E3 2019 - Final Fantasy 7 Remake Will Span Two Discs, Square Enix Confirms

Midgar just got bigger.

GameSpot may get a commission from retail offers.

Square Enix's E3 2019 press conference started with an in-depth presentation of Final Fantasy VII Remake for PlayStation 4. The publisher gave an overview of the game's revamped combat system, which mixes real-time action with the familiar but altered Active Time Battle system. We also learned that the game will be massive, featuring two Blu-ray discs' worth of gameplay content--and that this initial release won't cover the entirety of Final Fantasy VII.

It seems the sheer amount of content is why it'll take up so much space. Square Enix had previously said the Final Fantasy VII remake would come in multiple parts or episodes. As producer Yoshinori Kitase explained during an E3 press preview, however, the first "game" is "set in the eclectic city of Midgar and presents a fully standalone gaming experience," effectively making it the first leg of the original version of FFVII. Kitase said Square Enix isn't sure yet how many episodes Final Fantasy VII Remake will require, or how long development of additional episodes will take.

That wasn't the only Final Fantasy VII news to come out of the press conference; Square Enix also showed off an extended version of the trailer that was revealed during June 9's Final Fantasy concert. This one gave us our first look at Tifa, along with more footage of the revamped battle system. We got to the game firsthand, as you can see in the video above.

Square Enix also unveiled two new special editions for the game, including a $330 1st Class edition. All of this comes on the heels of Sunday's night announcement of a March 2020 release date for the much-anticipated remake, which releases exclusively on PS4. Kitase said during the presentation that the team "will not disappoint your expectations." You can read more in our Final Fantasy VII Remake pre-order guide.

E3 2019 is steadily drawing to a close, so check the full schedule to see what presentations are left. And check back here for all the latest and hottest announcements and news updates.

We have no idea how many times we will attempt to sell the game to you at full price- I MEAN how many episodes there will be.

Seriously? They don't know?

Seriously?

I have a feeling that what Yoshinori Kitase meant that was Midgar was only going to take one disc of the Remake while the rest of the overworld will take up disc two. I'm okay with that especially since there is not going to be much games releasing in April to occupy my time and Final Fantasy games do take me quite a while to complete.

@luciferweapon1989: No, that's not what he's saying. It's already confirmed that Square is still trying to figure out the scope of part 2. The entirety of the first game takes place in Midgar with an expanded storyline. Midgar itself takes 2 discs.

Honestly, this episodic approach is so shitty... I can't see anything positive about it. Of course the game will sell tons of copies regardless, because of the fanaticism involved with this product, still... It's kinda of a scummy move to sell a remake in multiple parts imo. We already know the story and characters, this "xenoblade combat with sparkles" and the new graphics are the only selling point outside of obvious nostalgia... It justify the game? Multiple chapters, who knows how long they will take developing them, how much they will charge for them, etc.. This whole situation smells fishy to me.

While I'll buy it off course, since I've been wanting this forever. My main concern is how long of a wait between releases? I can't imagine finishing Midgar, going to the gate to get to free roam, then game over at the gate, then waiting and absurd amount of time for the next part.

I can't be alone on this one.

Now if I can dream further and get Kefka in FFVI to get this makeover later down the road.

When Cloud was a bunch of polygons, my imagination carried it from there, and that was good.

Now that Cloud is realistically 3D animated, I can't do it. I couldn't hate the character design more. Tetsuya Nomura's ladybois and cardboard caricatures kill any desire I might have had to play. Maybe I'm too grown up for it now, I don't know, but I cringe when I see FF previews now.

@Abberon: So you agree with AVGN saying that Atari 2600 is the best there is? Even rocks you have to imagine.

Though I agree in different way. On PSX era, a lil bit even on PS2 era all game houses made huge decisions starting right from the way the game looks. There are tons of shitty looking PSX racer games for example, but they all have a lot of personality. Almost no game looks the same.

But now looking at Cloud and the gang it feels like I've seen them a million times before. Not much more than reskins of FFXII or FFXV gang. Even stuff like Ninja Gaiden, Resident Evil etc. have shown almost all the aspects that this remake has shown so far. Standard 3D characters, standard house models...

Yeah I'm sure that for someone it was a fantasy to have FFVII looking prettier when they played it decades ago, but to me this is just a wasted chance. If they did FFXVI then it would at least have new world layout to look forward to. With this remake I literally can't name one reason why I'd like to play it.

@Abberon: I honestly have a similar reaction. The whole androgynous looking, all the leather and zippers, etc.. There's nothing more ridiculous and retrograde than this. Still, Nomura made a name for himself with such horrendous designs. I admit, back when I was younger, the anime frenzy invading the west in the early 00's and etc.. I find it interesting these visuals concepts. Nowadays, I feel ashamed of it. On the other hand, the classic metal gear solid designs of the same time remains excellent.

@gleencross:

The main story was...interesting...although far from coherent.

The parts that made it work were the characters and the mystery behind the chase for Sephiroth. The bulk of the story's good stuff was told on Disc 1 (up to the end of the City of the Ancients). What happened after that was a lot of bizarre, over-the-top nonsense and filler content that probably could have been skipped.

Even so, the bulk of the game's story was Disc 1 and it was a fun, campy mystery chase with one of the most iconic deaths in gaming.

@Abberon: I agree, the mystery of Sephirot was mildly interesting. The death scene is iconic... But that's pretty much it. The talking tiger out of nowhere, the whole plot about the planet special energy... and of course, the japanese cringe, the planet tries to defend himself by releasing giant Mechas around, lol Some can still find their lunacies charming, but I got tired of japanese bullshit. Of the last 10 years or so, I didn't played anything good from them regarding storytelling. Phantom Pain was a mess, Dragon Quest 11 has the most generic fantasy story you can imagine, FFXV was so cringy that I could not even played more than 10 hours, etc.. I don't know if they got worse or if I became too cynical... Maybe a mix of both lol There's a fundamental difference between creativity and lunacy. Back in the day I used to mix up both concepts in my mind, but with time I change my mind significantly. It's not because the japanese tries some crazy, random shit that automatically this can be considered creative. There has to be a balance. Look at Limbo and Inside, games made by europeans dealing with over the top concepts.. Still, they were grounded enough and super creative at the same time.

Come on gamespot! I thought you guys were reporters..

While this game looks epic and I seriously can't wait to relive my childhood, you need to be finding out if this is a delayed exclusive? If it will be coming to PC and/or xbox? Plus will it be chapter based where you select which area you want and keep revisiting there getting a higher score until they bring out the next episode (just like hitman)

They're already taking my money XD

but what am I going to be getting? I think we all want to know next

This game will be a difficult one to pass on for me... But with both Bloodlines 2 and Cyberpunk 2077 coming out in the same release window; I think I'll be able to manage.

I'll say it again: Final Fantasy VII was the best of the series; and that's not just because of nostalgia. I spent so much time with and did so much in that game it's ridiculous. If they confirmed that the game that is being released is the full FF VII experience and not chopped up into episodes; I would pre-order right now. Until then; I'll hold off until a complete edition drops.

@BigFeef: I agree with you. It isn't my favorite, I still really really like it, but it is beloved for a reason. Break it up and change the structure of it, and all you're left with is nostalgia. Plus, like you said, there are some heavy hitters (that are complete games) coming out first quarter so I will be busy until Cyberpunk hits.

@BigFeef: It's kinda ironic because FF7 is a basically a steampunk featuring androgynous protagonist/antagonist + a ridiculous anime plot. Cyberpunk have a slightly similar theme of mixed tech and shit, but you create your character + eastern european plot. Let's see if Cd Projekt will rape japan again, most likely they will.

Almost guaranteed. They're a forward thinking studio, developing games for today.

Square has its head so far up its own nostalgic butt that they haven't delivered anything legitimately creative in 20 years.

When I first played FF7, the Midgar section took no more than 8 hours. If they stretch this into a full standalone game, it will seriously hurt the pacing of the plot. A lot happened in Midgar, but not enough to make a 30-50 hour game out of it. The plot will be doled out at a glacial pace. You won't meet Red XIII until very late, and you'll never even meet the 4 other characters from outside of Midgar. You go through a whole game with mostly 4 characters and 1 who joins you at the end.

What I hope to see is the game release in no more than 2 episodes, with the first episode being the Eastern continent that maybe goes into the western just a little bit.

@lostn: @Thanatos2k:

You forgot about Jessie, Biggs and Wedge. Also Midgar isn't the prologue, the bombing mission is the prologue.

You're thinking in terms of the original game, Midgar has so many different themes going. Personally I would have liked the game to be two massive parts, but it was always unlikely. However I can totally see the potential for a full Midgar game, there's so much they can expand on, especially the vague things like when Cloud starts freaking out with the voice in his head and also show why Aerith is so special as an Ancient (which I think is was they're trying to show in the trailer with the black mist and Sephiroth hallucinations.) Also the whole Jenova and Reunion thing could be told better than it was in the original.

You can go much further with the Turks early on, expand on what Avalanche is about and how the people of the slums see them and what they feel about Shinra who're oppressing them. Then you've got Hojo, Rufus taking over from his dad, and the death of the Avalanche crew. Imagine the emotional impact of them dying after you've spent more time and gotten to know their fleshed out characters.

Midgar is full of room for expansion and I think it'll only help the rest of the game if they get this right. My only big concern is the length of time it takes between games.

@tidus_ff: Midgar does not have enough story content to fill a whole game. You can expand on it but that would only drag it out. There's a reason why scenes get deleted from a film even if they were otherwise good scenes: they hurt the pacing of the film.

And that is what will happen when you expand 6 hours of content into a full RPG. You can't introduce new story events because they weren't in the original. It would mean making massive changes to the rest of the episodes as a result of accommodating the expanded story.

What they will do is expand on the gameplay, adding new fetch quests that everyone loves, but the story will be slower paced like all open world games. It's difficult to tell a story in an open world RPG because the developer has no control over how long a player takes to advance to the next part of the story. So you could literally be told, go and rescue Aeris now before they execute her, but then not end up going there until 30 hours later (after you've done 2 dozen fetch quests) where her captor conveniently waited all this time for you to arrive, despite the false sense of urgency.

FF7's story pace was fast because it didn't have busywork thrown in between story cutscenes. As a result it kept you engrossed in the story. And that will be lost when you expand 6 hours of gameplay into 50. Just imagine if a film did that. You get a story scene, then a few hours of nothing happening before the next scene.

FF7 was a game, but it was well known and loved for its story. And that's going to be compromised when you draw it out like this. It's going to take I would expect at least a decade to tell the whole story, and if you're new to FF7, you're going to think this is taking too long to tell one story. It's not like a book series or movie trilogy where you would get 3 complete stories in this time and not one story broken into 3 parts.

@tidus_ff: Not "unlikely" considering the sheer size of games like witcher 3 and red dead 2. Square simply pushed the FF7 remake button. People will remember this old meme, when Square finally hit the bottom, they will push this button to save their necks. They are wasting money and assets for a long ass time, I honestly think the fans should not give them a pass because of their own stupidity. This game should be complete at release, period. No excuses.

@tidus_ff: The bombing mission is the tutorial. From a story perspective the prologue is Midgar, because the goal of your characters is completely different once you're out of Midgar and the game begins proper with the party assembled. (And not coincidentally there's nothing left for you in Midgar)

@lostn: Yeah Midgar was really the prologue of the game. The game really begins with the Sephiroth flashback and subsequently setting out into the world with a whole new goal completely different than the characters had throughout the whole Midgar sequence.

And now the prologue will be a whole game?

@Evil__Homer:

Well I think it depends on how you see it. I think the word "episodic" makes people think of small chapter segments like what Telltale Games do, whereas this is more like a series of games (think FFXIII trilogy but better.) They're taking the original content and blowing it out, adding to it and adapting it into much bigger and fleshed out standalone games. Each part of the Remake will be an entire game in its own right but will follow the original FF7 story in an overall series - I think of it like the Lord of the Rings trilogy of movies, or the Witcher game series follows Geralts story.

My biggest worry is how long the wait between parts will be because it's SquareEnix, they take forever to do anything.

@tidus_ff: I worry about that to but the last I've heard, they have two teams working, one on the first part and the other working on part 2. With FF15 and KH3 out of the way, it seems they have full steam on FF7 as they should.

They said that the game itself would be the size of two blu-ray discs. Which I interpreted as, once all episodes are released. They already said it would be episodic. I'm guessing something like 4-6 episodes; all of which will add up to the 2 discs they stated. I'm guessing that each disc will be about 12-15hrs worth of game play, with 1-2 episodes released a year after the Midgar episode.

@rawkstar007: Of course they win. More time to develop a tumultuous project without taking any kind of criticism from the majority. "They are taking their time to develop the best product possible" my ass. Square is burning assets since forever and now they are in desperate mode. Not only more time without criticism, but they recover the investment even if they sell the "episodes" at 40 bucks. If they sell at 60, there will be backlash, but the idiots will buy it anyway.
