EA CEO resigns

John Riccitiello to leave FIFA, Battlefield publisher March 30 after six years as top executive; search committee for replacement to consider internal and external candidates.

Electronic Arts chief executive officer John Riccitiello will resign from his position at the FIFA and Battlefield publisher after six years effective March 30, the company announced today. In addition, he will no longer be a member of the publisher's board of directors.

No Caption Provided

The EA board of directors has appointed longtime EA executive Larry Probst as executive chairman of the publisher while a search is conducted for Riccitiello's permanent replacement. Probst has been in a leadership position at EA since 1991 and was CEO from 1991 to 2007. The Board will consider internal and external candidates, the company said, with the help of a "leading executive search firm."

"We thank John for his contributions to EA since he was appointed CEO in 2007, especially the passion, dedication and energy he brought to the Company every single day," Probst said in a statement. "John has worked hard to lead the Company through challenging transitions in our industry, and was instrumental in driving our very significant growth in digital revenues. We appreciate John's leadership and the many important strategic initiatives he has driven for the Company. We have mutually agreed that this is the right time for a leadership transition."

Riccitiello offered his own comments on his decision to leave EA. He praised the publisher and its employees and said he is optimistic about the company's future with next-generation consoles on the horizon.

"I am proud of what we have accomplished together, and after six years I feel it is the right time for me pass the baton and let new leadership take the Company into its next phase of innovation and growth."

"EA is an outstanding company with creative and talented employees, and it has been an honor to serve as the Company’s CEO," Riccitiello said in a statement. "I am proud of what we have accomplished together, and after six years I feel it is the right time for me pass the baton and let new leadership take the Company into its next phase of innovation and growth. I remain very optimistic about EA's future; there is a world class team driving the Company’s transition to the next generation of game consoles.

The internal memo Riccitiello sent to Probst regarding his resignation was published by the Securities and Exchange Commission. It states that the "tough" decision to leave was a matter of being accountable to shareholders.

Mr. Larry Probst
Chairman Electronic Arts

Dear Larry,

"I hereby offer my resignation as CEO of Electronic Arts effective with the end of our Fiscal Year 13 on March 30, 2013.
This is a tough decision, but it all comes down to accountability. The progress EA has made on transitioning to digital games and services is something I’m extremely proud of. However, it currently looks like we will come in at the low end of, or slightly below, the financial guidance we issued in January, and we have fallen short of the internal operating plan we set one year ago. EA’s shareholders and employees expect better and I am accountable for the miss.

I have been at the helm as EA’s CEO for six years and served as COO for nearly seven years starting in 1997. I know this company well, and I care deeply about its future success. I leave knowing EA is a great company, with an enormously talented group of leaders and the strongest slate of games in the industry.

I could not be more proud of our company’s games, from Battlefield and FIFA, to The Simpsons: Tapped Out and Real Racing 3. We have built many great franchises that will serve the company well in FY14 and beyond. In particular, I am confident that the investments we have made in games for next-generation consoles will put EA in a strong leadership position for many years ahead.

In offering my resignation, my goal is to allow the talented leaders at EA a clean start on FY14. I look forward to working with you in the coming weeks on an effective leadership transition. I’m extremely honored to have led this company and proud to have worked with all the great people at Electronic Arts."

Sincerely,
John Riccitiello

As part of Riccitiello's separation agreement with EA, he will continue to draw a salary for 24 months.

Despite rough business model and lack of PR, I think he's a great CEO,,

- at his hand people finally be able to see high profile and focused IPs, (Dragon Age, Mirror's Edge, Dead Space comes to mind)

- EA partner,,

- not too dependent with licensed titles and Steam as their digital distributor.

- he managed to push Origin and Frostbite 2 Engine as their primary platform.

- since the launch of Origin, EA stocks is higher than Sony.

that's quite an achievement. compare that with Konami, Capcom, Square Enix, Activision, which basically done nothing in the past few years.

Do people aware what EA doing pre-2007 ??

They near bankrupt, and most of their line-up are junk.

@Ladiesman17 i didnt pre-order, play the beta, buy or go anywhere near the new Simcity because it required Origin.

Origin is to Steam as EA is to Valve as The War-Z is to Day-Z

your argument is invalid.

@Ladiesman17 Stocks are higher because he hired a CFO to creatively display the books in order to get more investors and a PR Team who's sole job is to advertise and troll various forums.

Go check when EA last paid dividends and how much is was I ask you..

I really wish GS had active chat rooms for gamers per topic, that would make this site stand out beyond any review site. GS if you're listening, THIS would be a great move! Comment boards like this are great, but IT would be amazing to have chat features!

This man and his decisions are a huge reason why the industry is in the toilet right now. I'm not talking about the games themselves, but how the gaming industry has become all about pure, unapologetic greed; day 1 DLC, disc locked content, DRM, ONLINE PASSES. . . I could go on and on about all the bullsh!t this man and others like him in the industry have proliferated over the past 5-years. I liked when playing games was honest, good fun, now I can't play a game without scumbags like Johnny reaching for my wallet everytime I turn on my consoles and PC. . .

@wilhelmalexis It's fired "I resigned cause i didn't do my job well enough" is fired in the corporate world hence no spot on the board(unlike last CEO).

The 24 months of pay are to make sure he looks like he went willingly and doesn't jump on board another company's ship right away.

One man does not a corporate culture make. I suspect little if anything will change at EA over this move.

I do find the timing curious, however. Did this happen because of the SimCity fiasco, or was the writing on the wall weeks ago?

Hmm. Seems he managed to turn losses into profit again, but its not anything convincing. Also W. Buffet doesn't have any major shares in this so its probably not worth investing in :D.

He has very dead eyes. That smile in that picture doesn't even come close to reaching his eyes. Might mean nothing; I have a flat affect so I probably look like that too. But damn does he look creepy. Still not sure if he ruined things at EA or if he is just a sacrificial lamb. Probably the latter. But he does "look" like a sleezeball. Who knows.

This was inevitable. I remember this guy coming on a long time ago talking about how he was going to take risks and put an emphasis on quality and have a very pro-gamer attitude and approach. Damn near everything he brought to the table or championed was a total failure.

Experimental new IP like Mirror's Edge flopped hard, EA Partners was such a good deal for devs and bad for EA that it was unsustainable for the company to continue with, rescuing Brutal Legend for industry legend Tim Schafer ended up being another commercial flop, him greenlighting Criterion to make a crapton of free DLC to see if that would help Burnout Paradise just ended up with fan revolt when paid DLC came out and ultimately the game sold to a level where Criterion no longer gets to make Burnout games, he paid "gamer's value" for Pandemic and BioWare rather than what cold business logic would dictate and that was a bust with one of the companies (Pandemic) taking the $$$ and cranking out crap and the other making some good games that were either failures of epic proportions (Old Republic) or extremely well reviewed but didn't have infinite endings so people voted EA the worst company on the planet (Mass Effect 3), and the list goes on and on.

Meanwhile Bobby Kotick has always taken a business > gamers approach and the result was massive success while Ricci went gamers > business and it completely blew up in his face.

@Senor_Kami So you think what ACTIVSION is doing is so WONDERFUL, and their Business Practices haven't blown up in their face?

Is that why we get Copy/Paste: Modern Redundancy Every year? Isn't Diablo 3 Wonderful? Activision isjust as bad if not WORSE than EA in just about every respect.

Bobby Kotick should be Blacklisted from this Industry and never allowed within 500 Yards of even a place that SELLS games ever again.

As for Pandemic and Bioware, they were great companies that created great games, until EA bought them and RAN THEM INTO THE GROUND.

Oh Please, go put on your Call Of Duty Feedbag and pitter away In Daiblo 3's RMAH.

Somebody, PLEASE GIVE Us Our Industry back.

Back in the day, I thought Ricc was the man. Especially when he brought Bioware under the EA umbrella. But then Bioware started going downhill with each release. Now...I find myself wishing Bioware had stayed independent. :'(

@SavoyPrime EA has been destroying companies like Pandemic and Bioware LONG before those purchases even took place. Look up the history of Interplay and Origin. Ricc was NEVER the Man. He's always been Emperor Palpatine.

EA has been the Bane of this Industry for nearly 20 years now.
