E3 2018: Fortnite Switch Doesn't Include Save The World Mode

Switch players won't be able to save the world.

During Nintendo's E3 2018 press conference it was revealed that Fortnite: Battle Royale was heading to the Switch, and has been released today. However, Epic Games confirmed that Fortnite: Save The World will not be coming to Switch alongside the wildly popular Battle Royale mode. An Epic games representative told GameSpot, "We have no plans for Save the World on Switch."

Fortnite: Save the World is a co-op sandbox survival game that is available now in paid early access on console and PC. Battle Royale, meanwhile, is free-to-play.

Now Playing: Fortnite On Nintendo Switch Trailer | E3 2018

Nintendo announced that Fortnite: Battle Royale would be live in the US from 10 AM PT on June 12. Unfortunately, the game is currently having matchmaking issues, likely due to the influx of players. As expected, the game includes co-op and you will be able to group up with friends.

Fortnite's move to Switch will be the game's second jump to a new platform this year. Earlier in the year, a mobile port was released that let players face off against PC opponents.

In other news, Epic has confirmed that Fortnite on Switch supports cross-play with the Xbox One, PC, and mobile editions--but not PlayStation 4. Keep checking back with GameSpot soon for more on Fortnite on Switch.

I mean, I know that Fortnite: Save the World isn't out on Nintendo Switch yet, but there are two things that make me believe that Save the World will come to the Switch. Reason 1: There is a glitch that gets you to the start menu where you can select to go to Save the World or Battle Royale. Of course, the only one that works is the Battle Royale button, and the Save the World just brings you to a page that just says, "No offers available" or something like that. Of course, I don't have Save the World to begin with on my PC, so it might show something else to people who have Save the World. To do this glitch, you just have to ready up in a match (I did it with solos but it probably will work anywhere) and then go into party finder. Hover over one of your friends' names and make sure it would be possible to join their party with the X button. Then, as soon as the loading screen shows up, press X. You have done it correctly if the loading screen has no loading bar under the word LOADING... Reason 2: Today on the in-game news, I saw that Save the World was half off. This was on my Switch, which wouldn't have any relevancy unless Save the World will come to the Switch during the half off event. I know my reason two is kind of weak, but hey, it's a lead.

Why oh why did I purchase Fortnite: Save The World? Since I purchased it, and it is currently in a sorry state, I hope they finish it, but I'm not holding my breath. I believe that wave-based games are fundamentally incompatible with loot games, because there's no way to balance the difficulty of the waves. Gears Horde mode is balanced because it's not a loot game, and a gun is always the same damage. But with Fortnite: Save the world, wave after wave of enemies are too easy.

The mode that no one cared about and almost made the game a total flop? Battle Royale saved their sorry butts. Nobody cares about save the world mode.

I’ve played save the world on PC and it seems like there is a good amount of people that play it. Shame they didn’t bring it to switch. Hopefully once it’s completed, they’ll bring it.

I am playing it on Switch because I can carry it on the go. I enjoyed it last night and didn't run into any issues in matchmaking thus far.

Epic missed their chance to make money on me, Save the World is the only thing I’m interested in, maybe it’ll come to Switch when the mode is complete and battle royale is in decline?

I'd hazard a guess as to say nobody plays it? It's the thing they've spent so many years working on... Battle Royale wouldn't even exist for Fortnite if people were interested in playing the other mode. Battle Royale probably spawned out of an internal discussion that went down like "We spent 7 years working on this thing nobody gives a shit about, stuffing it into a games-as-a-service model, investing all this money and selling a piece of our asses to a Chinese company. What can we do to salvage all this? Jump on the latest trend!" I can't be mad that it worked, but they're pretty fortunate that it did.

@jinzo9988: BR had been in development not long before they actually put the preorders out for StW; it wasn't even done by the main Epic Fortnite team. It really was a cash-in on the PUBG craze. Kind of a shit move, since BR has gotten a lot more content and development than the game people paid for, the game they'd previously claimed "pvp wasn't on the table" for.

@jinzo9988: Or possibly they saw PUBG make a ver popular game with their engine, and thought "Hey, this is a quick cash grab, lets throw in a BR of our own." And the rest is history.

Plenty of people play Save the World, but you are right in that BR took over the game. I wouldn't be surprised if they just abandoned STW, like they did Paragon, in an effort to focus purely on BR. And then when 100 other games have BR in the next 2 years, they will have very few players, and Fortnite will be a passing fad.

The unfortunate effect of having the Battle Royale mode eclipse the rest of the game in popularity. Still, the fact that the Switch even has it should now be a clear signal third parties finally seem to be back and actually trying to support a Nintendo platform. Two years ago if you told me big western publishers like Bethesda, Epic, or Hi-Rez would try to seriously support Nintendo I would've found it crazy, now it seems like a reality once again.

@Exceed20XX: If you've played BR on a low-end PC or mobile, and also played both modes on any of the 3 main platforms, you'll notice the incredible difference in object density -- this is firstly a HW resource requirements issue. The object density in BR is incredibly sparse, while STW is incredibly dense -- particularly city maps. Throw in hundreds of spawning husks on level 46+ maps, each husk with pathfinding and targeting code & data instances to keep up with, and there's a minimum HW spec involved.

I'm sure the balance sheet says they also don't need to spend the money to prove they can do it, so you're right on that level.
