EA CEO thinking about virtual reality experiences, but not necessarily for the Oculus Rift

EA is thinking about how to get you inside a video game, maybe with a hologram.

Electronic Arts CEO Andrew Wilson said that the publisher is thinking about what kind of virtual reality experiences it wants to deliver, but didn't say for sure if Oculus Rift maker Oculus VR would be the partner.

"The thing I challenge my team to [do] right now is, 'Listen, there's clearly a desire to add a modality of play to the three we're currently focused on,” Wilson said during a panel at the SXSW convention in Austin, Texas, Polygon reports.

According to Wilson, the three modalities are “lean back,” meaning the living room, console experience, “lean in,” meaning the PC, specifically real-time strategy and role-playing games, and “lean over,” as in leaning over your phone or other mobile devices.

Wilson said that when he looks at VR devices he sees a new kind of “get in” modality, which could be delivered through a headset like the Oculus Rift (or maybe Sony’s VR device), but also possibly with “some hologram that evolves out of your living room floor.”

Wilson said he doesn't know who the technology partner that will deliver that experience will be, but that he’s challenging his team to think about the “experiences that deliver on the promise and the fantasy of being inside a video game."

A veteran of EA Sports, Andrew Wilson was appointed CEO of EA back in September in 2013.

I'm already inside video games, or rather, they're inside of me, in my mind, but I don't mind them trying to advance that experience.

Electronic Arts CEO Andrew Wilson could give Ridiculously Photogenic Guy a run for his money, lol.

The best thing for EA would be to decentralize into smaller publishers. One for sports, one for shooters, one for everything else. Then we can watch them trip over their own shoes because it's such a terrible company.

It will be just like Origin, 7 years too late with a quarter of the functionality. Way to go EA!

Sony has had these types of glasses out for the last 5yrs already and people have mixed feelings. They're too heavy, they give the wearer headaches, the sound isn't that great and, most of all, they're way to expensive.

Though to be fair, I think they were glasses that gave the impression that you were watching a 60" 3D tv with surround sound. I don't think it was vr. But if they couldn't get that system right, which is easier than vr, what makes them think they can do this? Especially if it's ridiculously expensive (because Sony is still under the impression that their 2nd rate electronics are cutting edge and demand a premium price tag).

*facepalm* So they want in, but they don;t want to co-operate with the existing players. They want to make their own VR! With blackjack! And hookers! Only the blackjack and hookers will be pre-order and Day 1 DLC options.

so we kick the "social" fad out the window to focus on the "VR" one. I have faith in oculus rift because the people who concieved it poored their hearts into it and I believe they wanted to avoid making a gimmick. But EA, EA nowadays is in close reletions with MS who released the Kinect and Kinect 2. both of them marvelous devices that were treated as gimmicks by MS with only poor cashgrab shovelware and the only time their potential was tapped was from third parties.

When EA says "virtual experiences", all I can assume is that their real mind set is "Okey, Oculus rift is getting popular and VR is back on the spotlight. We can capitalise on that and make a gimmick for a quick cash grab".

I rest my case

@PETERAKO People "pour" their hearts into a lot of things that fail miserably...Let's just see what happens...Myself, I couldn't care less about VR.

@PETERAKO While I hate EA as much as the next guy, I do appreciate the attention it might bring the VR in general. Even if they were to create a gimmick, given EA's vast marketing and PR power it would still get loads of people thinking more about VR, and potentially bring them to Oculus Rift after being disappointed with the aforementioned gimmick.

There were so many failures in the past to bring VR to popularity, it's not even funny. So, yeah, OR will need all the help it can get if it is to truly take off, and I would welcome any help whether it'd be from Sony or even EA.

<< LINK REMOVED >> I haven't seen the movie (though now I want to because of what you said), but I bet whatever hologram technology comes out within the next 5 years will be just a gimmick or novelty. It'll be like the first 3D TVs, which is neat, but not yet ready for prime time.

EA is like the Seth MacFarlane of the Gaming Industry. Every. Single. Thing. that comes out of their mouth is the epitome of douchebaggery. Nobody cares, EA. You're nothing more than a cancer that buys up good developers.

I look forward to a day where good developers realize they could kickstart their own projects and get more profit/funding than a publisher would ever be able to do for them.
