E3 2017: Xbox Exec On Xbox One X Being More Expensive Than PS4 Pro

The console is $100 more expensive than the PS4 Pro.

The Xbox One X is priced at $500 in the US, which is a full $100 more than the console it will likely get most frequently compared to, PlayStation 4 Pro. The Xbox One was $100 more expensive than the PS4 when those systems launched in 2013, and that did not end up turning out very well for Microsoft. Is history going to repeat itself? Microsoft is confident in the appeal and the uniqueness of Xbox One X, but only time will tell.

Speaking to GameSpot today at E3, Microsoft's Dave McCarthy told us that Xbox One X stands alone when it comes to power and value. He added that PC, not PS4 Pro, is a better comparison to Xbox One X, and Microsoft's console represents a strong value when looking at it this way, he said.

No Caption Provided

"As far as I'm aware, there is nothing that offers the combination of power and performance at the price that we're doing right now [with Xbox One X]," he said. "If I were to make a comparison on the capabilities with the 6 teraflops and the extra RAM we have in the machine, the true 4K gaming, which is more than just the 8 million pixels; you've got HDR, spacial audio support with Dolby Atmos. I would make more of a comparison to the PC space in terms of capabilities. And at that price point, I think it's a wonderful premium device in terms of operating those capabilities. Xbox One is still a great device for us; supporting HDR gaming and the 4K video and the 4K Blu-ray stuff.

"But comparison wise, I don't think that combination of price, performance, and form factor is rivalled in the market at all." The Xbox One X launches on November 3. Internationally, it will go for £449, €499, CA$599, and AU$649.

Our conversation with McCarthy covered a number of other Xbox topics. Keep checking back with GameSpot soon for more.

Why are you guys arguing about which system is better? The consoles being built now are being built with traditional PC hardware. Well Microsoft has been doing this the longest but Sony is now locked into using PC parts if they want to start their trend of true backwards compatibility. I don't think Sony will win hardware wars anymore if they're gonna play this game of who has the most powerful hardware with Microsoft using PC parts.

Microsoft was either smart or lazy and decided to use what was already out there and can now play most titles leading back to the OG Xbox. Microsoft IS the PC world and for people who don't have the hardware to game on PC or don't want to deal with hackers, their is the Xbox brand. Microsoft has already built it's ecosystem and Sony is truly the real one that is playing catch up here and always will.

I personally like the Xbox brand. I'm from the US so a bunch of people around me have it and LIVE is tons better to ME due to the simplicity of purchasing games digitally either through the console or on the computer, the Dashboard, and party chat setup is more streamlined than Sony's. Why does Sony's take up the whole screen when going through the chat menus????

The market rejected a $500 xbox.

Their answer? Another $500 xbox.

Good price for USA, but bad price for the rest of the world because of tax. but it's an awesome console. Day 1 buy.

If you think about it that thing can only flop. Unless they sell very low goals for it anyway, positioning it as the high end premium model for the select few that care.

The PS4 was released for 400 bucks, the Xbox One at 500, which they quickly reduced to 400 cause they couldn't compete. Now we're probably not that far away from the next console gen and people are supposed to pay 500 bucks for an upgraded version, which might be more than the next gen will cost at release? And all it does is let you play games in 4K, otherwise everything else stays the same unlike when a true next gen console gets released. Yeah, doesn't sound worth it.

@xpertmom: Only if you assume that this gen will last as long as the last one, which was very unusual. The PS4 has been out for more than 3.5 years by now, in 2 or 3 years at most we should be expecting the next gen.

The problem is, will consumers compare it to PC or PS4Pro? Because whatever MS thinks, if consumers compare it to the PS4Pro, they're shooting themselves in the foot.

Brothers I am telling you, I have a 4h her gaming TV, the most vfm there is , the Samsung KS8000. This TV automatically interpolates the HD signal you get into 4k, I be tried on it the 360, the PS4 and PS4 pro and I am telling you, once you go beyond 950p, you won't tell the difference. Her and 60fps are far more important. I was there was someone to advice me of this before hand, like I do for you. Imo, the most vfm and wisest option is a PS4 slim. For the Sony exclusives and a GTX 1070 for the MS exclusives and have best of both worlds. The productivity of a PC is unparallel and if you play strategy games is a must have. Also the shooters do play best with a mouse. I sold my 360 and got my PS4, then sold it to get my PS4 pro and it really is not worth it and judging from what happened the xbone, the Xbox x will also suffer a 25% loss of power because of its media focused os\ui. Even a GTX 1060 can allow you to play the best MS exclusives, like the Forza games and gears of war. Save the extra cash to buy a better TV, or a mobile like S8+ instead.

I hope many people prefer their PS4 or PC, so I can pick one up without the supply problems the Switch has had.

it´s powerfull enough fot native 4k/60fps, better cooling solution, better looking than ps4 pro, much smaller, 4k bluray, downsampling for all games, backwards compatibility...the xbox one x is worth the $100 over the ps4 pro.

@Razor10000: You left out one important factor and it's that PS4 has the better variety/exclusive games by a mile. In the end it always comes down to games and what kind of game library you can build. With that said... I'll be getting the X for my 65 inch 4K/HDR tv.

@ohjtbehaaave: i don´t agree ps4 have better exclusives, they have more amazing exclusives. the same way xbox doesn´t have exclusives like horizon, the last of us, bloodborne...playstation doesn´t have halo, gears, forza horizon...

every console offers gamers different experiences. with ps4 and xbox one s keep dropping price, gamers can experience both console exclusives, which is awesome.

@Razor10000: You mean either 4K or 60fps. No way in hell could it ever run a triple A game in 4K at that framerate.

@Atzenkiller: just watch digital foundry xbox one x future videos, but every game that is 60fps on xbox one s will probably be native 4k/60fps on xbox one x.

forza 7 runs at native 4k/60fps and looks amazing - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=87z5J3YtlWw&t=1s

@xpertmom: Well, we'll see. So far it seemed like most games wouldn't even run in native 4K, with mainly MS ensuring that their first party titles will.

@Atzenkiller: I guess MS didn't ensure that with Crackdown 3 which looks like a 360 game.

@Atzenkiller: Many 3rd party games will run in native 4k, but not 60fps for all. But I hope most devs will aim for 60fps rather than 4k, at least make an option with 60fps with lower resolution.

I'm torn on this. I have a PS4 Pro which gets me the 4K games I need and the Xbox One S for the 4K Blu-Ray. I wanna buy this for release but my concern is exclusives. Are there gonna be that many games that take full advantage of the higher specs? Most multi-plat games are gonna be developed for PS4 then ported to XONE X. At least I assume it would take less time to upscale then downscale. So, they are going to have to make it worth it for me.

Not to compare Nintendo and Microsoft, but what games took advantage of the power with the New 3DS besides Xenoblade? I don't think anything else (at least state-side.) So I'm a little skeptical at the moment. But time will tell, I guess.

@sjawz3288: I doubt most things will be developed for PS4 Pro and then ported to the One X. Generally things are developed on PC and then ported down, but even if they're just doing it on consoles I'd imagine more will start using the One X as the baseline since, like you said, it's much easier to downscale than it is to upscale.

I think it's obvious why it's more expensive. I also don't think it's too expensive for what it is - it could have been more powerful still, of course, but I think there's easily $500 of technological "value" in that package.

Whether it's worth it for YOU (or me) personally to spend $500?... of course that's going to depend on your personal situation. I don't see a personal need to drop 500 clams on this. I don't see it adding $500 worth of new experiences or improvements to my gaming life. But... I have a Win10 gaming PC and a I DON'T have a 4K TV. So... clearly people with different situations might really want this!

Build the product you want to build, then charge the price that you have to charge. Don't create an inferior product just to reduce the price. If it's worth it, people will buy it.

@NeverMore0: If people want it they'll buy it, if they don't you've just wasted a lot of money and resources creating a product for the 1%. Which might be enough for some but I get the feeling MS was hoping for more, otherwise they would have set the price much higher.

Anyone else think Xbox One X is a bit overindulgent on the number of X's? It reminds me of those guys in mmos that have names like XStarWarriorX... Just saying.

So what? People pay more for phones just to have a slightly better one every year OR storage space.

@Barighm: Maybe with cheap phones. I've had my last phone for 4 years and the only thing dying after about 2 years is the battery, which is down to maybe half capacity at that point. But of course that's actually a problem now that most phones don't seem to let you replace the battery.
