Now Playing: Banjo Kazooie x Super Smash Bros. Reveal Trailer | Nintendo Direct E3 2019

It's not another 3D platformer, but this announcement might be just as exciting. Confirmed at the E3 2019 Nintendo Direct, Banjo-Kazooie--that is, Banjo the bear and Kazooie the breegull--are coming to the greatest party in video games: Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. The duo will be rubbing shoulders and trading fists and feathers with the likes of Mario, Donkey Kong, and Pikachu, as well as other guest characters like Joker from Persona 5 the Hero from Dragon Quest, who was announced at the same presentation.

In traditional Nintendo fashion, the reveal didn't come without a "gotcha" moment. The announcement trailer began with Donkey Kong and his pal Diddy chilling with their nemesis King K. Rool, when they're startled by something. It's something gold--is that... a puzzle piece? The trio rush to see where it came from and met with a shadowy bird figure, and then a shadowy bear figure... but then it's just the Duck Hunt duo. The dog mocks everyone, and your guard is let down, but just for a second--Kazooie and Banjo arrive on the scene and all is right with the world. You can watch the trailer above.

If you're familiar with Banjo-Kazooie, their fighting style in Smash Bros. Ultimate won't have too many surprises. Banjo will throw punches, Kazooie will both fire eggs and use her wings to help Banjo float, sprint, and charge. Even the series' Jinjos make an appearance in BK's final smash. Banjo-Kazooie will be available in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate in Fall 2019.

The news was particularly notable, given Banjo and Kazooie are characters belonging to Rare, which is owned by Microsoft. Of course, Nintendo was the original publisher of the Banjo series.

Banjo-Kazooie wasn't the only character announced today--Japanese RPG fans can look forward to the Hero from Dragon Quest, who will arrive in Summer 2019. Hero will fight with a sword, shield, an assortment of magical spells. The hero also can take the form of the protagonists from Dragon Quest 3, 4, 8, and 11. You can find more about him in our story.

In our Super Smash Bros. Ultimate review, we said "An inconsistent online mode and situational downers don't stop Super Smash Bros. Ultimate from shining as a flexible multiplayer game that can be as freewheeling or as firm as you want it to be. Its entertaining single-player content helps keep the game rich with interesting things to do, as well as bolstering its spirit of loving homage to the games that have graced Nintendo consoles. Ultimate's diverse content is compelling, its strong mechanics are refined, and the encompassing collection is simply superb."

not into banjo (not hating but never play much of it), but having him in "smash" give me that hope rare and nintendo days might be coming back again (not by much), if only m$ wasn't in the middle of it.

damn, i want to play perfect dark hd (need to lock the aim when ads, still feels like the n64 version), perfect dark zero (wish they fix the game to have better looking/sensitivity like call of duty, borderlands and etc. (not like battlefield and crysis series) and have the couch to be on the right stick button instead of the left stick, also not that pressure sensitive zoom for scope weapons (LT button on the xbox controller) was annoying as hell.) and speed up the auto-sprint while having goldeneye 64 hd in rare replay for the "switch", then it'll feel like rare never left nintendo.

Oh, man! I am so stoked! Dragon Quest heroes coming to Super Smash Bros! This is going to be awesome! (Heroes from DQ 3,4,8 and 11, not 10.)

Oh, and there's a dumpy bear from a bad 3-D platformer coming too, I guess.

@GambreGoemon: Have to be poking the bear on that one (pun mildly intended). "Bad 3-D platformer" while anyone's potential opinion, is critically and commercially false. The first two games are beloved and highly successful among a massive audience.

@GambreGoemon: Oh, man! I am so stoked! Banjo-Kazooie coming to Super Smash Bros! This is going to be awesome! (Representing from Banjo-Kazooie and Banjo Tooie, NOT nuts and bolts.)

Oh, and there's yet another forgettable anime swordfighter from a mediocre rpg series coming too, I guess.

@GambreGoemon: I hope your last comment is sarcasm. because the most requested character for Smash for years comes from a game with great reviews, massive endearing fanbase 20 years strong+ will tell you different.

There is now zero excuse for Rayman not being in Smash. Come the **** on.

@redhedjack: Banjo is just a BIT more hype of a character than Rayman. And by bit, I mean ALOT. But, I would still like Rayman. In fact, if I had to choose just one more 3rd party DLC character, it would be him.
