Now Playing: Why Xbox Boss Wants To Co-Exist With Sony - E3 2017

If you watched the Microsoft E3 2017 press conference, you probably noticed that Microsoft was using a new term to describe certain games: "console launch exclusive." Today on GameSpot's stage show, Head of Xbox Phil Spencer clarified what that designation means.

For the past few years, game companies have often had timed exclusives for certain games, meaning that they are available only on a certain console for a limited time after release. Spencer explained to us that "console launch exclusive" is essentially synonymous with "timed exclusive," except with a bit more specificity.

"Console launch exclusive means the first console the game will launch on will be Xbox One," he said. "I don't know, honestly, anything about when those games are going to launch on another platform. It's really up to the developer to do the work to make that happen."

But why the change in terminology from "timed exclusive"? According to Spencer, it's to convey the fact that some of them have already been released on PC. He stated, "These are games that will launch first on Xbox... some of these are already out on PC, so that's why we chose the term that we did."

In addition, he clarified that an "Xbox One and Windows 10 Exclusive" will only ever be on those platforms. A "world premiere," on the other hand, is the first time that certain gameplay has been shown, but--depending on the game--it might come to more platforms.

Spencer also talked about the possibility of the PS4 Pro holding the Xbox One X back, and he discussed his belief that console wars are unhealthy. You can also see all of the news from Microsoft's E3 2017 press conference here, and be sure to keep an eye on our E3 hub here.

and 2 consoles later there's still no custom music import to the hard drive. no way to have custom music in wrestling games

etc etc etc. even though both microsoft and sony said that reason was because they didn't think it was that important. yet now they know it's important and still haven't added it.

Console LAUNCH exclusive. LAUNCHING on this console first. Those games are already available on the PC. Man some people lack critical thinking skills. I picked that up right away.

@chris91090: Every Xbox game is available on PC too since like 2015. "Console launch exclusive" means that it's exclusive on consoles at launch, aka PlayStation will get it too, but at a later date.

When it comes to Xbox everything needs to be clarified for some reason.

@j15reed: Only for the biased fanboy trolls who want to make a big deal out of everything Microsoft does or says.

@j15reed: not really I knew it was time exclusive, cause most those games were third parties and you know it will be on another platforms. Third parties aint no longer want keep one game on one system when they can sell more than one platform.

When Phil isn't talking he seems really pro consumer, Backwards compatibility, Game pass and timed refunds, but as soon as he opens his mouth shit comes out, never give sales figures its always shipped, change the wording on timed exclusive so they can fool a few extra people.

And as for the console wars are unhealthy, thats just stupid, I doubt the xbox would have BC and the game pass if they weren't so far behind Sony, so its forced them to do pro consumer stuff rather than sit back and do nothing, which is obvious they intended to do, so its only unhealthy for Phil as its likely putting his job in jeopardy.

@Runeweaver: Your living in cuckoo land with some of those comments lol

Avatar image for aj87

@Runeweaver: There is a difference between "console competition" and "console wars". What you described is a console competition, what people make out of this is a console war, which is when no life losers fanboys from both companies try to bash each other in the most cringe ways just because they play THE SAME SHIT on different machines (which are practically the same shit also), except for a exclusive here and there, that are not even.. what? 2%, maybe 3% of all the games? This is a console war, and this is what he meant.

Avatar image for dieofnv2

@Runeweaver: I get the same vibe from you, I see your picture and I think Yoda smart and wise then I read your comment and I think dumb ass and phony.

In my opinion as a consumer dont need to know about console sales unless you own stocks with MS and if Phill fooled you by saying "Console Launch Exclusive" then you are a lot easier to fool than you think.

Avatar image for Runeweaver
Runeweaver

@dieofnv2: Then why do they give shipped figures at all?, its because they are trying to trick people, hiding the fact they are losing the console war at the moment, unlike Sony and Nintendo who give sales figures, even when they failed like the Wii U.

And people do need to know which system is selling better, as it effects how many games are being released on the system, at the moment the PS4 has around 20-25% more games on it that the Xbox one, and that number is increasing.

Avatar image for xzerocarnagex
XzerocarnageX

@Runeweaver: Your early off your head. Microsoft do give figures, they specifically say they put subscription to Xbox live gold figures before sales figures. It's more of an actual accurate figure Microsoft say because of how many people are subscribed to Xbox live and the fact it guarantees they are active still, rather than sales figures which doesn't guarantee that people still own Xbox consoles any more than Sony's sales figures and people still owning a PlayStation console.

Avatar image for dieofnv2
Dieofnv2

@Runeweaver: beacuse it is clear by now that xbox is not going to catch on to sony, so it is point less to report a number that should only interest share holders, do you really think the average consumer says before they buy a console " I'm going to research witch console has the most units SOLD not shipped BUT SOLD, I refused to be tricked by units shipped" do you really think that MS trick under their sleeve?

Avatar image for MetaMods

@Runeweaver: I believe nintendo did stop WiiU reporting and they admit wasn't as success as they want it to

It's all a pile of rubbish. Phil's the guy that declared "timed exclusives" were bad for the industry when PC and PS were getting Xbox titles too. Now that ALL of the Xbox lineup is coming to PC, they don't have a leg to stand on. All their stuff is non-exclusive.

Xbox can't claim "exclusive" titles anymore. Where's your Persona 5, Xbox? Nier? Nioh? Horizon? lololololol

I'm not a fanboy, but Phil literally rubs me the wrong way. Everything he says is backwards double-speak. I can't see purchasing another Microsoft console with absolutely zero exclusives. I'd rather put that money into a good PC rig. Sony and Nintendo have the right idea here. Have true exclusives and people will want what you are selling.

Avatar image for j15reed
j15reed

@CyberEarth: I guess its ok for Sony to have every marketing deal and 3rd party exclusive timed or other wise.

Avatar image for readysalted
ReadySalted

@CyberEarth: You can't talk about what 'true exclusives' are and speak of NieR, which is also on PC. You've also mentioned 3 games that have sold in low numbers; less than million for Persona 5, 1.5million for NieR and 1million for Nioh. Obviously PS4 owners don't care about these exclusives, as they certainly aren't buying them! Even Horizon represents 5% of the user base owning it. So where's Xbox's version of those games? Who cares, no one will buy them anyway.

Avatar image for xlegend

@readysalted: you dont understand exclusives priority is not to be the best selling game on the platform it is to get you invested in the ecosystem. Its just a bonus. We all know the best selling games are multiplatform mostly except nintendo of course but nintendo systems dont get as much third party support as the others.

Avatar image for CyberEarth
CyberEarth

@readysalted: Umm... Persona 5 was the best selling game in April. Across all systems. That's not a "low" number. 1.5 million in the first week is phenomenal. Also, that 1.5 million doesn't include the 500,000 sold in Japan (which is also large for Japan). Your perspective on what is a "good" number of game sales is certainly skewed.

Comparatively, Diablo 3 RoS console sold 2 million copies across all console platforms, and that's being claimed as a roaring success.

As for Horizon, it's surpassed 3.5 million as well. Maybe you should learn some perspective if you want to bring in numbers, because those are pretty large ones for console.

Avatar image for readysalted
ReadySalted

@CyberEarth: That's the issue though, isn't it. We now think a game selling a million is a roaring success but there's so few hitting that number. There's so little games this gen selling over a million compared to last gen. There's 60 million PS4s out there yet 10 first party have sold 1 million or more, which is far too low. Only 7 for Xbox One. The vast majority of PS4 and Xbox players are forgoing exclusives, clearly, so you can't say these numbers are seen as important system sellers. Looks like multi-plats are bringing in the games this gen. FIFA 17 was packed in for the Xbox One S launch at it finally outsold PS4 for a few months. Obviously a third party game was a better choice than first party to help sell the console.

Avatar image for CyberEarth
CyberEarth

@readysalted: I would counter with Horizon, which will be bundled with PS4 console. Bet it sells 5+ million before the year is out.

PS4 will easily top PS3 by the time the generation is done. Some games like Witcher don't separate out their individual console numbers, either. But yes, this generation has tons of cross-platform and 3rd party titles. For the most part, that's a good thing, but Sony realizes that 1st party games and exclusives are what people want as well. Microsoft is blind to it, and I think it will hurt them in the long run.

Avatar image for dieofnv2
Dieofnv2

@readysalted: how dare you to bring sales numbers and math to this forum, we are talking about the BEST exclusives, get out with your logic and numbers !!!!!

Avatar image for readysalted
ReadySalted

@dieofnv2: I hold my head in shame! It's crazy how little exclusives are selling on Xbox and PS4, with Uncharted 4 being the exception. You can understand why there's not many exclusive games any more with such low returns (and why a lot rely on micro transactions and DLC).

Avatar image for j15reed
j15reed

@readysalted: I think its just the fact of the cost to make these games, these days you have to have micro-transactions and other ways to monetize because its like making a big budget movie now.

Avatar image for readysalted
ReadySalted

@j15reed: Oh definitely. It's crazy that costs are going up, but sales are going down, so getting players to pay more for games via extra payments is the only way to make money. It'd be interesting to see how much, for instance, Halo 3 made on 15 million sales, versus Halo 5 on 5 million sales + micro-transactions (and the budget differences).

Didn't this guy say time exclusives were bad for the industry? Lol.

Looks like Microsoft can't have anything made by their first party studios, relying on timed exclusivity is the only way to get some exclusive content on their console.

Avatar image for chris91090
chris91090

@crusadernights: You might want to double check your facts buddy. Nioh, developed by Team Ninja and published by Koei Tecmo, 3rd parties. Nier Automata, developed by Platinum Games and published by Square Enix, both also 3rd party. Persona 5, developed by Atlus and co-published by Deep Silver along with Atlus USA. Both also technically 3rd party since Shin Megami Tensei games are available on Nintendo platforms.

The only one actually developed by a Sony 1st party studio is Horizon by Guerrilla Games, at least in recent memory.

Avatar image for crusadernights
Crusadernights

@chris91090: You didn't take into consideration the fact that many times its upto the developer/publisher to make the game for a particular system. Most of the times third party developers would want to develop for the PlayStation first coz of the huge userbase.

Not all developers have huge amounts of cash and capital to develop for both systems.

Avatar image for chris91090
chris91090

@crusadernights: I know. But Sony 1st party studios are not responsible for Playstation's recent exclusive titles, except one. Those were likely bought, as stated during Sony's press conference "through strategic partnerships with 3rd party partners".

Avatar image for fitzy_2812
Fitzy_2812

@crusadernights: There is a differences between a timed exclusive and a paid time exclusive like games such as Tomb Raider were. Some smaller developers simply don't have the manpower to make 2 different console versions at the same time, so they make the Xbox version first, and then make the PS4 version after its finished, or vice versa, thereby making a timed exclusive.

Its not surprising that most of the timed exclusive titles are titles that have already been released on PC, they just translate easier to Xbox making it a more viable first option for developers to choose if they need to. There is nothing wrong with timed exclusives if it is beyond the capabilities of the developers at the time to release on multiple consoles, the issue comes from when someone purchases that exclusivity simply to prevent another group from playing them and that is what Phil's comment was in reply to.

Avatar image for MetaMods
MetaMods

@fitzy_2812: um you are wrong, first both consoles using almost excatly same CPU and GPU. So there was not much difference other than just port it over. And no there is no timed exclusive and paid, they are same logical

Avatar image for fitzy_2812
Fitzy_2812

@MetaMods: There is much more besides just hardware to consider (even if they are similar they are still distinct custom hardware btw), for starters there is the fact that Xbox uses Direct X instead of OpenGL like PS, there are also very different online networks to code for, its not as simple as you make it sound, some developers simply don't have the resources or money to make multiple versions at the same time.

Fundamentally, its still a timed exclusive but there is a huge difference between a developer not having the resources to make both versions at the same time and someone simply saying **** everyone else and paying for the exclusivity. Your view would be like saying there is no difference between cold murder and murder in self defence, they are both murder but very drastically different from each other.

Avatar image for joshrmeyer

Remember when Phil said timed exclusives are bad for the industry and gamers? Out of the 22 "exclusives" he announced, I wonder how many were timed exclusives.

Avatar image for greggyeggy
GreggyEggy

@joshrmeyer: He didn't pay for these timed exclusives. The developers are choosing to bring these games to Xbox first therefore making it a timed exclusive. Did you listen to the video in its entirety? I'm guessing no!

Avatar image for joshrmeyer
JoshRMeyer

@greggyeggy: Why would developers, who want to make money, bring their game to the system with the lower install base and a system that isn't even released yet without any financial incentive? In theory, they'd make twice as much money selling their game on the PS4 vs the Xbox... And even more by selling on all 3 or 4 platforms available. It does them no good to release the game on Xbox as a timed exclusive... Unless someone is giving them money to do so.

BS it is upto the devs when they release the games on other consoles. If MS are paying extra money to have the game released strictly on Xbox I am sure they stipulate to the devs hey guise dont let Nint or Sony get this game for X amount of months. Otherwise if it really was upto the devs they would maximize the profits and just say sure day2 we will release it to every other platform, it makes no sense for a dev to hold out on a game for a year like Tomb Raider when they can get profits asap and sooner
