Now Playing: HALO: Infinite - Announcement Trailer | E3 2018

GameSpot may get a commission from retail offers.

Microsoft started its E3 2018 briefing today with a big Halo reveal: Halo Infinite. We saw a massive, sprawling world with creatures we've never seen before in Halo. The video ended with a tease of Master Chief. But as it turns out, this was only an engine demo, not necessarily indicative of what the game will actually be. The engine is called Slipspace, and what was shown in the trailer is the culmination of "years of work," developer 343 Industries said in a blog post today.

343 created a new engine Halo Infinite because the game was so ambitious that the studio new technology to realise the game's ambition. "The E3 demo showcases some of the exciting potential of this technology--everything you see is running in-engine," 343 said.

The developer stressed that it still has a "long way to go" before Halo Infinite comes out. Not only that, but 343 said the game will undoubtedly change between now and release. That said, the engine demo stands as a "clear indication of the direction we are heading with our next game and a great snapshot of where our tech is right now."

Halo Infinite has a new art style that is inspired by the "most iconic and historic parts of the Halo franchise," as well as fan feedback. You might have noticed that Master Chief's helmet looks a bit different, too, and this is meant to display the game's new art style.

Also in the blog post, 343 said it's aware of the feedback that Halo 5: Guardians did not focus enough on Master Chief. As you may recall, the story was split between Master Chief and Agent Locke. But for Halo Infinite, the game "will focus on the Master Chief and continue his saga after the events of Halo 5." That's good news for fans who want to see Master Chief back at the center of the story.

343 added that waiting for a new Halo game can be difficult--indeed, it has been almost three years since Halo 5 was released in 2015. From the sound of it, Halo Infinite is not coming out anytime soon. And 343 is not going to rush it.

"We are taking the time we need to make the right game and are making changes to how we approach things this time around," 343 said. "The goal of the entire 343 Industries team is to make a great Halo game for our fans that also invites new players into our franchise. We will have some new and unexpected directions to take folks in and I believe the way we achieve that is to build alongside our community, iterating and improving as we go."

343 also teased that it will invite people to play Halo Infinite ahead of launch through testing programs as it has and continues to do with Halo: The Master Chief Collection. "It will take some time for us to be ready to kick those flighting events off, but when we do they will start small and grow along the way," 343 said.

Microsoft's E3 2018 briefing had a lot of news on top of Halo: Infinite, including a new trailer for Cyberpunk 2077 and the announcements of The Division 2, Forza Horizon 4, and Gears of War 5. Check out GameSpot's roundup to see all the big news in one place.

Engine looks a little rough. The animation with the walkie-talkie falling over and the animals running, looked stiff.

What was shown looks more like something you would expect from an open world game, like GTA or the Witcher.

Not sure how I would feel if Halo 6 decided to go that route and be more open world like the division or destiny.

If they could get the atmosphere right it could be great.

This just seems more like something that should have been shown off at GDC, rather than E3.

@mike468: animations can be changed any time. The demo was mainly for how everything renders.

So much for Microsoft's lies where they won't show games "too early" anymore. It was also hilarious when they pretty much announced that they opened a new studio, something everyone knew months ago and not even a single screenshot of what this new studio is working on. Wait til E3 folks is in full swing for Xbox fans starting right now.

@andrewsqual: they kind of had too. With the the uproar on exclusive games, they needed to show that the games are coming.

And still developers show stuff at E3 that has zero chance of looking anything like that when the game is released.

Jeez, I thought we had moved on from that. ?

@paulsgranny: Maybe you're assuming it's an Xbox One game? I'm sure it's next-gen. It might not look exactly like that trailer, but it could get close.

They said it's still a long way away. And I've been saying it: anything releasing 2020 or beyond is a next-gen project. The PS5 will be out in holidays 2019. I thought Microsoft would be a year late because of the recent Xbox One X release, but apparently it won't.

Whenever a company officially declares to be working on the next console, it's not too far away. Because it alienates current-gen users. It seems Microsoft will bite the bullet and make X owners really pissed. But hey, they kinda need to. This battle is lost.

Lol nice one.

I didn't realize E3 was about tech demo's.

Reminds me of a line from a film I saw once, 'somewhere in a galaxy far far away.......'

@paulsgranny: E3 is not about tech demos, but to say E3 tech demos are a thing of the past your just being a negative nancy. Don't know what your so upset about but, this is exactly what E3 is for. Almost nothing seen at E3 is launch ready. Sony teases things like FFVII before the PS4 launches and may not see it until the PS5. I'm very sure when someone sees a tech demo they know it's really just a teaser. I don't think anyone thinks what they see is what they're getting, (there wasn't even any gameplay)... And in some cases it ends up looking better. You think we moved on from what? What basis do you have to say that it won't look anything like the demo? Your first E3?

I wonder if it will be open world? I just hope it isn't some forced-online type of garbage like Destiny or Anthem.

Watching stuff in 60fps looks weird, especially in the halo universe. The animals' running animation wasn't that good & 60fps makes that stand out, to me. I guess I see what they sacrificed in halo 5 to check off the 60fps box, & it was not even close to worth it. If u have everything else in place, then u want to tighten it up to run that smoothly, then by all means. But, to not have anything beyond the engine built, then to give people the impression it will run at 60fps without knowing how much you'll have to sacrifice of the original vision (if there was one) to make that happen, is worrying.

"343 created a new engine Halo Infinite because the game was so ambitious that the studio new technology to realise the game's ambition."

WHAT?? Good grief. I mean I can try to piece that together & throw out words to make sense of that crap, but you get paid to do it. Proofread, just a once over, will benefit you, regardless of what they seem to be teaching the internet journalists these days.

@goodgamesguy: Not sure about the "launch" part, but it's definitely next-gen. I thought Microsoft would be late to the party because of the recent Xbox One X release, but apparently they won't. It seems they'll bite the bullet and launch the next Xbox in tandem with Sony late next year.

They've come out and talked openly about working on next-gen hardware. On f'in E3. This is not to be taken lightly. These companies keep secret about these things because it alienates current-gen users. Now, who's gonna shell out the big bucks on an X when the best next thing seems just around the corner? It sucks for current Xbox owners, but I guess it's a smart move. This battle is lost.

Wouldn't be surprised. This is only a game engine tech demo. They probably haven't even started on the game. So it's probably at least 2-3 years off from release.

We'll get maybe an teaser trailer next year for E3, with a following year, holiday 2020 release.

Maybe, just MAYBE, this game could be part of the crossplay between PC and Xbox, and we can finally get a good new halo on PC.

Probably a 1% chance of happening, but I can dream.
