Now Playing: Metroid Prime 4 Announcement Video - E3 2017

Perhaps the biggest surprise Nintendo had in store for its E3 press conference came sandwiched right in the middle, when it announced Metroid Prime 4 for Nintendo Switch. Tihs will be the first major game in the Prime series in at least 10 years when it's eventually released. The last installment, Metroid Prime 3: Corruption, was released for the Wii in August 2007.

No release date or gameplay was shown during the Nintendo Spotlight presentation. The reveal amounted to simply a title screen and the words: "Metroid Prime 4 - Now in development for Nintendo Switch." Eurogamer learned at a separate E3 event that series developer Retro Studios is not handling development of the game.

Nintendo's conference was short, but it was packed full of announcements. The company confirmed that Rocket League is coming to Switch toward the end of 2017. In addition, it revealed a new Kirby game and a new Yoshi game alongside new Zelda: Breath of the Wild DLC. Finally, it showed off some of the wacky mechanics in Super Mario Odyssey. Its post-conference livestream also revealed that a Metroid 2 remake is coming to 3DS.

To catch up on everything that was announced during the Nintendo Spotlight presentation, you can check out this roundup of all the Nintendo announcements. And keep an eye on our hub for more news, videos, and impressions from E3 2017.

Not in 2018 people. 2019 at the earliest.

In the meantime you will get Toad Treasure Deluxe Switch version.

How to keep the Switch relevant.................................................................show a 'announcement trailer' for a 'Metroid' game with absolutely nothing in it.

Comedy gold right there.

Nintendo announcing Metroid: Samus return is awesome news, it's kind of a remake of the original NES Metroid game. I'm just kind of concerned here after what i've heard WHAT Tanabe said about Metroid 4 for SWITCH.

“Personally I’d like to create a story centering around Sylux and Samus. We’ve done a story based on the Hunters, and this time around we’re doing a story on the Galactic Federation. I would like to cross the two over in the future. And of course see a little more of Samus.”

First of all, Sylux while mysterious, is a lil bit overrated, i would love seeing an origin story for Samus and know a little bit more about the bird-like Aliens the Chozos. I think a story about how Samus came to be is more interesting and creative than go after a random Bounty hunter.

AND ONE MORE THING: The game's name is Metroid, for what?? Is it imply that all the adventures of Samus the bounty hunter will be related to those stupid Metroid all over the galaxy??

This announcement was made with Windows Movie Maker? It looks like shit!

MP4, awesome!

Halo 4 however wasnt made by Bungie.

Following the franchise instead of rebooting it is risky and means that there are huge shoes to fill.

Even so, Nintendo is boss when it comes to straightening design and they can make a better job with MP4 than 343 did with Halo.

PS: ironic how it's in the very same 343 that many of the original Retro members work :D

**** YES! **** YES! lol Love Metroid.

Glad its back. awesome, just awesome.

Makes me want to whip out 1 and 2 for Gamecube and play through them. I need to get 3 back for Wii.

Best announcement of E3

Avatar image for regix416_basic

I wonder if they'll give us something to unlock a Switch version of the Trilogy with 4?

Avatar image for mito-eve

Well, now that we've got Super Mario Odyssey comin' out this year, a main series Pokemon game on the way, and the long-awaited Metroid Prime 4... looks like I'll be buying myself a Switch next year (although, to be fair, I was already planning on getting one eventually). I haven't been impressed with the Switch, but this E3 finally convinced me. Nintendo did good this time.

Avatar image for louixiii

I hope it's as epic as the original.

Avatar image for louixiii

@sellingthings: That was fun too. I'm sure it'll be epic though

Avatar image for nurnberg

Damn! I wanted a sequel to Federation Force. I am disappointed.

Avatar image for louixiii

@nurnberg: Really...like...how can you be disappointed with this announcement?

Avatar image for nurnberg

@louixiii: It was a joke. Maybe it wasn't clear enough.

Avatar image for louixiii

@nurnberg: It wasn't clear at all. No :/ or nothing lol

"learned at a separate E3 event that series developer Retro Studios is not handling development of the game."

Just why?! WHY!?!

I was sooo happy till i read that.

Avatar image for deactivated-5a26ae86370e4

@James_xeno: Most of the people who worked on the prime trilogy don't work at retro any more. Some of them are at 343. If this makes you feel better the person who is overlooking this game is the same guy who looked over the trilogy.

Avatar image for James_xeno

Yeah, it does kind of.. Thanks for the heads up.

Avatar image for Alucard_Prime

Dat theme....brings back memories

Avatar image for nadsat-77

Wow i had lost hope...MPrime is one of my favorite game series ever i just hope Nintendo know what they are doing since Retro Studios (the true artists behind the trilogy) are not at the helm this time around.

Avatar image for deactivated-5a26ae86370e4

@nadsat-77: Most of the original members of retro don't work there anymore.

Avatar image for externalpower43

So. The Switch is finally getting a game.

Avatar image for conbot

@externalpower43: Not so fast, there is still plenty of time for Metroid Prime 4 to be delayed to the next console...

Avatar image for PinchySkree

Glad for a new Metroid but disappointed it's more of the same series and not something new.

Avatar image for zura_janai

that's ecxellent news :)

Avatar image for zero_dawn

Thank goodness Sony and Nintendo saved this E3! Tons of sweet AAA EXCLUSIVES for both PS4 and Switch!!

Avatar image for yukushi

Its all about the games people, with metroid 4 my choice is clear as a ps4 gamer, I will get the switch over xbox.

Avatar image for Jag-T1000

@yukushi: whatever dude, goodluck waiting 2 years for metroid 4 then.

Avatar image for Sgt_Crow

@Jag-T1000: Still better than waiting for 2 years and not getting anything if he bought an Xbox.

Avatar image for bumpyface

Lol facts.

Avatar image for d_

Hard to get excited for something I haven’t even got to see a glimpse of yet.. but at least thats another game to look forward to even though its probably years off.

Still disappointing though.. was expecting more games, but there’s always TGS I guess.

Avatar image for ninboxstation

Im hyped but worry a bit...., since its MP4 and not a new take, it wont have an impact as MP did back then.., but be more like MP2 or 3...

and MP3 was good with epic moments, it was overall not an epic game like MP1&2.., and with games out like dead space, doom, prey etc., MP4 needs to add fereshness too still impress (or it will "fail" like MP3 did..., which was still like mentioned a good game, just more like an addon)

Avatar image for girlusocrazy

But not being made by Retro. Please be NOTHING like Metroid Prime: Federation Force

Avatar image for soulfulDAGGER

@girlusocrazy: Other M was pretty bad too lol

Avatar image for girlusocrazy

@soulfulDAGGER: I liked it apart from the story and wiimote aiming parts, it felt a lot like Super Metroid otherwise and looks very close to this game actually
