E3 has officially kicked off, with EA Play debuting the first major details about Anthem. That includes a release date--February 22, 2019--and a look at gameplay from the shared-world shooter.

Anthem is BioWare's new IP, and it's a game in the mold of Destiny. The video EA showcased offered a brief look at the demo that will be available to play for those attending EA Play. Four players explore an area that shows signs of something large that's left behind eggs. They explore further and happen upon a giant, hideous monster they'll apparently have to square off with, although that encounter isn't shown.

Now Playing: Anthem Gameplay Demo | E3 2018

Exploring the world seems to center around being able to fly around with your power armor, which is called a Javelin. BioWare detailed that there are four different versions of this that you can equip between missions: Ranger, Colossus, Interceptor, Storm. Each has its own strengths and weaknesses, and they can all be customized in various ways.

BioWare also confirmed you will be able to purchase cosmetic and vanity items, but that you'll buy these directly. There won't be loot boxes in the game, meaning you'll know exactly what you're getting when you decide to plunk down some money.

We'll have more about Anthem as E3 rolls on.
