E3 returns to LA

Organizers schedule 2008 event for July 15-17 at the Los Angeles Convention Center, but say the show of old is not coming back.

Though some naysayers predicted at the end of the 2007 E3 Media and Business Summit that there would be no 2008 event, the Entertainment Software Association today announced that its flagship trade show would indeed be returning next year.

Not only will the 2008 E3 Media and Business Summit take place July 15-17, but it will also be returning to its old stomping grounds. After a fling in nearby Santa Monica, the ESA is returning E3 to Los Angeles, specifically to the Los Angeles Convention Center, the cavernous home of the gigantic spectacle that used to be the Electronic Entertainment Expo.

Despite the change in venue, the 2008 show will remain a smaller-scale show. The ESA has said that once again the event will be an invite-only affair, and while the group didn't specifically address whether or not there would be an exhibit show floor, it did say the summit "will not feature the large trade show environment of previous years." Instead the show will focus on press events and business meetings.

Some aspects of the old E3 are expected to make their return. ESA president Michael Gallagher skipped the traditional state-of-the-industry address last year because he was still playing catchup, having just been appointed to his position two months prior to the event. At the time, an ESA representative said Gallagher would be delivering such a speech at the 2008 event. The E3 conference program, a series of lectures and panels on emerging industry concerns and other topics, was also scuttled last year, but the ESA today hinted it would be returning in some form.

"Our program of high-level meetings, networking and personal dialogue, and industry-shaping panel discussions will capture the explosive growth we have seen in 2007 and lay the foundation for the 2008 video game marketplace," Gallagher said in a statement.

As in previous years, both ESA member and nonmember companies will be able to participate in the show.

For the love of god, just bring the old show back and deal with it. It's SUPPOSED to be a spectacle. Seems like this sanitization of E3 was only done because of that decibel level fight between two booths the last year before they turned it into Electronic Soccer Mom Entertainment Expo.

I felt that the old E3 was more of a "What free stuff can I get/win" rather than focusing on GAMES. My first E3 I spent my hours checking out games from everybody, but as it got bigger, louder, more flashy.. my love for it changed. I began hunting all the free goods I can get and I just stopped paying attention to the games. I'm glad when they moved to Santa Monica and even now as they are revamping E3 to its OLD roots I hope to never see E3 go Hollywood again..... somethings wrong when u see Gary Coleman in E3 -_-

@Wolverine1701: Yeah I'm sure you know personally that the film industry is filled with elitists. It's all dooms day talk with people whining about E3 changing. Get over it, it's better this way.

All the fluff and nonsense from previous years was just that. Last years E3 showed us more games and we got more information then the past several years combined. It's a business trade show about games, developers, publishers and related aspects...not a 3-ring circus where the ones with the most money come off on top.

the video game industry has to be careful, else it turn into the elitist film industry. As noisy and overgrown as the old E3 was, it allowed everybody to see what was going on, and that's what this industry needs. Yeah, everybody wants to see what crap hollywood is putting out next, but let's see the creativity in the indies, and let's keep it open to the general public. I mean, that's what was great about E3 back in its hayday.

Hell, why would they want to make it about the games and gamers again, why not make it a three day meeting?

I don't mind a smaller, more equally portioned fair. Letting the big companies buy out vast swaths of space, said companies making huge/noisy displays, and every bottem-of-the-ladder grunt in the industry allowed entry is all what made the old E3 more bloated than big. Trying again in a better venue is for the best. Hopefully, they will iron out all the issues this one suffered and create a show we can get excited about. That said, I will miss the booth babes.

I'm glad there is still an E3, and I dont mind if it is more business oriented, I just hope that there will be atleast a small element of the previews that used to be in the old ones. I love watching it to find out about the newest games :)

I miss the spectacle of it, but I guess game manufacturers are trying to be a bit more "grown up" about things nowadays. Leave the playing around to the consumers, I suppose is the route forward.

I was never able to attend the conference in the past and found the smaller scale to be much better at providing information on all of the games. There have been many times where a smaller game didn't get the press time because of the smaller booth and as a result we were not able to find about what was really the point of the show, the games. I was sad that I would never be able to attend the show in its previous format but with the amount of games there it would of been next to impossible to look at everything.
