads, cities twice the size of current land plots, terraforming, cooperative city building with friends, and Classic mode. The latter is described as allowing players to, “In offline or online mode, play a single, fully functioning city using cheats and unlocks that allow you to create your perfect city.”

Among other possible changes are four new additions to an upcoming expansion pack. Simulate to the Sky is described as adding the ability to build up instead of out to create SuperScrapers. Players will also be able to zone the new building type residential, commercial, and industrial concurrently, as well as create multi-layered transportation, and improve overall city density to raise populations.

Greed cities add a resource-consuming mega corporation that boosts profits--a robotics augmentation business--and increases the total amount of trash and pollution produced. Conversely, green cities add an academy to research advanced technology and generate wealthy, highly skilled workers, and your city will better collaborate with others on research.

The last component of the new expansion pack is called Transform Tomorrow. It will allow players to watch their cities change as future technologies are added, or see your region become affected by the actions of your future cities.

Launching to low review scores and server troubles, Maxis co-founder Will Wright described the game's initial release as being "inexcusable" for consumers, saying that both EA and Maxis failed to adequately communicate with players.

GameSpot contacted EA seeking clarification regarding the customer survey. A spokesperson from the publisher was unavailable at time of publication.

Then, I might actually consider buying it, but they would have to fix all the bugs and make it at least as good as the previous games in the series.

Don't matter anymore the game play sucks. The maps are too small it don't have that sandbox feel to it anymore.

I have been YELLING from the beginning, I WANT this game, but NOT without the choice of playing offline. Damn it, I've supported this series since SIM CITY the original, back when there were Amigas and Ataris, way before there were ants and helicopters.

Since when EA start caring about player's feedbacks?

Hmm several months ago, didn't Lucy Bradshaw said SimCity offline mode didn't fit with our vision? And now they're considering it? Lol

Key quote: "it didn't fit with our vision"

http://www.gamespot.com/news/ea-simcity-offline-mode-didnt-fit-with-our-vision-6405424

'"The game we launched is only the beginning for us--it's not final and it never will be. In many ways, we built an MMO," Bradshaw said.

"So, could we have built a subset offline mode? Yes," she added. "But we rejected that idea because it didn't fit with our vision. We did not focus on the 'single city in isolation' that we have delivered in past SimCities."'

Why are they only considering? They should just install the offline mode, and give us some cookies. It's the least they could do.

So lets see, SimCity so far...

EA at launch: "Oh well its impossible to make this game play offline. It was designed specifically for online multiplayer only. We cant make it offline even if we wanted to"

SimCity post launch: Random guy creates hack/mod that allows the game fully offline.

EA further into SimCity post launch: "Well we are considering making it offline"

Then sprinkled in between those moments that released a touted free DLC pack which was basically just a commercial for like a car company, then they announce 10 dollar DLC which gives you......9 ballons......and then talk about their next dlc/expansion pack which youll be paying for.

What a bunch of lying dicks. I still cant believe people were applauding EA when they announced battlefront 2 and mirrors edge practically begging EA to take their money.

I wouldn't be surprised if offline mode was included into a paid expansion pack. "Yeah folks here it is, out 37th expansion for SimCity! Youll get 13 new pieces of lawn furniture and a all brand new offline mode all for the low price of 34.99!" And people would still buy it.

Just waiting for them to release that offline mode in DLC with a price on it. The community wide "nope" will be glorious.

Too late EA Maxis, Sim City is dead.

Nice try on putting yourselves in the other side of the road EA, always trying the "wait... give us feedback we listen" crap.

Will keep playing my SC4 Deluxe instead, that was the last SimCity where your influence was yet no that destructive as nowadays.

I'm still upset about buying this and I have never even played it. These patches should have been released at least during the first week of launch (or better yet with the game so they could've avoided all this crap). I'm still never buying anything from them again and knowing EA you're going to have to pay...

@downloadthefile @Vienreich @Golden_Gonads lol "people like you disgust me".. for what, saying that pirating is ok? I don't think you have the mental capacity to understand the world population does not have the priviledges you have you little dipshit. There are unemployed, poor, sick , students, drug abusiv parents, etc etc. These do not have 50€ to spend on one single game. I GLADLY see them being able to download games and play them equally as much as you, little brat. Totally disconnected from the reality you live in. Your parents must be proud to have brought this little turd upon the world

@Vienreich @Golden_Gonads No, you idiot, it's a theoretical example. If everyone was as selfish as you are, and stole games like you do, then games would never be made. That's the point. You shouldn't act in a way where if everyone did it, it would ruin something. You're basically admitting that you're a parasite, able to steal only because the people who follow the rules enable games to still get made, and you just sit in a corner waiting for us to pay so you can steal.

And because the idea of intellectual property is just a bit too abstract for your intellect, you think it's perfectly okay to steal. People like you disgust me.

@Vienreich Both EA and pirates disgust me, as a person who wants to honestly pay for something but then gets punished for actions I haven't taken. If pirates didn't exist, neither would this kind of DRM.

@downloadthefile Companies hate the pirate scene cause it makes it much harder for them trick us into buying bullshit. With the help of the pirate scene I can support games that are truly quality and not just a shallow piece of s*** they threw out to make some extra cash at my expense. I'm still pissed badly bout buying this crap SimCity which I have been a fan of since the 90's. Long live the pirates

There are billions out there, being poor and unemployed from ecnomies that are putting hard strain on peoples lives. Thanks to pirates they can too enjoy some of the games you little dipshit can enjoy. You arrogant f***

@downloadthefile Piracy cannot be stopped. There will always be people who will download whatever they want so they don't have to pay. But like a good number of games there are always "factions" of sorts.

Some pirates pirate games to try before they buy, some want to buy but refuse to until the company changes it's business practices or removes the DRM.

Pirates and their cracks prove DRM doesn't work, so why keep including it when all it does is inconvenience the consumer?

I have bought all of CD Projekt Red's Witcher games, Rockstar's Grand Theft Auto games, etc. But any EA title I have any interest in I straight up pirate because I will NOT support that company.

Some of "us adults" are willing to make a statement in other ways concerning this products even if society looks down upon it and considers it illegal.

@Vienreich @downloadthefile What are you talking about? game studios are closed down constantly, even publishers like THQ go out of business. Square Enix has said if their new MMO doesn't sell that they're gonna go out of business too. These aren't small companies.

And no, pirating doesn't help companies thrive. That's an idiotic assertion to make. If it did, WHY would they have DRM????? Unlike you, who has some sort of broken moral code about theft, we adults realize that we don't get to have everything we want. We don't steal and then decide to pay if we liked something. And I assure you, most of you idiot pirates don't pay for anything, sorry this is just what the numbers reflect.

@Vienreich @downloadthefile Nope, most companies hate pirates because it makes it hard to make money when people steal your product. I agree that companies put out crap, that's why there's dozens of reviewers online, previews, E3, etc. So your argument is moot, and it's your own fault for jumping the gun on SimCity, don't take it out on other developers who make truly good products. Witcher 2 was pirated 4 copies to 1 legitimate sale. That is disgusting, it proves the anti-DRM pirates are a myth, because Witcher 2 had no DRM.

@downloadthefile @Vienreich You can also look at it from the opposite viewpoint, however. Because companies keep using DRM, more and more pirates are appearing to fight against it. Kinda a stalemate if you ask me.

@Dragon_Nexus @Vienreich @downloadthefile @Higurashinoni That's just stupid. There's no stealing gas. The gas is still there!! nothing has been taken from it. How can it be stealing?? This word has been promoted by the companies to make it seem like a very bad thing since they think they're losing revenue. It's such a vastly stupid and old word to use for this new phenomenon. And no, games are not and should not be a luxury for the wealthy. It's part of youth culture in the 21th century

@Higurashinoni @downloadthefile @Vienreich Piracy in general is a matter of service rather than getting something for free.

Sure there will always be pirates who wave the "I wasn't going to buy it anyway" flag and want to simply justify stealing, but the majority seem to want to do it because the alternative is putting up with anti consumerist BS.

iTunes did well as a paid service because it allows you to redownload your music, it offers music for a pretty good price at high quality and it's easy to find. Before iTunes the option for downloading music was Kazaa or Limewire, when you couldn't be gaurenteed of even getting the right song, never mind the quality.

Create a quality service and people will pay money. Again, look at Steam. Does it need describing? Is downloading a crrack off some backwater torrent site that's probably riddled with viruses and malware really better than paying a few $$$ on sale for a Steam version?

On the other hand, people will go to lengths to avoid moronic DRM that won't let you play a single player game if the servers are offline (Ubisoft and Blizzard, for other examples).

Oh, so...I can steal the gas for my car if I can't quite afford it this month?

Seriously, video games are a luxury item, not an entitlement. I've heard plenty of arguments for and against piracy, and some of them make a deal of sense. "Have pity on the poor people unable to buy a video game. It's okay if they steal it" is definitely not one of the dumber arguments I've heard.

@Higurashinoni @downloadthefile @Vienreich No, it's not a stalemate, because one side is protecting itself from the other. Consumers can protect themselves not by stealing, but just not consuming a product. Unfortunately the children who steal don't see not playing a game as a reasonable alternative.

I'm a little confused. Are these ideas they plan to implement in a patch? Or do they actually expect people to pay for larger cities, overpasses and terraforming?

If it's free then I might actually play this game again. however if they pitch this as an expansion pack then I'll never play again, and never look at another Maxis title in the future.

I have been waiting for the Mac version for ages, but after all the issues I now see how lucky I am.

2 reasons for not buying until offline play is available:

- Multiplayers is very nice when (if) you have people playing that share the same ideas. for the region. Otherwise, developing a region on your own is the only way to do it.

- I'm play mostly when I'm travelling as I'm not always connected to the internet, playing on the road would be impossible.

MP should be an option. Without offline playability, I just won't buy the game.

a wise decision.

Unfortunately, that's not all that's wrong with the game. The agent-based simulation that was supposed to make up for how drastically the game was scaled back from previous SimCities doesn't even work on its own terms.

I wish a real sim city fan would buy up Maxis and make the most epic sequel to Sim City 4 ever....like fully in depth, with amazing AI, amazing transport......just make it in the vein of Sim City 4 not this travesty.
