E3 2017: PS4 Sales Reach New Heights

Sony announces a new PS4 sales figure and more.

Sony announced a new PlayStation 4 sales figure today. The popular console has now sold more than 60.4 million units worldwide as of June 11. This is up from the 60 million figure that Sony announced at the end of April, covering units shipped to retailers but not necessarily sold.

PS4 game sales, meanwhile, stand at 487.8 million units worldwide as of June 11, covering retail and digital sales combined. The other figures that Sony included in its announcement today were already confirmed, including 70 million monthly active users on PlayStation consoles and 26.4 million PS Plus paid subscribers globally, both figures good through the end of March. Sony also confirmed that active PS4 users worldwide hit 600 million hours per week.

"We are very grateful for our fans and partners around the globe who have continued to support PS4," PlayStation president Andrew House said in a statement. "The PS4 platform is in its prime, with the industry's best lineup of exclusive and partner titles slated to release this year, taking full advantage of the power of the PS4 system.

"We are committed to further expanding our overall PS4 ecosystem, by broadening the PlayStation VR content portfolio, as well as enriching our network services along with our ground-breaking software lineup. We remain steadfast in bringing the best entertainment experience to users worldwide and making PS4 the best place to play."

Sony's E3 2017 briefing took place this evening. During the show, Sony announced the first expansion for Horizon: Zero Dawn, a new game involving selfies, and more details on the new Spider-Man game. Check out GameSpot's news roundup to see all the news in one place.

If you play ARK you should watch this.

If you think all multiplat games will look the same or run the same you need to watch this.

If you think the xb1x is useless and does the same thing as the ps4 pro and runs the same games at almost the same quality you need to watch this if you haven't already.

Sony met my expectation but not my hopes. Things balanced out I suppose. I fully expected them to show, yet again, all the same games they've been showing. They did that but without release dates and that sucks so they failed there. While Microsoft nearly cleaned their slate with known games with launch dates and even technical specs on how those games will look. Sony, flashy game trailers, no details on Pro enhanced titles, no dates, no new hardware, no surprises. Very safe. They even went as far as to talk about the Pro as the best console, which technically it is and has been since it release and remain so till the XoX, and VR.

I certainly look forward to the Sony exclusives as they will shine on the Pro. I'll also enjoy some nice online gaming with the XoX since I'm a gamepad guy. The rest, all the exciting single player campaigns, will remain PC exclusive for me. All of the above will be in 4K (or close enough) so I believe now, with XoX, all bases are truly covered.

@khanwashere: X-Box One X.

Xbox itself is not a word. iKnow they are together in the name but that doesn't mean it's abbreviated with the same letter. If that was true the Playstation 4 would just be called the P4.

Nice job typing all that crap, though. Really.

Sony is killing it while microsoft still has not learn their lesson, entering the race with a $500 console, if they were smart they would have sold the new xbox for $400 with the claim that its more powerful for the same price, the multipat games will look the same on both consoles so microsoft price themselves out of the market again and will flop hard this holiday season.

@yukushi: here is the first real proof that multiplat games can and may be superior to the ps4 pro versions. The Xbox 1x can run that game at the pcs highest setting possible at 60fps 4k. Something that is simply "not possible on the ps4 pro."

Ps4 pro is running this game at 1080p 45fps with the same medium settings as the ps4.

This developer straight up said that the Xbox 1x is 50 percent more powerful.

The Xbox 1x may flop but it won't stop me from enjoying the very best experience available to consoles.

@yukushi: They aren't entering the race, MS still has Xbox One S which will be the main selling console. If you think that they would sell a more powerful console at the same price as the PS4 Pro, which has lower specs and no 4k blu ray, you're an idiot.

@yukushi: There are other trains of thought on that topic. For the asking price I expected the XoX to have a 1TB SSD and an Elite controller to be considered the premium product they are claiming it to be. Or to include a free game at least. There are so many things to make a simple console only launch more enticing to people that are always harping on cost.

@skot_free: last years Sony conference had real surprises. Hell Nintendo just announced Metroid Prime 4 and nobody leaked that one. I disagree about them all being lame. Ubisoft had a solid show. Nintendo just killed it. Microsoft at least had new hardware to show. They all had something to offer. But Sony really phoned it in.

65 mil by end of December. The drop in price of the Pro(which is almost a certainty) should propel sales even faster next year... Until ps5 is announced.

@joshrmeyer: 65 mill by the 4th year mark is crazy scary and your right a lower price point, the below $249 and $199 is when, (traditionally) consoles sales make half of their total sales during their lifetimes.

Still though I am a huge xbox fan, and nintendo fan. The price point of the Scorpio at $500 just does not make sense. If the system upgrade from the xbox one comes out for that much then their needs to be several games that take advantage of that price point and not just playing current games at a prettier frame rate.

@jenovaschilld: What's kind of funny(well not really) is the Xbox one S has the 4k Blu-ray player and HDR just like the X does. If they went from the old Xbox one(no HDR, or 4k drive), the X would be more compelling. $199 for a Xbox One S is a steal if you care about HDR and 4K. 2 1/2 "S's" for the price of 1 "X" is rediculous... Also all the same games.

@joshrmeyer: I think the 1x has a fair price. I also think MS have priced it higher because there will always be hard core fans who want the latest and greatest whatever the price. Like the pro, it will sell well initially and then when sales drop off, we'll start to see cuts which will bring the more casual gamers in.

Sony's sales are amazing. Launching a more powerful console at the same price as the pro won't swing things back in MS's favour because - like the pro - the 1x is aimed at that minority of gamers who want the best hardware out there.

Personally, I think Sony's E3 was underwhelming, and at times downright amateurish.... Sound problems throughout were annoying, and I saw fewer games that tickle my fancy than at MS's event....but Sony are so far ahead at this point, they can afford to take a little break - but they can't afford to rest on their laurals because MS are pushing hard....which is when we gamers benefit.

@sealionact: Yeah, I think the price is fine and fair. One thing I can't understand is why so much $$$ went into development of a console that only a few will get(a million or 2)... And I'm also referring to the Pro, except that seemed like it was a lot less work to design. About E3, I basically forgot everything I've watched the last 2 days lol. Kinda shows it was a bad E3 overall in my opinion.

@joshrmeyer: having the best performing console leading into a new gen will trick the mass market casuals that one brand is better than the other. Casuals don't know how many ps4 consoles have been sold and no one knows how many xb has sold.

All they'll know for the rest of the gen is that games run best on Xbox 1x.

That'll go a long way at the beginning of next gen. You can get a ps5 in 2019 or you can get an xb 2020 with double the power of the ps5. I am buying a ps5 day one but some might want to wait for the better experience since.

Here is the first proof that Xbox 1x can and may run games vastly superior compared to the ps4 pro.

Last time I checked the ps4 pro is running the game at 1080p 45fps average. It's not bad at all and way better than the base ps4 and xb1, but you can't compare it to the x1x version.

Check it out. I believe the x1x is running this game at the highest pc setting at 4k 60fps. Something that is impossible on the ps4 pro even if it's the same game and devs.

@neoistheone: What game? I didn't see a link. So let's assume the ps5 will have 10 teraflops when released in 2019, you think the Xbox that is released in 2020 will have 20 teraflops? And this mystery game you talk about is running at 1080p 45fps on Pro, and 2160p 60fps with ultra settings on the X? That 1.8 extra teraflops is not going to deliver that much of a difference. Even the CPU which is clocked at .2ghz faster will not add 15fps in 1080p, much less in 2160p. It's a fast machine, but this isn't some super computer. What we're gonna see when it releases are basically what we saw with the PS4 and Xbox One, except now PS4 has checkerboarding to help with the resolution. The Witcher 3 is getting patched Pro and X... What do you think the difference will be? I'm gonna say very little... Both 30fps, with X at native 4k and the Pro at native 1440p upscaled to 2160p. Even side by side, there will be little noticable difference, but yes, X will look better. Sucks we have to wait til Nov to see what this thing can actually do in the living room. For now, it's a big guessing game.

@joshrmeyer: I don't think a price drop for the Pro will do much overall. Pro, like the X, is still for the hardcore gamers like us who care about having the best product available. Dropping the base/slim to $199 though, system will sell like hotcakes and probably hit 85-95 million or more by end of holiday 2018.

@suicidesn0wman: That is true also. But as dudebro said, I can see a lot of people retiring their og PS4 for the Pro once a price drop happens and people start to buy 4k TVs.(I still don't know anyone that has one, and they're dirt cheap at Walmart). And then factor in when ps5 is announced or rumored. If it's not til 2020, then I'm definitely getting a Pro. If it's 2019, I may wait for it instead of a Pro.

@suicidesn0wman: I'm in love with the oled displays. My phone uses one now, which doesn't compare to a tv, but still super cool that the actual pixel turns completely off(total black). This might be old tech, but I just recently saw a 4k display at Bestbuy... It made the other 4k displays look old. Walmarts 4ks are a joke but all people see is the 4k part so that'll be what sells the most. I made the mistake of buying a Vizio 1080p TV from them. I later bought a LG bezelless tv(3 times as much) and it's like night and day difference. I'll wait for a good 4k to drop in price.

@suicidesn0wman: I'm waiting for that sweet spot when you can get a good tv for a decent price but it won't be the best... Maybe I'll be waiting until the 8ks come out lol. I noticed once 4k came out, even the really nice 1080p TVs dropped price almost in half. If I upgrade I also want to go bigger than what I have(a 55"). I wish the 75-80" 1080p TVs were cheaper as I might just get one of those instead. I sit far enough away that 4k isn't going to make a huge difference. Unfortunately those 1080p TVs don't have HDR, which I definitely want. I think you said you were eyeballing a qled last time we had this conversation. Those looked good too... Or maybe that's the tv you're talking about... I'll check those 2 out that you mentioned. I prefer Samsung over Sony, but both are still top notch brands... Just seems like Sony has slipped a bit as far as bang for buck goes.(my observation from 5+ years ago. They may be back at it again)

Edit: Looks nice and half the price of a OLED. I may have to consider one of those also.

@joshrmeyer: Yeah, I was looking at a KS-9500 from Samsung, but when i saw the two side by side the Sony just looked better. I am interested in the Q-led, but I think i'm going to get the models that released just prior to those. I think I just want a TV that's good enough that these Pro/X devices can blow me away, but not so weak that I feel like I wasted money on the TV a year or two after buying it.

@suicidesn0wman: Geez that cars going on 20 years old. At that point I'd go real old school and get a testarossa. A kid in high school had one and I hated him for it lol (All I had was a bicycle).

FYI, I don't know diddly about Ferraris. But I'm seriously considering getting a new Alfa Romeo Guilia... Pretty cool car for the price... And still Italian.

@joshrmeyer: Yeah, Testarossa is nice, but I'm not a big fan of that one, rather have a 488 GTS. The 355 covers my needs tho, nice wide body, sexy sounding exhaust note, fast and curvy. And it's exotic, unique. I like being different than everyone else. So naturally I want a car I don't see on the road very often yet still stands out in a crowd without saying anything.

Four years and just about 20 mil short of reaching the PS3's all time figure in double the time. Very impressive, mainly because I didn't think consoles could thrive in an increasingly Smartphone dominated world.

@dante9006: When your leading the pack in a race, you do not reach back and try to pull your competition forward. True it would be good for us gamers, (only for a very few as both consoles have enough players to populate any games now) but it would then give a few less reasons to own that platform.

@livedreamplay: Curious. I have both consoles (bought the ps4 gold slim just this past weekend). How does companies sharing such information affect us as customers, besides letting us know how healthy the industry is a whole? So we can convince ourselves we didn't waste X amount of $'s?

@chris91090: In my case, it shoothens my curiosity. I like to know which console sells more, which games, etc. Not because I want to convince myself of something, simply because I like the transparency and knowing how the market is going in terms of gaming. If they don't want to hand out this info they can obviously refuse to do so, but at least don't expect people to mock you for not making this easy info accessible.
