[UPDATE] EA has now published a post on its Support site that explains all four games will go offline on July 14. No refunds will be available for any unused currency. Read the full post to get all the details.

The original story is below.

Electronic Arts announced today that it is shutting down a handful of its PC free-to-play games, including Battlefield Heroes, Battlefield Play4Free, FIFA World, and Need for Speed World.

No Caption Provided

EA Studios executive vice president Patrick Soderlund wrote in a blog post today that, while free-to-play PC game Star Wars: The Old Republic is still going strong, the same can't be said for others.

"Some of our other PC free-to-play games are not as popular as they once were," said. "So we find ourselves announcing the tough decision today that we are stopping development and winding down support for four PC free-to-play titles."

The affected games, which will officially go offline in about 90 days, are:

  • Battlefield Heroes
  • Battlefield Play4Free
  • FIFA World
  • and Need for Speed World

A blog post on the Battlefield Heroes website reveals that the game will official close on July 14. Players who have a balance of in-game currency on their account are encouraged to spend it. Those who don't do so before the official shutdown will be out of luck, as no refunds will be available.

Effectively immediately, sign-ups for Battlefield Heroes have ended and existing players can no longer purchase in-game currency.

Logistics details for the closure of Battlefield Play4Free, FIFA World, and Need for Speed World are not available.

Soderlund went on to say that in the time since these games were released--in some cases that was more than five years ago--the way people play games "has changed dramatically." He said these titles were once "pioneering experiences" and thanked fans for their support of them.

"While we say farewell to these free-to-play titles in the next few months, we are always exploring new concepts and ways to bring great games to more players around the world," Soderlund said.

After the shutdown of these four games, EA will still have two major free-to-play games for PC: Star Wars: The Old Republic and Commander & Conquer: Tiberium Alliances. Beyond PC, EA has a large catalog of free-to-play games for mobile devices, including The Simpsons: Tapped Out and The Sims: FreePlay, among others.

On the subject of Star Wars: The Old Republic, Soderlund said the game "continues to have a very enthusiastic and growing player community." He added that EA will add more "story-driven" content to the game later this year.

Its obvious FIFA & NFS World are affect the sales of their paid franchise. They are earning so much already why cant they just shave a bit of profits and maintain these free games?

@ilovenfsw what really is not fair is that they put out a good game like NFSW and then didn't actually do anything to it other than add pay to win cars no new maps or dynamics notta for years, hell they couldn't even get off there asses and make all controllers supported...

I'm so sad that NFSW closes so for that...I'm selling all my cars except the most valuable ones and my first one, and tunning them into beasts!

Oh and...if you keep the game open(low possibilities) do something with hackers.

BB, Need for Speed World...see you in the heaven of the best F2P games ;(

PLEASE NFSW DO NOT SHUT DOWN

I WILL GIVE YOU 5 REASONS WHY AND 5 WAYS TO IMPROVE THE GAME PLEASE

5 REASONS WHY NFSW SHOULDN'T SHUT DOWN:

1.ONLY REALISTIC RACING GAME WITH REAL CARS

2.MY FAVOURITE AND LOTS OF PEOPLES FAVOURITE GAME

3.NICE GRAPHICS AND GAMEPLAY

4.PLENTY OF DIFFERENT CARS AND VINILYS TO CHOSE FROM

5.HAPPIEST GAME COMMUNITY I EVER SCENE :)......:(

5 WAYS TO IMPROVE THE GAME:

1. SELL CARS AND PARTS FOR CHEAPER (MCLAREN F1 COST $300 IN REAL LIFE MONEY IN GAME WHY NOT $30)

IF YOU DO THIS YOU WILL HAVE MORE PEOPLE TO BUY THINGS IN GAME AND MORE PEOPLE WILL BE WILLING TO PLAY ESPECIALLY IF U MAKE MORE CARS AVAILABLE TO PEOPLE WHO PLAY FOR FREE AND LOWER PRICES LIKE COME ONE $2 000 000 IN GAME CASH FOR A LEXUS LFA ITS NOT EVEN 2 MILLION IN REAL LIFE.

2. MAKE IT MORE FUN LIKE FIXING STUPID ISSUES LIKE THE SERVER ERRORS OR ADDING MORE STREETS AND RACES(ALSO MORE CARS EVEN IF ITS HONDA'S ). THIS WILL MAKE YOUR GAME MORE FUN FOR THE PEOPLE PLAYING WHICH MAKES PEOPLE WANNA KEEP PLAYING THE GAME WHICH MAKES THEM SPEND MORE MONEY AND IT WILL DRAW MORE PEOPLE IN THE GAME.

3. (MY PERSONAL OPINION) IT WAS FUN WHEN THERE WHERE COPS ON THE STREET IN FREE ROM, YES IT WOULD GET ANNOYING FOR SOME BUT IT TAKES AWAY THE BORING FOR ALL.

4.(MAKING THE WORLD A BETTER PLACE) TAKE TIME TO MAKE THE REAL WORLD AND THE IN GAME WORLD A BETTER PLACE MAYBE ON SPECIAL DAYS YOU HAVE PEOPLE DONATE MONEY FOR A CHANCE TO WIN PRIZES

AND FOR EXAMPLE LETS SAY HALF THAT MONEY GOES TO CHARITY. THIS WILL MAKE PLAYERS HAPPY BECAUSE THEY WIN NICE PRIZES YOU GUYS WIN BECAUSE YOU GET MONEY AND THE WORLD WINS BECAUSE YOU HELP WITH CHARITY.

5.(ALSO MY PERSONAL OPINION)HAVE SPECIALLY DESIGNED RACES FOR DIFFERENT CARS SO PEOPLE CAN HAVE TOURNAMENTS, SO PRETTY MUCH TOURNAMENT RACES ALONG SIDE THE SPRINTS CIRCUITS AND ETC.

THIS ONCE AGAIN WILL BOOST THE NUMBER IN PLAYERS AND THE MONEY YOU GET!!

I hope they make a new NFSW, the game has such big potential and it was one of a kind... well aside from half the players using hacks..

All I want is an online racing game with real cars and tons of customization, I don't care if it's a F2P or not!

I will miss you my sweet RX-7..

Yeah, although the game was a buggy mess I enjoyed my time on it. Feel a bit ripped off though after spending money on my ztune r34 :(

But mate, try out forza horizon 2 for xbox one. Much better customisation (up to 3000 layers of stickers on each side of your car) and the game is playable offline, and the servers probably won't shut down for a very, very, very long time.

More cars than nfs world, too. And they're all real :)

Need for speed world has been on life support since 2013, there were no updates, patches, and no new cars.

Too bad the game has potentials if been handled right.

Just release the server side or sell it so people can continue playing these games on their own servers or rentals. Theres got to be money in these games, you just don't allow players to mod or have any control of the community. You have such a good opportunity to do something for the people who put money in your pockets, and you fail every time.

Dammit, BFH was so much fun when it first came out. There was nothing quite like it. A cartoony, team-based third-person shooter, with skills and vehicles...

And then it became P2W and everyone stopped playing.

This is part of the reason why I don't like F2P games, you don't get to control when to stop playing it. I'm currently playing Shadow Man (1999) that I got at a GoG sale and it's great that I can play a game 16 years after release.

Haven't played an EA game since Battlefield 2. This re-affirms my decision to avoid them and Origin. There is no reason these games couldn't live on with community run servers. EA's greed is very obvious here.

This should be illegal. So they milked millions from poor saps, and now are pulling the plug. Sure, most don't care....but bet there is a handful of people that pumped a lot of coin into this game.

@john_matrix_007: Your account was probably hacked. One day FIFA 15 appeared on my game library, without me buying it, than I contacted EA, their solution, after a month, was banning all my game library and account access due hacking activity. After two hours of internet chat with an EA employer I was able to prove I was inocent and got all my access back.

Some of these games were pretty fun to play in their days, Battlefield Heroes in particular. I've also played C&C Tiberium Alliances for some time, took me till level 30 for a GDI and Nod base to get bored and it was pretty fun to play with others. But the game has gotten boring with too few updates, other then opening new worlds and upgrades.
