Hideo Kojima's first major project since parting ways with Konami and the Metal Gear series in 2015 after Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain is Death Stranding, a game that's been kept mysterious right up until launch but has left plenty of fans intrigued. Although it's published by Sony on PS4, it's also coming to PC next summer, and you can pre-order it now on Steam and the Epic Games Store.

The PS4 version is out now, and while fans are just now hopping into the United Cities of America, reviews hit a week ago, letting fans know what to expect. Reviews of Death Stranding have been divisive across outlets, but our own Kallie Plagge gave it a 9/10 in our Death Stranding review.

"Death Stranding is a hard game to absorb," she wrote. "There are many intertwining threads to its plot, and silly names, corny moments, and heavy exposition belie an otherwise very simple message. That comes through much more clearly in the game's more mundane moments, when you find a desperately-needed ladder left behind by another player or receive a letter from an NPC thanking you for your efforts. It's positive without ignoring pain; in fact, it argues in both its story and its gameplay that adversity itself is what makes things worth doing and life worth living. It's a game that requires patience, compassion, and love, and it's also one we really need right now."

With the game launching today, the Death Stranding pre-order bonuses are likely gone at this point. You can still get $70 the special editions, however, as well as the $200 Collector's edition, which includes some physical goodies, if you act quickly. The Death Stranding pre-order bonuses for securing a copy ahead of November 8 were mostly gold-tinted versions of items you can get in-game through other means, along with some PSN avatars and a PS4 theme.

Death Stranding pre-order bonuses

If you were able to do so before launch, pre-ordering Death Stranding on PS4 got you a Chibi Ludens PSN avatar and a Death Stranding dynamic theme for your PS4 as system-level pre-order bonuses. A pre-order also got you special gold versions of various in-game items, though you have to unlock them through gameplay. Those include:

  • Gold "Sam" sunglasses
  • Gold hat
  • Gold Speed Skeleton (boosts Sam's movement speed when equipped)
  • Gold armor plate (boosts Sam's protection against any damage)
