E3 2018: Shadow Of The Tomb Raider's First Gameplay Trailer Revealed

Tomb Raider is back.

During Square Enix's E3 2018 press conference the company unveiled some brand new Shadow of the Tomb Raider gameplay. The video, which you can watch above, shows off some of the game's new mechanics and the darker tone present in this third and final portion of Lara Croft's origin story.

Shadow of the Tomb Raider contains a more brutal Lara than the 2013 reboot and its sequel, Rise of the Tomb Raider. In fact, we're even left wondering at this early stage whether Lara might actually be the game's villain.

Aside from the darker tone, there's also more of a focus on stealth and more sophisticated traversal, including fully-fledged swimming. More stealth? Terrific. I already saw these games as weekend rentals. This just pushes them farther into that category.

...I really don't like stealth games. They rarely follow their own rules. And before you ask, no, these games weren't always stealth specific games. Straightforward shooting was always a perfectly viable tactic.

Last two games were excellent. Beautiful to play with great controls and interesting stories. I really look forward to this one.

More stealth? Don't make it cheap and don't let combat suffer please. Some games made combat clunky to encourage stealth, and I hated that.

@cboye18: Hey, now! I'm not overly fond of the new games either, but they're still good games. Not the kind of game I'd treasure, but still good.

@Barighm: The re-reboot was good but Rise of The Tomb Raider was just ok IMO. It's not the quality but more the direction of the new games that I rather dislike. Crystal Dynamics focus too much on Lara's emotional state and her morals/values and the gameplay itself is left a lot to be desired.

Tomb Raider was all about (mythological) exploration. There are so many things the devs can now do with gameplay revolving around this. Right now the franchise is just your typical cover shooter with tacked-on stealth mechanics, generic soldier enemies, QTE's for close combat/ exploration mechanics and very simple puzzles. Makes me wish that Lara still had her acrobatic skills and gadgets.

The new games are trending too hard into the Uncharted territory while having untapped potential for being something great yet distinct from Uncharted. So many missed opportunties here IMO.

Square starting off with one of their big name titles. Great way to get the party started. Also it seems like this will take a more in depth look with Trinity and their relationship with Lara.

Loved the jungle setting gameplay. The Mayan backdrop is going to be exciting.

Can’t wait to hear the Uncharted comparisons, lol.

-BUT LARA WAS FIRST NINJA APPROVED-
