E3 2018: BioWare's Anthem Requires Online Connection, EA Confirms

BioWare says you'll need a persistent internet connection to play its new game.

BioWare's Anthem is always online. Developer Mark Darrah confirmed to GameSpot that you'll need a persistent internet connection to play its upcoming cooperative shooter, whether you're adventuring solo or with other players.

This is similar to the approach taken by Destiny, to which Anthem has drawn many comparisons since it was first unveiled at last year's E3. Activision's online shooter likewise places a heavy emphasis on cooperative play and requires a persistent internet connection, regardless of whether or not you're teaming with other players.

On top of confirming that Anthem will always be online, Darrah revealed that the game will not feature PvP at launch. However, he did suggest that such a mode would be added to the game after it releases.

BioWare shared a lot more details about the game during EA's E3 2018 press conference. Among other things, we learned more about the game's customizable Javelin exosuits, which function similar to traditional RPG classes. BioWare also revealed Anthem is set in a dynamic, shared world that was "abandoned by the gods," and it's up to players to explore uncharted worlds and protect humanity from monstrous threats.

Anthem launches for PS4, Xbox One, and PC on February 22, 2019. The game will release in a standard and special Legion of Dawn edition; the latter comes with Legendary Armor Packs for all four of the game's Javelin types, as well as VIP access to all of Anthem's pre-launch demos. Those who subscribe to EA's premium Origin Access Premiere service, meanwhile, will get full access to the game on PC several days early, on February 15.
