EA clarifies recent offline games comment

Peter Moore confirms that not every EA game will require an online connection, says free-to-play not coming to every EA franchise.

In a blog post today, Electronic Arts COO Peter Moore clarified comments he made at Gamescom recently about moving away from offline games.

No Caption Provided

Moore said it is a fact that EA no longer makes "offline" games, but clarified that not every game EA ships will require an Internet connection.

"Many, if not most, of our games include single-player, offline modes that you can play entirely without an Internet connection, if you so choose," Moore said. "We know that’s something many of our players want, and we will continue to deliver it."

Maxis' upcoming The Sims 4 will not require an Internet connection.

Moore also addressed "confusion" regarding EA's plans for free-to-play games going forward. At Gamescom, he suggested that every major EA franchise will have a free-to-play option. Today, he said this is not the case, though the company is evaluating options for the future.

"I also see confusion about our plans for free-to-play games. Many of our most popular franchises for PCs and mobile--including Battlefield, Need for Speed, FIFA, Star Wars: The Old Republic, Plants vs. Zombies, and now Madden NFL, to name a few--already offer free-to-play experiences. Command & Conquer is another exciting new free-to-play game coming online later this year," Moore said. "However, not all of EA's games will offer a free-to-play mode."

"We will continue to explore new free-to-play experiences for our franchises when we believe there is gamer interest and a cool new game we can build," he added. "But of course, we will continue to deliver award-winning core gaming experiences on all of these franchises."

EA and Microsoft are competing to see who can shoot themselves in the foot more often.

@TheLeftHandDoom I actually like how MS has fixed their practices since the E3 debacle. I know all the cool kids hate on Microsoft now, but I'm actually looking forward to their console.

@JBStone1981 They didn't fix anything and those features they said could not be undone that they undone can still be switched back on if MS decide to.

@JBStone1981 @TheLeftHandDoom If the practices were so bad, why would MS introduce them in the first place?

@AvatarMan96 @JBStone1981 @TheLeftHandDoom Is this a joke?

If the practices of the big financial companies before the collapse were so bad, why did they introduce them in the first place?

Hubris, stupidity, pick one.

This is why COOs and CEOs need to go back to their boardrooms, shut the eff up, and let PR people do the talking. These companies, for some stupid reason, seem to think that they can go about their day talking off the cuff as if cohesive strategies and clear messages don't matter. It's like they think gamers are so unsophisticated that they don't need to be treated like every other consumer.

When are they going to stop assuming we're all stupid?

@Zloth2 @JBStone1981 But that's my point! Why are these guys speaking directly to the media. In what other industry do we talk to CEOs and other corporate stiff with this regularity? EA needs to leave the promotion to the people who know how to do it. Half of the things they say aren't even that bad, but they convey them in such a way that their message gets misinterpreted. I mean, this is a perfect example. All this guy was trying to say was that their games will all focus heavily on the connected side, but he made it sound as if all EA games would require always-on.

The glorious thing about EA is, I've already started boycotting them after DA 2 and ME 3 sucked the big one. They can go do whatever the hell they want and it wont bother me. More companies that screw up, the less games I have to buy. I'll save hundreds every year!

Previous quotes have now been redacted To read only: "the"

It sounds like their plan is to shoehorn in MP into every game. Seeing as how games have only 100% of their budget, it sounds like something is gonna have to be lost in the budget to afford that online part. Don't get me wrong, I'm not against MP, I'm just against MP for the sake of MP...

@---Cipher--- Yeah most of the MP in SP games are really lacking. I see that the extra budget really would have been better spent for SP assets.

Fact is, when you dedicate resources to multiplayer, you take away from resources that could have been put on single player. Dead Space 3, Mass Effect 3, SimCity and Plants vs Zombies 2. All the latest entries in their respective franchises, also with the largest focus on online features in their franchises. Also the shittest games in those franchises.

No, not free to play! We will just make sure all of our titles include Micro-transactions! We found that customers like being able to buy their way out of difficult situations by unbalancing a game if they have the cash! Like Dead Space 3!

The ability for you to be able to interact with those franchises on a free-to-play basis is going to be part-and-parcel with every major franchise we do now," Moore said. "And that's very important to Electronic Arts."

I didn't misunderstand this: He said flat out "free-to-play is going to be part of EVERY major franchise we do now." Now he's saying that isn't the case and people misundertood him.

I guess anything with 'EA', and 'online', makes people see red and lose reasoning.

I find it funny how companies like EA and Microsoft always have to do damage control after they make a statement.

It's like they're always surprised to find out that consumers don't like to be fucked in the ass.

Wonder when they'll learn.

@skayj2 My guess is EA in some way bullied Microsoft into the forced online etc and after all the negative feedback Microsoft fixed their errors whereas here EA isn't trying to fix a damn thing just reword it to try to confuse ppl. EA wasn't rated worst company in America for no reason after all.

"Oh hey sorry you totally misunderstood what we said, so allow us to clarify. When we said we don't do offline games any more, what we meant was that we're a bunch of dishonest crooks and you can't trust a word out of our mouth. Not that it matters, because weak-willed gamers will keep buying our games no matter what we do to deter them."

Fixed that for you EA.
