E3 2020 Is Officially Canceled Due To Coronavirus Concerns

After sources suggested as much, the ESA has officially canceled this year's E3 due to the coronavirus.

E3 2020 has officially been canceled and will not take place this June as previously scheduled. The ESA, which is responsible for putting on the annual convention, shared the news today following several reports, including GameSpot's, that such an announcement was imminent. In its place, companies like Xbox and Ubisoft are already making plans to hold digital events, although details and dates are still sparse.

"After careful consultation with our member companies regarding the health and safety of everyone in our industry--our fans, our employees, our exhibitors and our longtime E3 partners--we have made the difficult decision to cancel E3 2020, scheduled for June 9-11 in Los Angeles," the ESA said in a statement.

"Following increased and overwhelming concerns about the COVID-19 virus, we felt this was the best way to proceed during such an unprecedented global situation. We are very disappointed that we are unable to hold this event for our fans and supporters. But we know it’s the right decision based on the information we have today."

The ESA went on to say it would be in touch with both exhibitors and attendees regarding "full refunds." Additionally, it says it is "exploring options with our members to coordinate an online experience to showcase industry announcements and news in June 2020." No further details have been shared on that front as of yet, but it did also confirm that plans for E3 2021 will move ahead "as a reimagined event that brings fans, media and the industry together in a showcase that celebrates the global video game industry."

Xbox, Ubisoft, and Limited Run Games have confirmed plans to either explore or host their own digital events. Limited Run will still host a press conference on June 8 as previously scheduled, while Nintendo has responded but not confirmed any specific plans. We'll be rounding up companies' reactions to E3's cancelation and what they intend to do as more information is shared. In the meantime, check out our look back at E3's biggest moments.

Original Story: E3 2020 will no longer go ahead, multiple sources have told GameSpot. Rumors swirled today that the consumer and trade show would soon be officially canceled amidst dwindling support from video game publishers and platform holders, as well as ongoing safety concerns due to coronavirus. Several sources have confirmed the news to GameSpot, but the ESA has still not officially announced the cancellation.

The first rumblings came from a tweet made by publisher Devolver Digital that encouraged people to cancel their E3 plans, flights, and accommodation. Since then, Ars Technica also published a report stating the cancellation is imminent. Speaking to GameSpot, multiple sources with knowledge on the matter have also indicated this to be the case.

This would mark the first time the annual event skipped a year. GameSpot has reached out to the ESA for an official statement.

This is the latest in a long line of major global events cancelled over concerns relating to COVID-19 (coronavirus). GDC 2020 was postponed, while other cancelled events include SXSW and Emerald City Comic Con. As of March 6, there were still plans to continue with E3 2020, but that has since changed.

Even before it became clear that the coronavirus was likely to lead to the event's cancellation, E3 2020 looked to be in bad shape. PlayStation was not planning on attending, Geoff Keighley had dropped out of hosting the E3 Colosseum, and iam8bit had stepped away from its creative director position.

Here are lists of every publisher that was attending E3 2020. The cancellation of E3 2020 will have a major impact on how these companies announce and market their games.

We'll continue to update with more details--including how announcements scheduled for E3 will be delivered--as they become available.

This is going to be an EXCELLENT case study on the destructiveness of the media and it's ability to sow panic, economic damage and social upheaval.

For an upper respiratory virus.

Anyways in-regards to the Corona virus we are at 9 percent at stage one, that's economic impact stage 1, stage two is pandemic alert, some countries are applying stage 2 now, but the world health organisation differs.

Stage 3 would be catestrophic like Harvey Weinstein career and the E3 event.

I see this Coronavirus more important than the E3 and after it is over (if it does die out) we can go back to almost what we were doing. The economy is really hurting right now with this virus hanging on. Be safe everyone and it is now really important to do one of the tasks that may help, wash your hands for 20 seconds or more.

Daz greeeaaatttt, now how are we gonna get excited all in one day/sitting? Gamespot should put a list of all digital events that are released & keep track of em.

On the other end, I feel sorry for GameStop even further now....get your Corono infested used games no more...it's all digital for me now bee atches!

Apparently something about E3's mechanisms encouraged publishers to share fake trailers and news. Something to do with how the ESA makes money off the show. Supposedly this was a long time coming and publishers are just taking advantage.

Mind you this is just speculation from some video I saw, but I can see how the ESA's practices around the conference would push publishers to falsely advertise.

It's funny because: if you're a forigner and travel to America to go to E3, and do contract cov-19 you'll be contained and the hospital administration in a California hospital is way over $3000 per nite, and you will be contained indefinitely for upwards of two weeks bases on the counties rules and regulations.

So if you are traveling from Europe (ban in place)

Africa (also ban but more lack security rating banned indefinitely til Donald trump's term)

So yeah your choice is:

Option 1:

$1000 E3 administration, (plus right now airfares are cheap as hell, free rebooking with most international air line's, maybe upgrade to first class for nothing doubt anyone will be on the plane except you, but it's free if you're a journalist just good luck and God speed ) and a cancelled notification on the front of the exhibition with refunds, atleast you can watch Harvey Weinstein burn in hell lot 22 studio at universal studios.

Option 2:

$3000 per night hospital bill at legendary California hospital (that I have never been to hope you're insured or your more then fu@#£, regardless of age or weaknesses because those infected can stil infect with withh out signs don't ask me I'm not a doctor) anyways here's a info lesson on how you can spend your time if you were actually going to E3 from legendary wiseful Tom hanks:

Seriously? Because of a flu that's only dangerous to people with atrocious hygiene, or old people who are weak against diseases anyways? This mass hysteria is getting way out of hand.

@randallsilver: False. It's actually highly contagious, more so than the average flu, and there is quite a delay before symptoms appear which is what makes it so annoying.

However, it's still a type of flu which means your main concern is managing YOUR immunity rather than fighting a bug. If you can do that, you can walk into a room full of sick people and not get sick (my mom does it all the time being a doctor and all). Stop eating so much sugar and drinking so much coffee, get good sleep, and take Vitamin C sups (REAL VC; make sure you're not getting cheap shit). Oregano oil is also great, but it's the nuclear option so don't take it if you have any kind of heartburn related problem.

Source: my mom, doctor, virologist, and researcher. Also, I had to type all of her SARS operating procedure manuals.

Kinda ironic that COVID-19 saved ESA from getting the shame of focusing celebs & influencers for this year's E3.

Next step would/will be to push back release of the next gen consoles to 2021 or even farther and watch their MSRP increase upon release.

They'll say that the Coronavirus is the cause...
I think they're marketting fear all over the place with that "Corona-oh-it's-not-even-more-dangerous-than-the-common-flu" thingie.

They anticipate shortages which most likely won't happen and encourage everyone to stock in masses to create a rarity to rise the selling prices!

It already began in computing...
I work in a computer store and we've seen most of our providers increase some of their prices pretending they'll run out of stock eventually.
i7 CPUs had their retail price increased by 50-60$ lately.

What a scam...

@silv3rst0rm The share markets have plummeted, factories in China have been shut down and governments are pumping in $BILLIONS to help stimulate the economy. Doesn't seem like a scam to me.

It's disappointing news , but understandable. This probably won't change much, everyone will just have their own digital events. But with nobody being connected to a singular expo we'll have to rely on GS and other gaming news sites to gather the events up.

At least it's because of covid and not because "not enough" companies are showing up. It's good it's coming back next year though. Really hope ms, sony, and such put together they're own great shows.

@kgsg-19-2: I doubt they will if they are worried about employees getting sick. They will do an online thing most likely. Pity they can't deliver new consoles digitally though as that whole thing is going to be a train wreck now if this continues over the next few months.
